    iPod touch has no 3G hardware and a Nook Color cannot be compared to modern smartphones in terms of hardware performance. But I will give you that the iPod Touch is incredibly inexpensive.

    Your Archos 43 also doesn't have 3G hardware.

    And how many times faster is an iPad 2 or Xoom tablet? How about screen quality? How do you even quantify that, not only the color reproduction and brightness, but also resistive vs capacitive screen. You are not even remotely comparing apples to apples (no pun intended). The Xoom and iPad[2] blow the Archos tablet out of the water in terms of the quality of components.

    I can get an iPod touch for $229, that's a far better comparison to an Archos 43.

    Do you understand how much slower a Nook color is than an iPad 2? You can also get an off-contract iphone 3G for about $99 on craigslist. I don't know exactly what that proves?

    So how many years does it take before these convertible laptops take off? That analogy is very poor. We've had mass produced convertible tablets for many many years versus a very small sample of incredibly primitive early laptops that were extremely bulky. Are you saying that convertible laptops need to be lighter or thinner before they're viable?

    I think it's just a problem with the translation. I think "homemade" in this sense refers to being made in their "homeland". Not at some individual's home.

    Why do people still think tablets were designed to entirely replace laptops? It's like saying trucks will replace sedans. Different tools for different people for different tasks.

    Not to mention a $500 motorola xoom will mop the floor with a $200 Intel Atom based netbook. Google Chrome opens in a tiny fraction of a second on a Motorola Xoom and it takes several seconds to load on a $200 netbook.

    If off contract smartphones are $500-$600 then why do you assume that a tablet (be it an iPad, Xoom, Galaxy Tab, LG View, etc) with a larger screen should cost $300?

    When you build out a dell to include a one piece aluminum body CNC machined from a single block then we can compare apples to apples. Until then it's pretty disingenuous to say it's an equal comparison between the two, wouldn't you agree?

    Not to mention I'd gladly pay the premium just to be able to use Mac OSX over Windows 7. I'm a recent convert (linux/win7 at home and work with a 13" macbook air) and I cannot believe how fast the core2duo macbook air is, it's unreal.

    Apple Macbook crashing makes front page on slashdot. Every other wintel laptop crashing doesn't even get a passing mention at the water cooler.

    Boy, do I feel like an idiot for owning a Mac (core2duo macbook air).

    Second XBMC, it's really amazing. I'm running it on fedora and streaming from a fileserver (~10TB) of music, TV and movies. It automatically catalogs everything for you, including pulling in info from IMDB. There are also some really amazing iPad and Android apps (that work over wifi that) you can use to control XBMC! Overall it's incredibly slick and very well polished, and really easy to setup.

    Maybe I'm missing something, but how would access to the public Internet affect "military operations" (per the article)? Should I be scared that our military relies in anyway on the Internet to function? I understand maybe they backhaul Internet traffic across a private network, but if that's the case, why not just prioritize the important traffic? Then people can use the leftover bandwidth to do whatever they please.

    I just think of all the productive time I waste driving. If the average commute is half an hour and 200 million people commute a day, we just gained 100 million collective hours per day of human productivity. Or maybe just being able to relax and watch some TV for 20 minutes on the ride home instead of fighting in traffic. Sounds awesome to me. I'd love to be able to catch up on my reading on the drive to and from work.

    The ironic part is we don't need a miniature Watson, we just need Watson to be Internet accessible and have really good 4G coverage all over the country.

    Except that like 90% of that driving occurs between 7am-9am and 5pm-7pm and not in an even distribution over the course of the day.

    like a desktop? are you kidding me? i've got an ipad sitting right in front of me I've been using for the last 3 months. first of all, it's great, I love it, but if you would describe the original ipad as "fast" i'd hate to know what device you were using before it. the browser is nothing short of painfully slow when you're running anything that has even moderate javascript in it. scrolling is great but page loading and rendering (over 802.11n wifi) is slow on anything even moderately complex.

    the apple case is designed so it can be used a few different ways, including sitting on your desk like this (top right). you can also sit it in your lap and hold it like you would a book, looking down at an angle.
