    I'd like it if a product's cost was tied to the cost of production plus a reasonable profit margin ...

    These days are long gone; now they take what they can get, and, since that is not enough, are inventing new ways to condense resources into the hands of a select few.

    Sure, any photo taken in public is 'public knowledge.'

    Depends on jurisdiction. In Germany, for instance, you own the rights to photos that identify yourself (unless you are a person of 'public interest', i.e. politician, artist etc.).

    This would be 'adds complexity when it is not needed', but a prerequisite for understanding this is having a grip of everyday language. This might probably be too complex an endeavour if one is trained to live with 'simple' interfaces.
