The conspiracy theories are plainly pants.

Still, Slate has an excellent reputation and the money involved is just a rounding error in Microsoft's accounts. So why sell it?

I'll concede that free speech is taken further in America than just about anywhere else (although there have been periods when that wasn't the case), but you're making a hell of a generalisation.

When it comes to gambling, drinking, abortion and emergency contraception, Germans are undeniably more free than Americans.

Also, it's arguable whether stronger competition law increases or reduces freedom; this point isn't the slam-dunk you seem to think it is.

  16. Re:Dammit! on Microsoft's EU Appeal is Ready · · Score: 1

Actually for civil trials in most jurisdictions you can generally only appeal on matters of law, not matters of fact.

However this isn't an appeal from a court; it's an appeal of a quasi-judicial decision taken by the EC competition authorities. So the grounds for appeal are very wide.

The analogy with the Earth's gravitational field is exact. There is no "energy" stored in the Earth, yet it will do work on objects that are "pulled" towards it. Similarly, the fact magnets will do work on objects that are attracted towards them does not mean that magnets are a store of energy.
