I'd love to see this happen, but I can't imagine it anytime soon. I have a teenage sister, and just talking to her you realize how pop culture sells her music so well that I don't see teenagers caring about the format if the distributors keep it relatively simple. When just about every outlet for new music is owned and co-opted by large companies you'll get the same quality of music (shitty) and kids will listen to what other kids listen to even if it's a little more difficult. This isn't new. Do you really think much of the stuff in the 80's or 90's that was pop music is significantly better than today's pop music?

If something isn't done to break apart the distribution systems for music, ie radio, mtv then you will see this situation continue. Good music isn't popular because it's good, it becomes popular only when it's marked or targeted so enough people hear it.

So you believe that most of the problem would be gone if the studio system back then had continued? Actors working for one studio and tied to them by contract is an awfully unfair way of having people do business. Would you like it if you had a long term contract with an employer where they paid you a fraction of your true market value? People are not paid based on the quality of their work. They are paid based on how badly they are needed to do that job. I'll always agree with the person who actually does the work rather than the suits who unfairly determine how much someone should be paid.

Several legal copyright scholars have weighed in on this and according the Google response, the usage here is fully supported by the exceptions in copyright law such as for review or parody. Whether or not they win, I applaud Google for pushing the limits of copyright law so that it covers recently expanded technical developments. This will get plenty of press and at least a few people will question why this isn't possible and why information is effectively hidden forever under the current system.

I'd say that's kind of unlikely when this country can't even handle a relatively simple presidential election without massive problems and allegations of fraud. If you have the partisan groups operate their own tests i'm sure you'd be happy as 100% would get a sufficient score to count their vote.

Also, the people most likely to stay behind are the ones living paycheck to paycheck. They are also the most likely to be living in the poorer, lower lying parts of the city. If they can't afford to get out of town, do you really expect them to have the luxury of storing weeks of food and water? It's disgusting what a few people are doing, but blaming everyone there for not getting out is unfair.

There could have been a faster response, but it's incredibly difficult to put together search and rescue missions in such large areas. Katrina did incredible damage to 90,000 miles which is almost 8x the size of Maryland or Belgium. Also, how are you supposed to make inroads with so many places flooded. I'm not saying that it's right to be slow to bring aid, but the problem is a difficult one to address. You can't simply say poof and have 500 buses there to cart people out of the areas.

  12. Re:Bitorrent User Group on King Kong vs. Movie Pirates · · Score: 1

Hustle and Flow recently was purchased by Miramax for 9 million. It seems there is this slow and subtle outsourcing of Hollywood where the studios just go and purchase from indies the types of films that they simply can't or won't produce. At 5-10 million this is probably a smart idea, but what happens when they start to cost 20-30m per film and you have to also advertise it. Also, it only seems like there are a handful of these films each year so the studios really need to be careful about still being able to create the more independant style of film as they have been so successful lately.

  13. Re:Bitorrent User Group on King Kong vs. Movie Pirates · · Score: 1

Do you really believe that if they can't make a profit on King Kong that next time they will take a gamble on a 75 million dollar indie style film that no one has heard of? There's a reason you see so many sequels and remakes and that's because they're profitable. I figure they'll probably just spend less making sequels and King Kong flicks using cheaper actors or locales. Making King Kong relies on the huge and free word of mouth that will compare the old one to the new one which is incredibly valuable. This won't keep them from making these films, it just may restrain the total number of films made. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see more movies like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but few film companies are willing to take that risk when they know another spiderman sequel will bring in almost guaranteed money.

I wasn't attacking the band, but I was posing an indictment of the state of music in the media today. There's something to be said for the music itself. Canned and treated as a product is why the vast majority of the stuff you find out there today is crap. On another note, it takes tons of money to market in the US if you didn't start off with a presence here so that may be part of the lack of attention. After all, there was a time when some people thought the Beatles would never catch on in the US.

I figured out a long time ago that these types of jobs require learning many new things, so you might as well enjoy the process, right?

I also work for a large financial company and we've had the same issues with cancelling offshoring. As for the H1B's, I mostly feel sorry for them here because they are treated as outsiders by the people threatened by them. It's definitely more a fear of being replaced than overt racism although that doesn't condone treating them that way. The parent poster who was saying that H1B's are a lower quality of worker should try working in an environment where everyone there before you arrived is rooting for you to fail so they can feel better about their job.
