So you'd prefer large corporations not pay tax anymore? I hate to burst your bubble, but a large corp could have no political motivation but still get help because they put millions/billions into the gov't coffers from taxes/fees. I know I would speak on someone's behalf if it meant I'd get more money, even if they didn't ask me to.

I'm also willing to bet the continental congress had a large contingent of business owners present wanting to make sure their own interests were taken care of. How many of them were your average Joe from off the street?

Mario Kart is another favorite. The simplicity of these games and the way they are designed to maximize fun as a group are great. It's a console to enjoy with your friends.

I do far less console gaming now and I'm undecided on buying a next generation console, but I don't want to buy a console that only plays shortened versions of games that are available on my PC. I like the uniqueness of the Nintendo games.

I am in no way defending the bill, because the wording does open up the possiblity for abuse, but it does not give law enforcement "free reign" for questioning people.

I believe the actual terminology is "reasonable suspicion" that there is a crime being committed or about to be committed (no different from current laws). The bad wording comes in when being a witness to a crime allows them to take your info.

In airports, for example, if you refuse to provide your information you are not arrested, you are just denied entry.

None of that relates to rentals though.

Sometimes a patent is needed to allow newcomers into the business world. If what Netflix did was such a common idea, why did no other movie/game rental company do it before? Why should Blockbuster be able to easily steal the idea and potentially undercut Netflix due to the income Blockbuster already had been making? The fact is Netflix was innovative with their business model, and they deserve to have some protection (IMO) for a short time frame.

If some small software company borrowed an idea from another service, made it unique to software and got a patent then Microsoft swept in and stole the idea and implemented it, /.'ers would be crying foul against M$ and glad the small company was defending themselves against the evil empire.

#1 I do not remember any other company offerning rental by mail DVDs (and no late fees on returns)
#2 I believe Netflix was the first company to offer the monthly fee/get as many DVDs as you can watch in a month business model.

To me, these are innovative business strategies. I'm not going to argue the validity of the patent, but to say there is nothing new with what they've done is absurd.
