If he -had- posted it in the article, 70% of the comments would berate him for slashvertisement. So it's a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't.
So here's the thing: He didn't even say WHAT the app did, never mind a link to the project.
Had he at least done that, he would have either been told that's it's a great idea (or not) or been told that a similar project already exists and should probably be putting his energy toward the other, already established project.
My guess is he was afraid that there was already another similar project and didn't want to be compared to it - fairly or unfairly.
I'll have to go back to a default Ubuntu install I did on another disk, but I can tell you that Easy Peasy (based on Ubuntu NBR) does this and replaces it with... wait for it... Picasa.
That was the first thing to get removed and replaced with Gimp. Gimp really is much lighter on resources than Picasa.
(b) Hulu and everyone else starts to put more advertisements on their shows (more likely, but would also pro
For those of us with no cable and using only digital OTA, Hulu (and other online sites) replace a DVR. And I think we'd be willing to sit through commercials.
Except that all this can be freely had with many of the media players out there.
I don't know if iTunes player does this (don't use, but I suspect it does), but both Rhythmbox and Amarok can get all this information automatically through plugins.
I had one and liked it generally, aside from the miserable battery life.
But it's really stupid to even consider comparing something you wear and something you use to actually get work done. I realize these suits want us to believe that netbooks are only capable of media consumption, but they're capable of and used for much more.
...I would do three things: gradually modify MySQL to make it easier to transition from MySQL to Oracle, market MySQL heavily as a lightweight, easy databse for companies and organizations that can't justify the cost of Oracle for their database needs...
Have you ever tried to migrate anything from MySQL to Oracle? They are *so* different. It would take *years* to get MySQL to a point where such a transition would even be considered by companies wanting to switch.
Granted, migrating from any database to another is difficult, but I jut can't see it.
Maybe the story here is this is an exercise of freedom made possible by community access to open source, documentation, and the right of redistribution.
You mean like, say, Linux?
I suppose new Linux distributions get featured here too from time to time.
Do you work in an IT related field? Because I do not. And I do not know anybody (at work) that has even heard of openoffice. In fact, I do not think it would even occur to most of those people that there might even exist another "office" solution.
I think it would probably depend more on what you actually use an office package for in your work.
I, along with my colleagues, have either a.doc,.xls or.ppt file open all day to work on. Most of us are self-employed as well - the PP got it right that many of us are indeed looking for the cheapest way to get our work done (it's not the only thing we look for, but, yeah, it's important).
There are currently two packages that I can think of that everyone I work with knows about and would consider good enough to work with: Open office and Softmaker's line of products.
There are limits. Even the happiest, most optimistic IT pro gets weary of dealing with morons, asshats, and people whose sense of entitlement far exceeds their actual worth to the organization.
This isn't limited top the IT profession. It happens in any service-oriented job (and for that matter, in non-service jobs - how many times have we thought of our boss as an asshat?).
You do realize that IT is (rightly) considered a service, no?
I no longer work in the IT field, but still in a service provider role (translator). Hell, I come across "asshats" all the time. I generally find that if I take the time to educate them on what the process exactly is, they stop being such asshats.
You may find somebody else to put at my desk, but you will *never* be able to replace me. That's why you pay me the big bucks.
I used to think that way about my kills too. When you grow up, you'll realize that there are indeed people who know as much as (or *gasp* more!) than you do.
And here's another little tip: they'll do it for cheaper too. That's one of disadvantages of competing globally.
Try working for yourself and providing all those things. You'll soon realize that they're not all that cheap.
Having worked both in large corps and now for myself, it's completely worth it to me to work for myself and try the best I can to provide all those things on my own. I have no worries of stakeholders. Just my family and my clients' happiness.
But, I realize that not everyone likes or is even capable of working for themselves (not a slam - some people jut don't like to/won't/can't do any sort of administrative work that's necessary when you work for yourself).
Every square millimeter on a Mac is labored over with the most extreme attention to detail. Even shit like the little rubber feet that go on the bottom are of higher quality and utility than on any other manufacturer's machines.
There's a difference between cheap and value. Figure it out, motherfucker.
Ci-fucking-tation, please.
Seriously, is it impossible for people to respond in something other than stoner-speak? And not as an Anonymous Coward?
but I'll have to agree with the parent pot... I've never experienced problems with HP printers. Never run into that errors, but I will say that I've been able to use non-HP branded cartridges.
Just because you've had trouble with a certain brand doesn't equal universally bad. And certainly no reason to call him a douche (can no one around here disagree without resorting to name calling?)

Sucks, but that's usually how things go.

This is exactly what I do, but even if they cut out Boxee, I could still comfortably watch through my TV using their own app (Hulu Desktop).

Call me cheap, but I would, at least.

Exactly.
It did, then it didn't.
But now I think it does again.
That's the risk you run with a Hackintosh, though.
I agree with the center of the world comment, but...
"It's a free and open standard, just not there..." isn't completely free and open.
I see nothing wrong with Mozilla taking that into consideration.
Maybe due to the US-implementation of GSM, but GSM can handle this just fine.
You don't see this problem in Europe.

That took a minute to realize you were joking.
Not at all. It was just an example of open source being repackaged and not that unique.

It would be "sort of undebunked".
It's slashdot, after all.

Well, I shouldn't say die. I *DO* wish that it'd conform a bit more with the SQL standard though.
Now donning my flame-retardant suit.
I blame my EeePC keyboard :-)

Or just let the free market take care of it. Unfortunately (in my opinion) this is what the market/consumers want, or at least will tolerate.
It's readily available in non-Apple form.

Just your opinion - just as this is only mine.
