I think they meant it this way:

recent charity work with Child's Play has substantially increased the bandwidth usage over at Penny Aracade.

It makes perfect sense, once you add in the 'usage' word into the mix. Penny Arcade is getting many more hits than usual because of their chairty work. So slashdot is being charitable in return. Tis the season to be sharing (bandwidth)!

In three cities today demonstrated followers to the pirate's chest under the banners of "Welfare begins at 100Mbit" and "Abolish copyrights". In stockholm demonstrated nearer to two hundred, people, in Umeå a hundred and in Malmö a brave half dozen.

Participants make complaint sayings like "Use the force - Open Source" and "We will have sex/six, we have sex/six, we will have six hundred Mbit" [NOTE: the word for sex and six is spelled and pronounced the same, so its a play on words], and and carried homemade banners with priates or ???. In Umeå it was awarded to the best dressed pirate a real harddrive.

Both in stockholm and Umeå talks were held to the newly begun campaign, "Stop the Fluktarna" [no clue what that is], as an aim to .... [got lost during this sentance]

"... At the same time, no one says that it's silly to spend $1000+ on a PC to play games, when you can do the same thing with a $199 PlayStation 2."

There is a big difference here. Going from a PDA to a GBA you are getting better control over the gaming experience. You have more input options on the GBA (joypad, buttons, etc) than on the PDA (a stylus).

Going from a Computer to a console system is the complete opposite. You go from a 100+ key keyboard, with a mouse, inputs for joysticks, game pads, wheels, etc - all the way down to a console system that has a few more buttons than a GBA. So the comparison isn't a fair one. I can get a better gaming experience on the computer not simply becuase of a faster processor and vidcard, but also because I can interface it one of a dozen ways that suit my needs. This expierience is highly customizeable.

So if anyone things that because of a faster processor in a pda they are gonig to have a better gaming expience, put down the gba and grab your stylus...

  11. Missing logic on Digging Holes in Google · · Score: 1

Argument 1: "All Shopping, All the Time"

When I search for DVD, the bulk of pages on the web are selling a dvd, so why should I expected a majority of those dropped out in place of "John Doe's personal page of DVD worship?" If I want a review, I search on: dvd review, or dvd consumer reviews, etc.

This falls under 'what we expect'...

    Argument 2: "Skewed Synonyms"

Their apple example was laughable. If I want to search for "Washington State Apple Growers Association" I don't search for "apple" and then "sift through 50 results". This is nearly the exact same complaint as the above, just reworded.

The general thought they are trying to pass off, "If you search for a general term you don't get exactly what you were looking for" is missleading. You get exactly what you were looking for, general stuff.

Only children and very much less experienced people search for terms like "games", or "apple". Anyone who has used the yellow pages will instinctively know how to get around using the google search tool.

    Argument 3: "Book Learning"

Here the article writter(s) argue that google is changing the way research is done, well, so did libraries! They brought all the information into one place. Is this bad? Is this the product of Google's page rank system?!?

They even excuse google for this "Google Hole" by making the discliamer: "You can't really hold Google responsible for these blind spots. Each of them is just a reflection of the way the Web has been organized by the millions who have contributed to its structure."

So the argument that more people search the web, and less go to libraries to read book, thus forcing people to publish books on the web in pdf format really isn't an argumentable point, it's a statment. And???

All in all, I would say this article has about the general quality of an editorial written by highschool newspaper (mine was awful back in the day, appologies to those who have had better experiences). I'm not going to bite on the "they publish this to promote their own new search engine. It's not that level of FUD.

Read it yourself. You will find yourself laughing... it least it is good for that.

Its not just a few bugs either, players complain about the lack of fresh content, slow moving action, the cost (initial and monthly), etc. I am getting the feeling that player are only playing it for 2 reasons: 1) they forked out 50 dollars and so they are going to play their first month through, 2) its Star Wars, period

I liked risk, but it was to much of the same. Castle risk tried to fix this, but IMHO Risk 2210 AD takes the cake.

I don't know how many of you have played this game, its a refreshing approach to risk.

    New Features include:

    -New pieces, mech-like units.
-5 new units (generals) that add attacking and defense bonuses (namely they roll 8-sided)
-No more changing in cards for the 'next big bonus'. Extra units awarded for how many territories you control, plus complete continent bonuses. Very well balanced, the bonus scales, so it remains very fair.
-Territories are chosen round robin style at the beginning of the game, so you wont get shafted with bad luck.
-Sea colonies and moon colonies to expand into, these are vaccant at game start.
-general cards (strategy cards that enchance generals' powers).
-Random territories nuked at the beginning of the game (significantly alters the map every game, new choke points, battle strategies, etc).
-Energy is gained through combat and territories that allows you to hire generals, purchase general cards, and more.
-Turn order is bid for each round, with a 5 round limit (faster games). Energy is used for bidding, so strategies exist around the saving of energy for turn order (imaging going last one round and then first the next!)
-more, more more, and much more!

No, I don't work for Hasbro(current game owner?), but I do really like this game. There are options for playing classic risk too. I have found a few copies at WoTC, but have heard rumors that they are out of print know, don't know. Expect a 30+ price tag, there are a lot of pieces.

Not only are there not many women making games, there just isn't that many playing them. I don't think it is because they don't like them, it because they don't know they like them.

Any time I get my wife (age 22) to sit down and actually *try* a game out, its weeks before I can get my pc/console/pda back from her. I find most girls enjoy gaming, they just don't like the image it portrays and so they avoid playing them altogether.

Trying to target games to that kind of market (the female kind) sounds like trying to get poeple hooked on drugs. They don't want to try them, but as soon as you can get them started, you in. Maybe game makers should start giving out free copy of their games to women!?!
