The best we can do is fine them astronomical sums of money, and set the precident that this kind of thing will not be tollerated. Even though what Sony did was bad, I think it woke the government up to the slow invasion of record companies into how we use our music, which should help in the long run.

A lot of people have fallen off Segways. Bush just happens to have the disadvantage of being President, having a bad reputation intelligence wise, and having the media nearby when it happened. Segways are two-wheeled, inherently unbalanced vehicles. Of course a lot of work went into making sure they didn't tip over often, but anyone who owns one can tell you they are not foolproof. If you lean to far in any direction, over it goes, especially if you are going quite fast and hit a bump. I've ridden a Segway several times, and like a bicycle, it stays up, but not if you lean to far in any direction. I'm not a Republican and I'm not a Bush supporter, but please give credit where it is due, and save your criticism for where it is appropriate.

You couldn't fit a powerplant big enough to run one of these in a shipping container. At least not a power plant and fuel, unless it is nuclear, which it can't be, because that would be illegal in SOOOO many ways. I think the point is that it is easily deployable, not portable. It would have to hook into HUGE power mains. It is probably made for deployment in a week, not an hour.

You could (GASP) play a closed source gaming system once and awhile.  I understand the lure of open source, I run Firefox, Thunderbird, GAIM, ect on my main machine, and am considering converting one of my backup machines to full time linux.  However, turning against all that is closed source makes about as much sense to me as religious fanaticism.  MS Office still beats the pants off of Open Office (however, 2.0 seems to fix many problems).  Windows XP is still simpler to use than any Linux Distro.  Pick and choose the best of both worlds, and I think you might be happier and more open minded.

Anyway, an open source console wouldn't sell.  Back in the day, when games took months and thosands of dollars to develope, it was possible for hobbiest to put together games that rivaled the quality of comercial releases (speaking of comadore and atari here).  Nowadays, games require huge teams of developers and tens of millions of dollars to make.  Hobbiests, no matter how organized, could not put together a constant supply of high quality games that would make such an open source console feasable.

I fail to see how this system is less arbitrary than Intel's old MHz system, which was at least based on a real aspect of the processor (3.8GHz P4 ACTUALLY RAN AT ABOUT 3.8GHz!!!!)

Add to that, the 7xx Pentium Ms, while possessing a higher number than the 3xx, 5xx and 6xx processors, are outperformed by them for the most part (some of the celerons might be slower). And its not even based on price! The nice 6xx's cost the same or more than the 8xx's!

How is this +4 interesting? By any logical standard this is offtopic. Anyway, there are simple answers to all of your questions. 1. IBM is cranking out killer PPC chips. True, but they are not cranking them out fast enough, and they are not making good on their roadmap (PPCs were supposed to hit 3+ GHz in 2004). Also, it doesn't matter, as only Apple uses PPCs in mainstream computers, and Intel/AMD/Microsoft aren't just going to switch one day. 2. AMD is cranking out killer x86 chips. Also true, but AMD does not have the production cabilitites to supply the whole industry. Their market share has grown fast in the last few years, and they are scrambling to keep up. Dell does not use AMD because AMDs total production is smaller than Dell's desktop production, leaving out laptops and servers. In order for dell to have decent prices, they need a steady supply of chips, which only Intel can guarantee. 3. Intel is not in the special olympics. True, the Pentium D may not be the best processor ever, but look at the price: 80% performace of an Athlon X2 at 50% the price isn't bad. Also, their single core P4's are still blazing fast, and no one can touch the Pentium M. Plus, Intel's roadmap is full of great processors, while AMD's is just "Well, we thought we'd make some more Athlon 64s..."

Actually, probably not too much damage would come of a bad connection, just the chip would not power up until the problem was removed. Now if you want to see smoke, put the chip in the WRONG way, like rotating it 90 degrees. I wish they would make chips that were much harder to do that with. I built an LGA 775 system this summer, and all there is keeping you from inserting it wrong is a teeny little tab on the side of the chip. Now, if you were to make an "L" shaped chip, or at least an "L" shaped socket, it couldn't be put in wrong.
