This isn't a magic wand your boss waves over your box. If s/he has access to your box s/he has access to your box - regardless of how perfect the copy of your stuff will be.
I was at the ceremony where Canada officially accepted Estonia's first ambassador to our country. I've been rooting for them ever since (just not in Hockey).
This is my configuration. Gentoo server with 600GB of storage connected to my 802.11G home router and a $25.00 DLink GbE card was added so I can connect my PowerBook to it.
Server (with all it's fans and all) is in the basement, PowerBook stays on the main floor. I can connect everywhere in the house with my WiFI and I can get GbE speeds wherever the 25ft Cat6 cable can go. Firewire is generally good for 6ft.
To connect I don't use samba. Instead I use version 2 (not 1 - very important!) of Netatalk http://netatalk.sourceforge.net/ and NFS for my all media drive. Netatalk 2 has a lot of features and overhead, NFS has few features but a lot of speed.
One small note: OSX will see the 1GbE connection as a better route than your WiFi - so I'll have to turn on IP masquerading.
Linux will continue to grow in cell phones, Tivos and server rooms, but not on the desktop. The only way it can put a real dent in Windows' share of the market is if it betters it in easy of use (not that impossible) and if it gets a killer app.
What might the killer app be? Maybe a USB device that turns your PC into a PVR but costs ~$10.00 (ie, a ~$10.00 TV Card with a full linux distro). Or some kind 100% free skype to phone suite with video.
All very inlikely, but so is Windows defeat. I don't even think a few more summers of slammer virues would end Windows use.
That said, I don't think M$ will have a good time trying to get Windows out of the office and into your livingroom or pocket.
My $0.02 I've setup a few small office boxes with RAID1 - the average CPU today has power to spare serving RAID1 over 100MB connection - most can do a 1G connection too. Save hardware RAID for big time servers or the gamers.
But, I'm curently collecting parts for a HTPC and I was going to go with my most familiar distro unless I can find a SlackedMyTH or a GenTV or a FOXCore or a KnnopPictureInPicture or HDebian TV, etc...
Anyone know if there's a distro the just reuquires 'emerge mythtv' or 'yum install mythtv' or 'apt-get install mythtv'? Is the answer, all of them (other commenst suggest not)?
There are lots of reasons - but if you can't find alternatives
for things like ISA Server, SQL Server, Commerce Server, Content Management Server, Systems Management Server" that will run on a *NIX you're reading the wrong web site.
..the point is that no company is going to port their applications to a platform who's stated goal and track record is to reverse engineer everything they find useful.
That's a good point and a good concern. But the other big OS makers (Microsoft and Apple) do it all the time - it's just their final version isn't free.
I had the same experience. I have the Google Preview extension installed. Could that affect things? Has anyone seen this in their search results source?
Ports are yet another great thing to come out of BSD and into the Linux 'mainstream'. Plus who didn't get curise about Linux becuase of the tewaking aspect? (Answer: People buying PCs to install pirated copies of Windows on)
This used to be the place to get Fifth and Top Gear Torrents: http://www.finalgear.com/ His ISP got a nasty eMail a few weeks ago. Are these events linked?
I've got the Bluetake BT500 bluetooth mouse for my PowerBook. I highly recommend it for any portable device that connects to bluetooth. Small, good range, two buttons and a scroll wheel.
That is, it's small, but useable. It easily fits in your breast pocket (so long as you don't already have a pocket protector.... or breasts).
Tomorrow's headline is: Richard Stallman angry about Mr. Dell's.........

Go Estonians!

I've only seen it on Red Hat boxes (and had not interest in forcing on myself in other boxes). Was it a Red Hat patch until this release?
I just installed BSD on my PDA!
This is the year of linux on the desktop!
Yeah right!

And then there's Apple.........?
Thanks for the great post.
I would add to software RAID:
Pro - More inspectable than a cheap RAID card
My $0.02
I've setup a few small office boxes with RAID1 - the average CPU today has power to spare serving RAID1 over 100MB connection - most can do a 1G connection too. Save hardware RAID for big time servers or the gamers.
They did give a shirt when Caltech was on campus
I know, old debate.

First they intrude into one individual's health care, now they want to bend time itself!
Is there nothing Congress doesn't assume it has control over?

That's what I was looking for. Good show!

You can't zoom in to most areas of the Nevada Desort. A search for Groom Lake, Nevada turns up only two results.
A lot of my neighbors have pools.

Cogent points.
But dude, try Gentoo.

Otherwise, a fair assesment.
I read this last week!
2 4/ 1638226&tid=3
http://apple.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/03/
It's true, Slashdot has turned into another Apple rumour site.
Gentoo wouldn't go from roumor to story in 10 min. It'd take a really long time to sync and compile two whole distros!

Does iCal have an API?
I noticed that too. Wasn't the situation that Bart and Lisa were reading Homer's map to the RV store and the directions said "Remember to Ask Jeeves".
Anyone want to correct me? I didn't know there'd be a test when I watched it.
To be fair, the episode also had Marge accussing Homer of doing nothing at work but Googling his own name.
Check it out: http://www.google.com/googleblog/2005/03/google-go es-x.html
I found the site earlier yesterday, but when I read the Google Blog last night the link was dead.
