  3. Re:Multi Core / Processor on Nvidia Launches New Affordable GPU · · Score: 3, Informative

Um, been done many times before. Not only do you have SLI, which combines two cards, but there are several "SLI on a single card" monsters with two geForce 6600s or 6800s on a single card. The first dual GPU card was way back in the day, I think it was an ATI Rage. Also, Creative makes high end workstation graphics, and they have a non-SLI dual GPU card. Are you talking dual core? Well, it will probably be done soon enough, the problem is that the software support for multiple GPUs is really crappy (SLI is really not that practical for everyday use). Now, at least with PCIe, the hardware restrictions imposed by AGP are gone. I would expect to see something within six months, probably from SiS. It might take a little while longer for nVidia and ATI to come out with a dual core card, although I'm sure it will perform better.

I still don't know that I can say that Dreamcast failed. There are so many more spectacular failures out there. Dreamcast sold pretty well for awhile, not great, but not terribly. Sure, it didn't have the support of all the game makers, but there was definitely not a shortage of games. There were even some decent ones. The hardware sure wasn't as nice as PS2 or XBox, but it was decent, and miles ahead of Nintendo 64 and Playstation (not PS2 or PSX, it was just Playstation back then). Sure, it didn't live for that long, and Sega lost money on it (probably most important), but it definitely wasn't a flop like some things in the industry (Gameboy VR, anybody?)

So, at $250 for a 17" 1280x1024 display, you only need a 7x5 array, thats 35 screens, or $8750. Then you need a computer that can handle 35 screens (~$10000), and the electricity bill (400W for the computer, 35*40W for the screens = 1800W, so 1.8KWh for every hour they are on) thats a whole lotta money.

The "per watt" rating refers to power. The signal improves due to increased power because the signal is clearer, and therefore there is less interference and packet loss. As for the 7.4 bits per sine wave, I'm as stumped as you. Maybe they use harmonics or something.

On the other hand, google could always TURN evil, in which case it would simply go into the trash. This is pretty moot though, since this doesn't sound at all like something google would do. They don't usually do hardware for the masses (the google search boxes are for enterprise, and more about software anyway).

Already bargins out there for a long time. I recently bought a PC for a customer who does some hobby gaming, for $499. EMachines sells machines with A64 3200+, 512MB, 160GB, a DVD Burner, and ATI Radeon X200. I know the X200 stinks, but it works for the gaming the customer does, and the machine has a PCIe 16x slot when they are ready to upgrade, plus this PC comes with an operating system (XP Home), a case, and a keyboard and mouse (no monitor though, although they sell monitors with it). As an IT worker, I think that nowadays building your own system only makes sense for high end PCs (I built my own $3000 rig, which has hardware similar to $4000-$4500 Alienware or Falcon systems). The profit margins are really low on low end machines, and the volume prices emachines gets on parts more than make up for the cost of labor, ect... This article doesnt really describe a full system, you still need the case, a mouse, keyboard, and a monitor. If this article had been intitled "Rebuild your old computer into a gaming rig for only $500", it would have been much more interesting.
