Marketingspeak was invented by people who aren't productive and don't understand technology but survive by staying one step ahead of management types with tehcnical-sounding bullshit.
The same kind of people call themselves "IT experts" because they wouldn't last 5 seconds as an Engineer.
If you want to make a company more efficient instantly, fire all the people in that category.
Its Windows that has all the security holes, back doors and spyware, probably not office.
Don't forget with Microsoft, there's hardly any distinction between apps and the operating system components.
Thank god other OS's such as Linux aren't stupid enough to allow user-level apps or their installers to install/replace shared libraries directly in the OS, or change the way the OS is configured (registry).
Intel et al will cease manufacture of the 'standard' USB chips because of perceived market demand and pressure from MS, therefore 'generic' USB cards will dissappear soon after.
Unfortunately its the corporations that are the target market and cash-cow for microsoft. Ms doesn't give a crap about the 'average Joe' home-user kinda people.
Also unfortunately, most corporations are so locked-in to microsoft both because of their licencing agreements and the jobsafe policies of their own MIS departments, they are forced to follow Gates into hell rather than change OS's first.
>> . ..and still keep windows
Why would you want to do that? Windows sucks compared to Linux, plus you'd also need to pay for a windows licence just for your HTPC.
But from what I understand even that would only allow you to watch the 3 or 4 unencrypted local HDTV channels. (please correct me if I'm wrong).
I think at least by mid-2005 cable/satellite companies will also encrypt all non-local HDTV channels so the set top box has to both demodulate (e.g. QAM) and decrypt most HDTV signals, and then re-encrypt/convert it to DHCP/DVI.
Again, please correct me if I'm wrong, I can't find much detail specifically about this on the net.
I've am building a Linux PVR and so looking into this too...
The real isssue is that after July 05 most HDTV will be encrypted with the broadcast flag/HDCP so no PVR will be able to record it at full resolution ayway, unless someone comes up with a hack (which no doubt will happen sooner or later).
No cards on the market at the moment decrypt HDCP and none are likely to appear as the consortium will only issue licences/specs to comapnies that produce closed hardware that doens't give any control to the user to record/copy HDTV at full resolution.
they'll jump on it just because it will cause problems to your average low-tech user.
The music industry/hollywood are trying to kill-off CD and DVD as fast as they can because they are copyable.
I bet it won't be long before the only way to buy movies/music will be over the net via a DRM mechanism and traditional store-bought media (and all non-DRM players ) have a very limited time left to run.
What would it take to get some judge to order Microsoft to open their document and spreadsheet formats given that it is the defacto standard and anti-competetive of them to keep it a secret?
Why are you differentiating based on gender? Instad of taking a feminazi stance, Why can't we all just have the same rights?
In this case, why don't you promote the idea of fathers also getting paternity leave?
Do any of these units have a standard DVI output and ignore the dreaded broadcast flag?
(I want to still use my non HDCP/HDMI-compliant projector to watch all HD programming at best resolution after mid-2005 ).
Seems to be a major oversight and a major reason why I wont buy one.
Note the part where I wrote 'user-level' apps.
Yes, if you run the installer as root you're absoving the OS of responsibility. Root would not be your regular user, unless you're an asshat.

...then comes all the other ports and all forms of media...
It seems Gates is planning a world where Microsoft own and close the IBM-PC hardware spec.
Now is the time that us free-thinking individuals need to develop a GPL/opensource hardware platform as well as software.

Do you happen to know if the encryption used between the provider and the set-top box is HDCP or something else?
Yeah.
Another new TV product that doesn't support HDTV.
because they don't provide linux drivers.
Why do all these damn manufacturers not realise how easy it would be for them to provide Linux drivers and that not everyone runs windows?

I'd be very surprised if HD-3000 will support encrypted signals.

Well if you can identify it as spam, why are you allowing it through your server?
I guess from your adamnat refusal to accept the results of many studies that you're a pot user then...
Check out MAME (www.mame.net). You can have the real thing.

Except the DMCA has no juristicion outside the USA.
I guess if the reverse eng./development work was doone somewhere else they couldn't do anything directly.
