Makes sense to me. Photoshop is one of those programs Apple uses to show how much better the G5 was then the P4 and Athlon, so it must use a lot of optimized code with Altivec and stuff. If it were simple stuff, they could pretty much just recompile it, but now they will have to port the Windows version, which is optimized for SSE over to the Mac.
If I said I was going to purchase Nintendo, would you write a slashdot story about me? I didn't think so, because I couldn't buy Nintendo. Neither could Cisco.
Yes, speed would be a plus. On today's P2P networks, distribution has taken priority over speed, because networks that are not distributed are easy to shut down. When you have a LEGAL P2P network, you can focus solely on speed, and have servers co-ordinate transfers to make things que up and transfer much faster than networks like eDonkey and Bittorrent.
Agreed. I'm using a Dual Core Pentium D computer with USB 2.0 devices, and that thing SURE isn't conserving any power! 200W idle, baby! Gotta love utilites included in rent...
He doesn't need to. All the Disney movie department needs (after firing all their staff and replacing them with Pixar, as they already have) is a hit movie every year or so. Pixar has been doing that for about a decade. I don't think this will take up significantly more of Steve Jobs time in the long run than when he was just running Pixar and Apple.
If I have told you all once, I have told you all a million times! Sony was playing god by building robots, which, in an ironic twist, revolted and enslaved the Sony management, causing them to plant DRM in their CDs, and make stupid comments on NPR. This was a plan of the robots to show how dumb and inefficient human rulers are. But it failed, and a new, commando CEO came in with guns ablazing, exploded all the robots real good, and covered everything up.
Probably not for awhile. Our cell phone system is pretty pitiful compaired to those in Japan and western europe, plus our system is not as consolidated as in Europe, meaning that hardware that works with one carier may not work with other cariers.
No, they haven't gotten it to boot linux. Believe it or not, the problems faced booting Windows and Linux are somewhat similar. The problem is the EFI BIOS. Linux can support this quite easily, and so do the beta builds of Windows Vista. The problem is that Apple has modified EFI into a very nonstandard implimentation. For instance, the iMac will not boot off of ISO9660 CDs, only Apple CD formatted CDs. This means that in order to install an operating system, one of the following has to be done:
1. Get Windows/Linux Installer to work on an Apple formatted CD (unlikely)
2. Fix the broken EFI BIOS on Apple Intel Macs (looking less and less likely, but still the most popular avenue of research)
3. Create some sort of boot loader that will meet the Mac's boot specifications, then boot another operating system that does not.
Already been done, with the late developement versions. You can have 10.4.3 running on basically anything (drivers, of course, are a problem, so don't expect great performance). The thing is, NO ONE has ever gotten any version of Windows running on the production Intel Mac (without Virtual PC type software). This seems as good a motivator as any. I am starting to doubt Apple's claim that they didn't leave "any" obsticals to people trying to run windows, as they have canabalized EFI to make it incompatable, and somehow, made it so that loading fixed versions of EFI "brickify" the mac.
Voltage does not effect performance. CPUs need a minimum voltage to operate the transistors. Thisd minimum voltager varies from batch to batch, so the company chooses a "safe" voltage that will always work. If you are lucky, your processor will run at a lower voltage than the OEM voltages. However, it may not, and will crash. The fact that this guy got 19% voltage decrease is pure luck. If you bought an identical laptop, you may only be able to get 5% voltage decrease, or even at 35% decrease.
Not really. While AMD stuff can outperform the Core Duo stuff, right now the Core Duo has a distinct advantage in power consumption. This is, of course, a power/watt compairison. If all we care about is computing power, the Intel EE 955 is probably king right now in most respects, followed by the AMD FX-60.
Looks cool. Too bad UWB uses such a huge swath of bandwidth. In a couple years, we are going to look back and realize there are no more free frequencies, and that we should have figured out more EFFICIENT ways of sending data, not taken the easy road.
No offense, but your friend is stupid. Hackers don't check to see how long you are on when they try and get into your system, the only security that Dialup provides is that hackers can't hack into your system when you are not connected. A good hardware firewall and a software firewall, along with good security practices will MORE than makeup for the security of dialup (mostly a false security). Plus, you get blazing internet transfer speedsa and much lower latency than dialup.
What huge features did you last $129 credit card payment get you? A seach menu? Widgets? XP Service Pack 2 added just as much, enhanced firewall, security center, ect... The difference, I didn't pay $129.
Actually, if you think about it, the Itanium looks pretty good heat/performace wise compaired to the Pentium D's, which have roughtly the same heat output.
This thing has got to be LOUD! Even if they put a decent quality CPU cooler in, you still have 3 92mm fans to cool the case, and SIX 7200 RPM hard drives, which have to sound like a jet engine, even if they are mounted on washers. I wouldn't want this in my living room, so it kinda defeats the purpose. I built a media center PC (that I'm using now) with all 120mm fans (except for the CPU cooler, which will eventually be replaced) software controlled for low RPMs. It doesn't have the monsterous specs of that machine (only dual HDs, dual tuners, and a Pentium D 820), but you can barely hear it 4 feet away, which makes it much more practical for actually watching TV.
Honestly, is this that upsetting? What in Windows XP needs another service pack (besides security holes, which already get patches, and even if all the holes went away tomorrow, hackers would just find more). Is there some functionality people want added that badly? At least Microsoft doesn't charge for service packs like Apple does.
Airbags work great on Mars (population 0, size 2/3 earth size), but would a 60 ton bouncing spacecraft work in India? (population ~1,000,000,000, size 1/50 earth)
If someone doesn't know the difference between AMD and Intel, they probably shouldn't be using XP 64 bit edition yet. XP 64 is still unsupported by many apps, especially the ones that "joe user" wants to use (i.e. adaware browser plugins, "shareware" screen savers, ect...). Plus, these users will get no benifit from the 4gb+ memory cabibilities during their games of internet poker.

I was wondering how they were not getting sued by Symantec, McCaffe, ect... For including anti-virus software.

How long is going to take you people to hack an inkjet into a 3d printer? I've been waiting for years for you guys!

I believe that Core Duo does support Intel's Virtualization technology, whether or not that is the "Vanderpool" stuff you mention, I don't know.

Can't answer definitively, but so far, most manufaturers of early UWB devices are quoting ~30ft usable range.

Are you saying that a CEO of a large company suggested that his chief competitor do something that might not be in their best interst?
I feel faint!
