A friend of a friend was complaining about the union he works for (he's a concrete truck driver), and after arguing with him for quite a while, it finally came out that it pissed him off that pay increases came on a schedule, rather than by merit.

At that point, I reminded him that he's the greatest benefactor of that. Without the unions, his high level of absenteeism and his productivity on the job would guarantee that his wages remained sorely behind those of his colleagues.

Here's an example: he told me that they have random drug tests, and that while he was clean and knew he'd always pass, he always took the opportunity to get paid for doing nothing. He'd tell them that he didn't have to go, and at that point, they put him in a waiting room with a pot of coffee and magazines to wait. He couldn't leave, because they had to be sure he wasn't getting someone else's pee. He politely refused the coffee and sat there for as much as eight hours--collecting overtime in some cases--and holding his bladder for as long as he possibly could, just to be an ass.

My wife refused a job where they were heavily pursuing her, but absolutely required a non-compete. Since we had recently moved to Oregon, and weren't sure about the precedent regarding enforcibility of such contracts as compared with the precedent in California, where we had been, she staunchly refused.

Best line she came up with when talking with their lawyers (she used to be one, so she's not at all intimidated by their bluster) was: "Last I checked, slavery was illegal in the united states. I will not sign this agreement."

Don't worry, you don't sound like a callous asshole, just a very responsible person who maybe doesn't understand how some people could fall for the hard sell on the house of their dreams

A lot of the people who are in trouble got five year fixed mortgages with low- or no down payment. After five years, the interest rate becomes adjustable, based on prevailing rates.

So five years ago, the people selling the loans were saying two things:
    • This house'll go way up in value and you can get a great fixed mortgage before your five years are up. You just have to wait until your value goes up 25%, then you own 80% of the house, even with an interest-only loan, then you can refi!
    • Don't worry, interest rates are going to be this low FOREVER!

So what happened is that someone was paying off interest only--say $2000 per month--and if their rate remained the same, interest plus capital would have been, say, $2500 (I'm sure that's not accurate, but for instance...). Instead, the interest shoots up three points, which means, on a $400,000 loan, an additional $1200 per month, for a total of $3700 instead of $2500.

Additionally, their home value maybe went down instead of up, so no mortgage company will refinance them with a fixed rate, so they don't know they're going to be stuck for another increase in six months.

And the rest, they say, is history.
