What I think would be interesting to know is how many of the zealous open source advocates here actually contribute to and take advantage of open source (using the program source, not just the program itself.)
You are obviously confusing his statement. He said Linux does not need OPEN SOURCE to be used. Linux could be closed source, but still free, and people would still use it. Most of the people who use linux don't even look at the linux source code.
If Linux wasn't open source it wouldn't have been able to progress as quickly as it has, but that was not the point he was making.
[Irony alert!] Yes, MSNBC says all the servers they cracked were running MS SQL. [/irony alert]
That is not ironic! They are a news site who are suppost to report the news as it is, just like any other news site. I'm so fucking tired of people shitting on MSNBC just because they are co sponsored by Microsoft.
Irony would have been if Microsoft had reported this on their web site.
I'm no fucking Buddhist, but this is enlightenment. - Bjork
That's completely irrelevant. Are they suppost to just not report on the news because it is in some way connected to their company? Did CNN not report that Ted Turner and Jane Fonda were having marital problems (not that any one really gives a shit)?
What if the theme had been created for older versions of MacOS? Would they still be complaining? I think this is all just rediculous because this 'theme' for windows will not in any way stop some body from purchasing a Macintosh / MacOSX.
Does anyone have the theme in question? I think we should start posting it all over free websites like geocities. I'm sick of big corporations wasting the time of our legal system to satisfy their overinflated egos.
There're blood stains all over my old AST case. ~:L I ordered one of the translucent cases and built my own computer a few weeks ago and I haven't cut myself yet:)
I actually read the full "The person I almost was" strip at e-sheep.com and I think it was definately worth reading. I can't really describe it or categorize it because I'm really not too good at things like that. But it leaves you in a kind of thoughtful / depressed state. Definately not comparable to User Friendly though because one is direct humor while the other is not.
Regardless, I was planning to throw a retort at whatshisface who was repetitively posting about how repetitive he thinks user friendly is, but now I'm just not in the mood. And it's his damn fault!:|
Hah, I remember the exact oppositte happenned to me. 5 years ago when BBS's were popular I would call one (locally) and my parents freaked out and thought that it was going to cost a bunch of money because I called it with the computer.
An interesting solution I thought of, would be to allow all the candidates to be rated on a number scale, or put the candidates in the order of who you would want as president. That might give third parties a better chance. Not only that, say your first choice didnt win, your second choice would have a better chance because you put him as your second choice.
Yeah, it's kind of a problem with the whole political party system. If you vote for the third party, you could end up causing your first and second choice pick to lose because everyone with political views similar to yours were split between the two candidates, allowing a minority candidate (minority being less than 50%) to win. This is pretty much what happenned in 1992. From my guess, a lot of Perot supporters were generally Conservatives.
However that's all off topic. I agree with the above poster who said he doesnt think we should be looking at the "geek ticket". For one, I don't think any of the candidates could effectively represent the geek community. Many of the so called geek-community's issues don't even get recognized in debates. When is the last time you saw a presidential debate over patent laws? Yeah, I don't remember either.
Honestly, I don't know who I will vote for. I might go ahead and waste my vote on a third party if I like him enough. I'll probably get disowned by my parents for not voting republican though.;)
JLG for president! That would make my nipples hard. =)
I don't know about digital copying, but you could easily just use a video out on the graphics card either to another computer and make another digital copy or to a VCR and make a copy onto a tape.
Personally I think the CNN poll kind of missed the point. I don't think anyone is questioning whether or not if people who repost things to their website that is supposedly illegal are responsible for their post. The question should be either "Do you think websites should be reliable for the content on sites that they link to?" or "Do you think that the DeCSS authors were wrong to use reverse engineering to discover the key to CSS?" or "Was DeCSS designed with the intent to pirate DVD?" all of which I would answer no to.:-)
On another note, MSNBC features an article about this thing, and they too sort of missed the point / put a bad spin on it. Title of the article is like "DVD manufaturers go to court over software that allows the copying of DVD's". And then they showed at the top a picture of a Toshiba DVD player which has nothing to do with the article. *sigh*
Last Christmas my parents ordered AppleWorks 5 (Windows version) from Apple over the phone and I don't think they could have screwed it up any more than they did. First they sent a Macintosh version (I didn't open it, but I later discovered that the Windows version is on the same CD). We called and complained to Apple's customer support, who claimed there WAS NO windows version (duh...). Then about a week later (after Christmas), we received two packages in the mail the same day. One was another shrinkwrapped Macintosh version, and the other was an unboxed CDROM and the Appleworks Windows instruction booklet. I ended up selling one of the Mac versions on e-bay for 40$, and I still have the other one.
As for this Christmas season, everything went perfectly. I ordered most of my computer parts from egghead.com around December 10, (and one part from gogocity.com), all of which arrived by December 17 (and the all the shipping from egghead was free !!). Also I ordered a computer case from www.colorcase.com and it arrived in exactly 7 days.
I also ordered two cd's from CDNOW.com at the beginning of December and they arrived within a week.
And finally, I ordered some Kona coffee and some food seasonings from crackseeds plus hawaii (http://www.bvkmall.com/) and it all arrived promptly as well. I recommend them to anyone who wants to order food, candy, or music from Hawaii. (Try the Li Hing products!!)
So basically I did almostall my christmas shopping online and was satisfied with every merchant a purchased from.
Out of the 600$ I have spent so far in online purchases, the only one that went wrong was a 15$ Bjork import CD from Amazon.com a few months ago. It was undeliverable because they couldn't acquire the import from Sweden. Doh! If that is part of the 25% that go bad then it's a bit understandable I guess.
2 minutes to boot? Not sure where you got that information, but as with National Semiconductor's web pad, Be only had about a week or two to get BeOS running on it for Comdex, but Be says that for actual market products it will have instant on.
I don't know how fast the MediaGX processor is, but on my p166 BeOS only takes about 15 seconds to boot, max.
I don't think the BeOS is too bloated at all. Be at one point had beos kernal and API all on a single floppy. Although QNX has done this as well, BeOS is a more affordable solution because it is not relying completely on the appliance market, but it is also focused as a Desktop operating system (and also has a larger user and developer base).
After scientists become good and skilled at creating life, they should breed Pokemon! Then they can release them into all the grassy areas of the world and then we can all go get Pokeballs and try to capture them !! I want a real life Pikachuu !:D
Welcome to Slashdot Paranoia 101. It's a setup for a sci fi movie, but I doubt it's going have any relevance for a very long time. And I think you would need a team of mad scientists.

All the cases at colorcase.com take a standard floppy, you just have to take the front off the floppy drive.

I think ascii porn will need to be included for the lynx audience. =P

Don't be silly, Pintos have been spontaneously exploding long before anyone knew what the Y2k bug was. :p
Maybe people have finally realised that many of these internet stocks are just over priced ! Then again.... yeah, probably not. *sigh*

I'm sure the techies at Nasa can figure out how to make sex possible without having a baby come out of it, don't you? ;)
We may not be better than the bugs in star ship troopers, but they're the ones who were throwing big meteors at us. :(
Oh my, I almost posted the same thing. "Damn! I knew those dirty Europeans were nothing but a bunch of aliens !"
