It's "Ask Slashdot"! I can see getting frustrated when a simple goggle search can yield the answer, but that doesn't mean all questions are a waste of our time.

If you don't like Ask Slashdot, then just don't look at the section. I don't care about games, BSD, or left-wing politics, so I don't read those sections.

On the other hand, SMB on the windows xp and windows 98SE only works some of the time. I can always count on mine working though.

  16. Standards will just slow the war down on Does Open Source Need Quality Standards? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I tend to think of OSS as a war between different developers to see who's idea will be favored by the market. For too many years, implementation of ideas was up to some PHB. The problems of that system are starting to show. The idea that "well, it may not be the best way to do it, but at least we can all agree to do it this way" goes against the idea that the best solution will come out on top.

I think developers should continue to try new ideas and do it their way. If nobody likes their idea, their software won't be used and it won't matter.

The market will adjust. It may not be elegant or convenient to juggle several different packaging systems, for example, but people are doing it. Eventually, the best packaging system will come out on top because people chose to use it, not become some standards organization decided it was best.

These past few years of OSS have shown some pretty neat ideas in a short amount of time. I think it's going to improve at a faster rate in the next few years.

I read light window manager zealots bitch all they want about how bloated they are, but at least they look good (yeah, soon XFCE will be too much to be considered "light").

Another thing I don't get is transparency. It confuses the eye about what it's looking at and I don't like it at all. But I guess that's another story.

This isn't changing the paradigm in the sense that you still have to go to a fueling station. That's the whole point. Hydrogen would come from large plants that use nuclear power to generate it. A mom and pop shop can't control the supply of hydrogen.

I see just two differences in a hydrogen economy. The first is we don't rely on foreign supplies for a medium to store energy, and the second is that we're polluting the atmosphere less.

People still rely on large companies to extract it and move the stuff around just like we do now.

A pot of boiling water on your stove will probably not reach a higher temperature. This is because of the surrounding air pressure. If they put this in a closed system like a "pressure cooker", it could get hotter.
