1: Technically you do know when your virus checker was updated.
2: The majority of end users do user microcr@p windows.
so 3: In most end-user cases, you *can* equate computers with Windows.
There are exceptions, but not enough to make a difference as yet.
Were dealing with the real world here unfortunately, and it sucks.
Speaking as a UK consumer, it doesnt surprise me. Most of the people i deal with dont bother with a virus checker until they start having problems, and most viruses these days seem to be designed for creating botnets so try to not to hog resources, crash the computer or use too much bandwidth. If only other windows programs were so well designed:-)
When I first got broadband (About 2 years ago?) , the ISP i use, (Pipex) offered a free virus checker and gave instructions on how to run it. They dont any more. Nor do anyone else.
I personally think that no-one who manages their own computer and *doesnt* know when their virus checker was last updated shouldnt be allowed near the internet.
You're not wrong. Is it just me, or does this de Raadt character get 'snippy' each and every time the world doesn't roll over and play the game how he wants them to?
Yes, but that doesnt mean he's always wrong. Its probably best to judge him on what he's saying *at the moment*. Being argumentative is not nesseserily a bad thing, although he does put his foot in it more than is really a good idea
Trouble is, geeks carry no weight in business, and the businessfolks have all the money. It's up to us to decide if we want some of that money or not.
Thats not really true. I'm a geek and i have quite a lot of say in technical decisions. Our CTO is a geek also. I do not work for a technical company. I work for a publishing company.
If any company hires a technically minded person and then wont listen to his or her advice, they they they are wasting that person.
Would you hire an accountant and then ignore their advice about financial matters? if so, please tell me the company you are involved with so I can avoid accidentally getting hired there.
Any company that ignores the advice of its geeks is wasting a valuable resource. The companies I have worked for realise this.
That doesnt mean they are always right, however moderating conflicting advice is part of being a manager.
I have also seen a very good reason why anyone who has an absolute disbelief in God is also not very smart. Its based on the premise that in Science, you cant disprove something with No evidence.
Its why I always laugh at people who call themselves die hard atheists. They are just as blinkered as the religious fundementalists.
Personally my choice is being Agnostic. I veer on the side of not believeing there is a god, but accept the possibility there is, so try to hedge my bets and not break too many commandments/Muslem religeous laws:-)
The only thing that keeps me going is that some day one of these people is going to put a PC board into something like a Vax or a Sun 1/2, and then all the aincient bearded ones will descend on them and murder them all and use their entrails to grease an old Fujitsu Eagle (Look it up).
Then you could argue there lifes wont have gone to waste.:-)

- The US is trying to force the EU's Moritorium on GM foods declared illegal via the WTO
Sovereignty, anyone? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.:-)
Sorry, the WTO works both ways.
Doesnt matter. All we need to do is get the CIA to fire all its Orbiting brain lasers at the asteroid for a few days.
I've played Freespace, i know Lasers can break up asteroids:-)
Dont worry, i will excuse your simplistic ways. You should consider looking at something other than Fox news from time to time.
The Iraq war has little to do with Terrorism and nothing to do with Al Quida. Indeed Saddam Hussain was held up as an example of a traitor to Islam by bin-laden.
The only confirmed Al Quida terrorist in Iraq has only popped his head up *since* the invasion.
The invasion was sanctioned on the False premise based on intelligence that was known to be dodgy at the tine, mostly backed up by a person who was known to have a grudge, interpreted by people who should have known better. Certainly in the UK, they *did* know better, but Buttkiss Blair decided to ignore them. I cant imagine intelligence operatives in the US not missing as well.
Lets be honest, Saddam was a scumbag. He is a mass murderer and he should have been dealt with by George W's father when he had the chance (In a war completely supported by most of the planet including those "French liberal pinko's", or better still, not put there by the CIA to start with. This, however was not the way to deal with it.
If he'd waited 6 months, he could have got the support from the rest of those insignificant places that exist outside the boundaries of the US, but no, his arrogance and flagging popularity forced him ignore the objections instead of dealing with them like a real statesman would do and he instead threw American and British lives at a campaign that everyone thaught at the time would end in a quagmire.
Of course Blair is not blameless here as well.
George W has done more to harm world stability since the cuban missle crisis.
In this you have a point. They could hardly make more a mess of our foregn policy than TB has done.:-)
Never the less there is a body of opinion that the UK's disconnection from europe is why the economy has managed to avoid most of europes downturn.
I personally believe that the Euro is a good idea, but as most of the country seem to disagree with me and i feel that any Brussels government would try to force it on us, i can see that would be a bone of contention in the future:-)
Besides Brussels is a lot longer to go than London when you need to picket some politicians:-)
Yeah, but the UK doesnt seem to be able to make policy decisions without the US's say so.
The Majority of the UK wanted nothing to do with the Iraq war. That didnt stop Buttkiss Blair doing what his lord and masters in the white house and the oil business told him.
Admittedly this is more to do with our Elected representatives than the US's.
In some ways, i wish we had Thatcher back. Whatever her faults, she didnt take crap from anyone.
Unfortuntely in the UK we have the choice between an untrustworthy tosser, an idiot who is out to grab headlines, and someone who basicaly means well, but feels we should be run from Brussels.
Hmm, perhaps i should consider starting the ScouseMouse dictatorship party. Any takers?
Out of interest are there any countries that havent been an enemy of the US at some stage?
There is also the problem that some very few US forces seem to have trouble with this whole "Ally" business.
"Hey bubba, that guys got an inkerlish sign on his shoulder"
"Wow, we were at war with them a couple of hundred years ago, lets shoot him for great grandpoppy"
"Where is britishland anyway?"
"I heard its near those pinko Frenchlanders.."
(With apologies to any real US armed forces out there, i am well aware most of you are not idiot rednecks, US Politicians however....:-)
Actually miniturisation usually reduces costs. Especially PCB manafacturing costs. As i believe all the Xbox components are Surface mount anyway, it probably wouldnt reduce costs to any significant degree.
They are probably also hampered by the fact that its basically a PC, and has a PC's cooling requirements.
The easy answer is that of no one did steal their code. They seem to have having trouble specifying *any* copying according to IBM, and every time they have put an supposed example of copying out to the general public, it has been rapidly taken to pieces.
Remember this is the company who's research is so sloppy that they tried to claim the BSD packet filtering code was theirs
I for one certainly hope that SCO survive long enough to go to trial. It will prove once and for all that Linux and the GPL is safe in its current form, and will provide a fasceniting insight into how expert Lawyers dispose of sloppilly researched cases.
I suspect its probably because if it is fixed so badly to emit a significant amount of X rays (IE, the components are stressed far over their normal tolerances), they would probably not survive long enough to give you a decent dose of X rays.
I suspect anyone who deals with 10,000 volts on a regular basis exercises extreme caution. There is sort of a darwin thing encouriging it.
Saying that, i have heard a number of stories about people being thrown across the room by HT from TV's, but never actually killed by it.
I am informed that this is probably due to the fact that these circuits cant supply enough current to be lethal, but the voltage causes your muscles to contract violently, throwing you across the room.
That sort of thing only applies in trademark law. As far as patents (Software or otherwise) apply, they can be as damn selective as they feel like so the conversation would be more like:
"you're infringing our patent, would you mind paying us $x",
then if the company a can point to the Open Source infringer and say
"well, they're not paying anything so is your license really worth anything?".
the response would be along the lines of
So?
Most large patent holders dont want to rock the boat too much in case they give the anti-sw-patent lobby too much ammunition. Software patents are a goldmine for large companies. If patent battles start descending into lots of legal wars, Congress will have to take action, even if the Senetor's Corparate owners dont want it.
Besides, Microsoft have already managed to dodge anti-trust issues in the US, I suspect they will wait a few years before they judge it safe to try to kill a competitor in such an obvious manner again.
