  1. Dangerous Question! on Interviewing Experienced IT People? · · Score: 1
    You should reconsider asking that question, at least the way you have it worded currently. You could get into trouble. I realize from your post that you are actually favoring the older, more experienced candidates, but if you ask the question

    'IT is seen as a young man's game. My next applicant after you is 23 years old. What do you know that he doesn't?'

    You are asking for trouble. If you end up not selecting this individual, he may feel that it is because of his age and if you get sued the question will sound biased to a judge and jury. Consider something like "How has your experience benefited you in problem solving, and what is it that you have learned from it that less experienced applicants might not have yet realized?" or something similar.

    Your points are all entirely true, but just like most companies do not have a plumbing department or an electrical department, they may be getting close to the point that they do not need an IT department. It is not hard to imagine that at some point in the future they can contract for IT services they way they do for other utilities.

  3. Re:This is a monumental and historic decision on Supreme Court Holds Right to Bear Arms Applies to Individuals · · Score: 1

    So the right to have an abortion is bullshit whereas the right to own a gun is God-given. Nice personal freedoms, there. Way to go with your own intellectual honesty. What the hell is with the current collection of issues in the present political divide, anyway? How is "the right to own a gun" on the same team as "ban abortions and gay marriage"? This doesn't make any sense to me.

    Your implication is that one must be a hypocrite to be both pro choice and anti gun control, and you were modded up even though you did not present a valid argument to support this conclusion. Both stances are potentially harmonious depending on the perspective of the person wishing to protect freedom. In the first case, the person may be valuing the freedom of the expectant mother over that of the child growing insider her. That is controversial, but may be reasonable since she is known to have a consciousness and the embryo might not. We do not yet know when consciousness develops, but it may be much later than when abortions are permitted, possibly even well after birth. Perhaps there are no rights afforded to someone until they have a consciousness. Life alone may not be enough to qualify for protection, since zygotes and even eggs or sperm could be said to be alive. In the second case, the person may be favoring the right of the individual to not be oppressed over the right of an elected official to practice oppression. That part would not seem to be as controversial a stance, and would certainly not be incongruent with the first.

  4. Business Continuity Planning on IT's Love-Hate Relationship With Laptops · · Score: 1

    I work in the BCP Office of a large IT Department (800+ IT professionals) and we struggle with determining whether to by desktops or laptops for our associates. There are about 85 of the associates that are involved in our Disaster Recovery plan, and our current policy is that each of them use laptops. In most cases, they use this as their everyday machine and take it back and forth with them to work each day. Our philosophy is that if we have to deploy them to an alternate location or enable them to work from home in an emergency they will be best able to function if they are already using the PC that has all of their software, documents, email, etc. loaded on it. These laptops are, of course, twice as expensive as comparable desktop PCs and more expensive to manage. We are exploring some possible other strategies, but this is the situation right now. Do any other Slashdotters have similar circumstances at their employer?

    Due to the lack of desirable choices I intend to abstain from voting anyway. Anything I get in exchange for a vote I had no intention of using is a plus. There were several ideas for new election systems discussed on Slashdot and elsewhere during the last presidential election cycle. If we can implement a voting system that allows deservig candidates to actually have a chance of being elected, our votes will be much more valuable. Until then, I would exchange my vote for a free song download or movie rental in a heartbeat.

    I found the parent post to be enlightening, and I suspect that if there are any investigative reporters that frequent Slashdot they may be inclined to do some digging. When Microsoft was generally accepted to be evil a story on this topic would not have much zing. Now that Microsoft has supplanted Johnson & Johnson at the top of the list for best corporate reputation there is more incentive for a major story that exposes them as evil. If Bill Gates is in fact using the Gates foundation to bribe officials it could be the beginning of the end for him and Microsoft.

It seems to have all of the advantages of this "knock-knock" solution without the disadvantages. Best of all, it could be on the same plastic keless car entry device. I would love to have a keyless remote that has an extra button for my house. That would keep me from fumbling for the right key in the dark.

    Do you really buy into this web app noise? Not to say that it's not going to happen but not in the next few years. I'm still looking for a web app beyond e-mail that is worth it's time.

    Although I agree with several of your comments, this one is somewhat narrow minded. There are a lot of things that could be classified as "Web applications" that do not necessarily have an icon on your desktop. Some examples include:
    * Amazon
    * Ebay
    * Google
    * Dictionary
    * Wikipedia
    * even Slashdot

    These "Web applications" are probably more heavily used by people than the aging Microsoft Office. I can use them from my Treo, which also happens to be a mobile phone, an MP3 player, and much more. Microsoft has a lot of work to do in order to keep from becoming irrelevant.

  16. Re:Freedom of Choice on The Paradox of Choice · · Score: 1

    The parent makes some excellent points. IMHO the structure the founding fathers established is quite good. Unfortunately they chose a weak voting system. If we used the same structure but did not limit each citizen to one candidate choice the system would be vastly improved. For example, if there were 3 candidates running for President and each voter could choose to rank their choices the Independent candidates would have a much better chance then they do now. Say voter A ranks his choices as Nadar, then Bush. Nadar would get 3 points, Bush 2, and the other candidate would not get any. Voter B is free to simply select one choice and that candidate would get 3 points and the others would not get any. That way voter A could go out on a limb and choose a candidate that has less of a chance of winning without feeling like he is throwing his vote away.
