Totally agree. Its just MS paying lip-service to open-source so that they have some more FUD rather than a definate NO when people ask about source availablility.
There's no way MS source-code is available to the lowly small-company developer who (real-world example) is trying to figure out why his DLL can't add things to the STL container he passed in without crashing.
Right now with all the new harware standards coming out, ( DDR2, socket 775, SATA, PCI-Express, EM64-T ) the last thing I'd want to do is pump more money into a dead-end system, especially if I'm the kind of person that likes games like Doom3.
There are plety of games that feature religions such as Jedi etc. Why shouldn't that be enough?
I resent these arrogant zealot christians that assume religion must == christianity, and also assume that becuase they believe in Jesus they are morally superior and have the right to tell everyone else how to live.
There are all ready too many of my TV channels filled with self-righteous christian bullshit that I don't want already. At least keep them out of my games.
And you sound like a troll or an ignorant Microsoft zealot. Most 'real' web servers run on their own dedicated box(es). And if you run Ms Windows on those boxes, yes YOU DO need a licence for each one, therefore it IS more expensive than Linux.
>>Extending your argument - how exactly is Linux >> free if it requires a computer to run??
You're just trolling. The hardware cost is the same no matter if you run windows, linux or whatever on the same box. (well actually you probably need more expensive hardware to get the same performance under Windows but thats another issue). The point here is that Windows costs a licence for each server, but Linux is free to download/use.
>> And it would still be better than PHP IMHO Well everyone is entitled to their opnion no matter how crazy it seems to others...have you actually read this article?
>> I've never owned a PC that has flawless run evey game I've stuck in it.
Really? wow. Mine always works fine. But then I hand-build my own PC's, use the highest quality/standard-names stuff I can get for all components, and keep my Windows install very clean/generic. That means I always use intel CPU and intel mobo chipset, and Nvidia graphics, and don't overclock. Yes I therefore sacrifice a few frames per second but if you have faster/less standard hardware that the game doesn't run on, then your framerate is 0.
You may find it helpful to also avoid installing any redundant software ('helper' utilities, pr0n toolbars etc). especially if they run in the background.
The point of CSS was soley to be able to create separate artificial marketplaces in different places in the world by limiting which DVD's would work where.
1) I'm glad Microsoft are writing the encryption software because their concept of secure software is laughable so it won't be as hard to break as something written by anyone else.
2) When will the film industry realise that they can't win against supply and demand? If they won't supply, others will.
In the article it mentions that Spiderman 2 was only just now realesed in the UK. its been out in the USA for weeks. No one can be surprised that piracy would be rampant prior to UK official release with: a) Mass availability in the US b) Mass demand in UK
If the film industry stopped trying to create artificial markets with differential releases and pricing based solely on geography they would experience a lot less piracy.
Can anyone even tell me why some countries should have to wait sometimes months longer for movie or DVD releases? Whats the point?
At least here in Atlanta GA, PBS is the only 'Basic Pacakge' TV channel that has programming for people that can walk and chew gum at the same time.
All the other channels are endless variants of the same 3 formulas for entertaining low-IQ southerners: 'reality TV' shows, TV shopping, or ranting fundamentalist christian TV-evangelists.
Forcing it to use a config file for a older version is a nasty kludge and may result in an unstable system. Its people like you that complain WineX is unstable but refuse to realise they bought it on themselves.
Why don't you let it modify/update your config file (so you are actually using the appropriate version) then make whatever changes you need to it.
I am completely amazed by what you Americans allow your employers to do to you. You all seem to think you should give your whole lives back to your employers.
In Europe it is normal to get 35-40 hour working weeks, 20-25 paid holiday days a year and paid overtime.
In the USA you all seem to be expected to work in your own time, get 10 days a year leave and no overtime.
Just to convert that old PC you've got lying around into a dedicated Linux PVR running Freevo.
Sounds like a no-brainer to me. Pay nothing for the software, use up your junk hardware and end up with a super-Tivo++ that doesn't have a monthly fee. No filthy Windows software lock-in or MS-tax either.
I just can't figure out why all the articles don't advocate this.
that the US Senate Judiciary Comittee (and in particular Orrin Hatch) are either totally corrupted by the giant corporations, or are completely ignorant of the subject matter they are meddling with (or both).
Its boggles my mind that these bureaucrats persistently abuse their position of power yet are allowed to continue trampling on and removing basic rights of all US citizens for their own corrupted agendas.
Thank God not all governments around the world are allowed to act in the same appalling way.

>> These fucking companies say you need X to run it
They do? wow. Does that mean it'll run on Linux?
>> you really need X*2?
Is that compatible with x.org?
>> nVIDIA 5700LE
Oh well, guess you won't see the DX9 stuff then.
>> Upgrade for a game? Doesn't that increase the cost of the game?
No. It increases the amount that people with ghetto hardware will have to pay to play the game.
What alternative are you proposing? Do you really want games companies to stop innovating and not develop games that utilise new hardware/features?
Why pay premium prices for prebuilt PC's with crap OEM hardware?
Just build your own. Its very easy. It's cheaper and you know exactly what you're getting.
Depends on the computer.
Right now with all the new harware standards coming out, ( DDR2, socket 775, SATA, PCI-Express, EM64-T ) the last thing I'd want to do is pump more money into a dead-end system, especially if I'm the kind of person that likes games like Doom3.
thats about right for Microsoft Cert. Pros.
It just confirms my personal belief that people who chose Microsoft are suckers for commercial advertising over actual performace.
It seems that satire is not one of those concepts that you understand...
Err...
Only Americans know what 'nads' are, and what the second amendment is.
sorry I couldn't resist... Nietzsche is dead - God

Seriously this has now gone far enough. Scamming is one thing, but mass death threats to another country amount to terrorism.
So when does Bush plan on invading Nigeria?

So you plan on trying to run ASP.NET on linux then? If you run your web server on Winodws it isn't free.

It was all about regions, not copy protection.

I think his point was to not run WineX with root priviledges, irrespective of the actual user.
Why are you assuming you ned to chroot/run winex as root anyway?

Jeez you all should grow some balls.
Employment is a equitable business arrangement, not a marriage. You're not their bitch.
Tell them that if they want you to work outside of normal hours they should pay you overtime and give you the tools to do it.
You shouldn't have to subsidise your employer out of your own wallet, or give them more of your time than they are paying you for.
Just to convert that old PC you've got lying around into a dedicated Linux PVR running Freevo.
