Don't you think a reason for this is the lack of support for open formats in popular players?

Yes. I just identified one of the problems why it is not supported due to lack of popularity.

This is the typical chicken-and-egg problem. No one will support FLAC until there are devices that can play it. If there's no content in FLAC, player manufacturers won't see the need to include it.

I recall my Creative MP3 playing FLAC with ease. I know iPod can play FLAC after some effort yet the problem is the EFFORT part. FLAC isn't cool, FLAC isn't hip, it's not jazzy man and all the squares keep buying MP3 Players to play Mp3s.

The OP was referring to series that end in 10-15 episodes. All of them which have some very good story arcs and endings.

    *SPOILERS ALERT*

    • Scry'd - Worst enemies unite to protect one and still have a "go-at-it" in the end
    • Chobits - Chobit(Cyborgs or Bots) continue living among the humans (more human than before) and even more accepted by society. There is a character that leaves his wife over a Chobit.
    • Tsukihime(Shingetsutan) - Boy with an amazing ability to destroy objects by tracing lines.
    • Tenchi Muyo (!in Tokyo, !Universe) - This series made fun of the hero always getting the women and ran with it (Protaganist + 3 women + 1 girl + female rabbit/cat). Note: All the women are from outer space.

Did you notice all the shows I listed can be classified as science fiction? Each of these stories very unique to each other and I didn't have to use "Cowboy Bebop" which takes elements from westerns and applies it to futuristic world. (Space is just the next Frontier right?)

Point being, those shows end in either 1 or 2 seasons and are designed to have proper endings.

mp3 would've fallen by the wayside years ago given that it was already inferior almost a decade ago

(adding to the history of the mp3)

MP3s were driven by the darkest of markets due to its reduced size which allow more users to take advantage of downloading albums in the same time it would take to download a three minute WAV file. This was critical to its success since broadband for consumers was either expensive or unavailable.

Actually it's the exact opposite. With new forms of entertainment around every corner, game developers are looking for anything fresh and exciting to offer their customers (at least they are at my company). FPS are a dime a dozen and because of this, they're getting harder and harder to make back budget. Any serious gamer will tell you Doom3, Quake4, and yes, TF2 are terrible games. Of course, we are on Slashdot; so your safe groupthink response is valued much more than individual thought; or of someone who's been gaming since the late 1970s.

Wow a lot of people must love playing TF2 since it is so crappy. Even on the competitive level they love to play it because of its controls, the level design and overall gameplay is mediocre. Our customers are saying "Hey! At the end of a long day the only thing I want to play right now is a terrible game. Let's play Team Fortress 2 and continue to be masochists!"

Yep. Not making back the amount we used in our budget on a game that sells over a million copies. Not at all

Damn, If only we made Crysis 3 with unachievable minnimum requirements we would make A FORTUNE!

Two $30 meals might satisfy you for four hours at most, but a $40-60 video game, might take up anywhere from 30 to 1000 hours of your time

The movies? You spend $10 on that ticket for a three hour film? Those music CDs? You'd have to listen to them an awful lot to get the same hourly value out of a CD than you would get out of a video game.

Yet, the purchase of cinema tickets, going out to eat and a music CD could be the most memorable experience you have for a lifetime.

Video games (and PC games) are still one of the best bangs for your buck in terms of entertainment. People will complain about the price of consoles until they die and come back as zombies but it's a one time purchase and it's more like an investment.

The best bang for your buck when it comes to entertainment will always depend on the consumer. The price of some consoles are too high just like the price consumer grade petroleum. Most people would rather wait until the demand for the product drops thus lowering the price of the product than purchasing the product at the manufacturer's suggested retail price.
