  1. Re:but on Battery-powered Cigarettes? · · Score: 1

The thing is, smokers are asking for more rights than non-smokers. Non-smokers only need to breathe the air directly around them, and as long as it is clean (enough) it should be ok. Smokers on the other hand require, whether they like it or not, a much larger volume of air for their smoking habit, since the smoke spreads around. Thus if we want, say, a 50/50 split of airspace in a room, the smokers have to squeeze into the corners in order to avoid invading the airspace beyond their limits. Or someone has to pay for hefty airconditioning. And as far as I know, there are more non-smokers than there are smokers.

Let me provide all you people with a real-world legislation example:

In Finland, a law was passed a number of years ago that prohibits smoking in public places, and limits smoking in bars. Bars must have a non-smoking area, and no smoking is allowed by the counter whatsoever. This naturally caused an outrage when it was proposed. These days, it's just natural. The air in (most) drinking establishments is cleaner and nicer, and I haven't heard anyone complain. So there.

  2. Re:but on Battery-powered Cigarettes? · · Score: 1

Well, here's the second subject of this Highly Scientific Study (tm). I smoke rarely, and only when drunk. If I am unable to stop smoking when drunk (which is a possibility) then I can simply stop drinking, which is no problem for me. As it is, I smoke about once every 3 months or so. When not smoking, I dislike being in second-hand smoke. It chokes me up sometimes (not seriously though), since my senses are not dulled by alcohol. Thus I don't think I belong to the group that are labeled "addicts". If I ever try something stronger, I'll let you know whether I get hooked or not.

Logically it would be better for communication if everybody learned the same lingo. But unfortunately it might be hard to keep everybody on course, there's enough variation within just one language already. Also unfortunately, you would have to learn about all other cultures, and the words and expressions they need, or all cultures have to be the same. Moreover, unfortunately, there's just too many frickin' people these days, so that I don't think you can find some nice middle ground anywhere.

Please note that childish != low quality/simple/inadequate-for-older-than-10yo. Childish also does not necessarily mean 'targeted specifically at small kids'. The reason people get riled up when someone calls Nintendo childish is that that person always seem to want to imply that it's a bad thing, and that being "mature" and "ass-kicking" is a preferable state of personality.

    Sounds intriguing to me..

I started many years ago with Slackware and a 1.3 kernel. The machine was a dual-booting 486, and when it got upgraded, the Slackware part kinda fell off. Sometime later, I try RedHat, version 5.0.. 5.2 .. 7.x ... Now I've used Fedora too, and read about the compilings of Gentoooooo and the Insert-CDs of Knoppix x x x x (that's the sound of a cd-rom drive seeking :). And after all these years, I'm still a humble windows user, not using linux in any full-time way (except on my zaurus, but that doesn't count). All of those seem confusing, contrived, well-meaning but somehow lacking in sensible clarity. Slackware was fun to start with back in the days, these new things just look huge. So what should I do, should I return to my mother's womb? (by which I mean slackware, of corse) Or will I just be fooling myself?

Japanese phones use prediction at the grammar level (at least). You begin typing a word and it then suggests a likely candidate. After this, you have a small menu of likely "next words" or grammar particles, depending on phrases, what you have written in mails/messages before and what kind of word you just wrote. I've written entire mails just by typing one character, and selecting the rest from menu after menu.
Of course, that's still not a very long mail, but I don't see why it should be difficult to expand it. A general solution might be difficult, but why does it have to be so broad? Prediction for a specific language is what is desired anyway.

Btw, has anyone tried coupling text prediction with speech recognition?
