In a test conducted by CNET News.com, a DVD treated with TDK's coating survived a determined attack with a screwdriver and a Sharpie permanent marker with no effect on playability

    Why is Blu-Ray superior ?
    1. More capacity, up to 200Gb according to Sony
    2. TDK has developed a scratch-free surface for Blu-ray DVD's. I would say that's a killer, no more hard to read DVD's when you come home from Blockbuster.

SETI is not flawed, it's designed primarily to intercept signals sent on purpose towards us. Even if ET has long ago stopped leaking radio signals to space, they could easily beam us some messages.

For the past few hundred million years, advanced ET could see that life is present on our planet. This is because of the amount of oxygen and water vapor in the atmosphere. With a large enough telescope ET could even observe continents on Earth.

So it's not far-fetched to think that ET would call us.

You're thinking with today's technology in mind. The technology of tomorrow will be used in the flying cars.

The cars will be automatic, you sit down inside the car and either tell the car where to go or use a touch-screen or keyboard.

The computer system of the car will have full control over the state of the car, fuel level, lights working, tires OK, etc.

There will be an anti-collision system which can detect wires and trees, and avoid them.

So you could actually sleep in the car while flying, I think a fully automated car is needed or else there would be chaos.

  9. Hoax story on Are We Alone in the Universe? · · Score: 1

The fact is about 100 extrasolar planets have been found, and most of these star systems are not like our solar system. This is likely due to observational bias: Only planets with masses much greater than earth can be detected currently.

As far as I know, most astronomers believe that planets with earth like masses are common in our Galaxy's thin disc, and also in the Bulge.

Today I read an article printed in Scientific American in 2001, about the Galactic habitable Zone. Here, astronomers estimate where in our Galaxy complex life could arise. The conklusion is complex life could exist in an annulus in the thin disc, but it's probably very rare.

These are exciting times, for the first time in human history we have the technological capability to determine if we are alone in our Galaxy. Seth Shostak, senior member of SETI believes contact could be made within 20 years.

If no signal is detected, we are probably alone. Anyhow, we have to keep on looking, detecting another civilization would be the biggest discovery in human history.

Is it not allowed to make money off p2p ? They have a business plan, in about 10 days they will release a new version where you can call from Skype to a regular phone at competitive prizes. You need to buy a headset from one of their partners. Why so many critical posts, there is not any spyware in Skype, at least not yet. I think it's great that there is a native Linux version, and not all programs for Linux have to be GPL. We need popular programs for the Linux desktop, and this is one of them. The programmers have said that one version of Skype will remain free for ever, but some more advanced features will cost money.
