it sounds like you're probably already well aware of this since email is such a big part of what you do, but have you tried enabling "nested labels" in gmail? i cant remember if its a lab or a real setting yet, but i've been using it for quite awhile. It's mildly confusing as to how it works but once you get the hang of it, its actually pretty awesome.

you wouldn't need it, but without it you cannot take advantage of x264 acceleration. This is what allows my HTPC which only has a tiny Atom D330 (dual core, 1.6ghz) to decode even the 40MBit killasample, which even most high end CPU's have trouble with.
for what its worth, my HTPC is an ASrock ION330 which i nabbed for $300, and i love it to death. I hate to say it, but i love watching my friend's facial expressions when they attempt the killasample (or hell, any high bitrate movie) on their more powerful systems. It is simply a case of using very specific directed hardware to accomplish a task - what's hilarious is that the poor little atom cries when it has to handle some of the more intense XBMC skins, yet can play all my content flawlessly.
I know you guys didn't ask for a "maybe you should buy this..." solution, however this may interest you since you're concerned with upconverting.
If you get anything with a DCDi chip in it, it will handle the upconversion AWESOMELY. I have an onkyo receiver (HT-RC260) that does it, and the SD stuff i send it (SNES/N64) looks absolutely phenomenal. (well, as 'phenomenal' as it can...)
just tryin to help! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DCDi
i 100% agree with you but I do want to point out that the scene rips you (and I!) download are not bluray quality in terms of bitrate.
Is this noticeble? in my opinion (of having hundreds of x264's but only seeing a few BD's), no.
But it is one of my biggest pet peeves when people just want to talk resolution without talking bitrate, which is a huge issue if we are talking things like netflix HD. (which is ~3.5Mbit, no where NEAR what a usual scene rip is) Pop open the codec info window ('o' if you're using xbmc) and take a look at your bitrates while watching a high-complexity scene, its probably 10-15MBit.
grab the killsample (google it) and watch a 40MBit scene. (hope you've got an ION w/ VDPAU!)
it is not different, and we (android users) still have the same problem that PC gamers have: random video card glitches, this game doesn't work while i have program X open, game X performs better in SP3 compat mode, etc. I'm not for or against it, but it is absolutely an issue. One of the reasons i have moved 75% of my gaming to the console - just pop the disk in and get a polished experience.
Anybody who did their first programming steps with QuickBasic
fyi, remember that the freshman in high school right now were BORN in 1996. Heck, i started my BSEE in '01 and i barely made the cutoff for playing around with quickbasic. Though i was quite fond of the gorillas demo game... : )
i used to think this is true, but i don't anymore. My last two machines (laptop of 3 years and PC of you know what i've discovered? I still don't click ads!
you know why? because i, like you, and like 90% of the slashdot crowd, is 'good at the internet'.
what does this mean? it means that i subconsciously filter the ads out myself - even the flashing, moving ones. Heck, the ad could literally say 'hey you - [real name] - this product is exactly what you googled for and is super cheap!' and i would not click it. not because its not exactly what i'm looking for, but because i never even give it a second thought
i sort of forgot where this post was going - i guess i'm just saying that the notion that adblock is 'evil' or 'bad' i think is no longer true - those that use adblock are the ones that would never click an ad in the first place. and those that click ads anyway just to 'support' the site are even worse - eventually the company will lower their rates because the clickthrough-to-revenue ratio has gone down the toilet.

Google is not crying, complaining, bitching, or asking for sympathy about this. they merely stated that they have axed the development of it. Hell, they're probably happy as I'm sure it was taking up resources within the company that can now be directed towards something else.
Every single company pours cash into R&D, and 90% of it goes nowhere. The only difference with google is that we SEE all those products, while other companies keep them internal. I actually think that's pretty cool.
this is sorta a joke and sorta serious, because i am also married and both of us have g-accounts; i don't really get your post though.
1) i have never needed to access my wife's account. are you spying on your spouse?
2) if not, are you using the same computer? this is probably worse than #1!:)
More like it would make sense to ban cell phones altogether in cars, whether you are driving or not.
I wish there was a way that the phone could 'know' that you are driving, and only let you talk for brief periods - for example, when your wife calls repeatedly followed by a "911" text, you PROBABLY want to make that 60 second long phonecall to find outs whats up.
they will be replaced with the much more kindergarten friendly "clime, mussell, hankerchif, iland, sammun, rite, tite, rite" (use context clues), and "rong".
I think actually the generation before me made some pretty good strides to abolish prudishness (look at the 60's?), but in general i do agree with you. I was looking more long-term, to a world where before you walk into the door at your interview they know exactly your personality, hobbies, skills, etc, because they looked it up on mytwitface.com...not that this is good or bad, just thinking that we are starting to go this way.
heck, when we were hiring interns i scraped up tons of social network stuff on each one just to see what type of people they were and how they'd fit with the other guys in the firm.
i re-read my post and it sounds like i'm saying that information that you put on social networking sites should somehow be "safe" from you getting a job.
that's not what i'm saying - what i'm saying is that if you put something on their that negatively affects your ability to do the job, you didn't deserve it anyway....let's say you are trying to get a job as a bike courier and you snap a picture of yourself getting into a fistfight with a driver while on your bike* - i would say you may not be the best candidate for the job.
If, however, you are trying to get that same job and you have pictures of yourself playing D&D, and the manager doesn't want to hire you because he doesn't like "nerds", the problem is THE MANAGER, not the fact that you were playing D&D. (or in your example, the baptist is the problem, not you)
but thats the whole point - i feel like as my generation (i'm 26) moves up into the ranks, the sort of thing you're talking about won't matter. Heck, i have tons of coworkers on my FB and of course they have hilarious pictures of them doing stuff that "aint' right".
As people that HAVE facebook pages become bosses and managers, they realize to judge people on their professional life, not their personal life - even though the two often intermingle. The important thing is that you are ABLE TO GET THE JOB DONE.
Pictures of you drinking every night? yes, that may affect your work. (and if it doesn't, more power to you!). Pictures of you dressed up going to see star wars? DOES NOT AFFECT WORK. (actually may help if you're a coder.)
i'm sorry but what the hell are you searching for that gives you viagra and porn?
Sure, theres that search everyone does once in a great while where they go "oops, definitely shouldn't have googled that", (my recent one was the audio/video app "g-spot")
but for the other 99% of the time the results are incredibly relevant. other spam sure, (like when i search for an electronic component and just get tons of keyword hits at greymarket sites), but viagra/porn?
Purchasing content for a device that is tied to one store or one manufacturer is incredibly short sighted.
i do slightly agree with you, but you have to admit that the itunes/apple model has worked exceptionally well. And when i say "worked", i just mean that 90% of kids and 20-somethings use it and love it. I know there are some tradeoffs (you hear horror stories about people losing or rebuying everything), but you can't ignore their stranglehold on the market. (disclaimer: i use itunes because you almost have to with an iphone, but i do not purchase/use it for music)
on a site like/. its assumed that you are techie enough to understand they mean that "the OS allows you to easily communicate/interface with (those) sensors."
i'm more interested in what the "activity" sensor is...?
i'm not saying that their decision to not be able to remove it was a good idea, but....
1) I've replaced mine already and had a few friends that did it. it's actually not that bad.
2) what i never really thought about until i got one is that you really SHOULDNT need to take the battery out. (except of course if it won't hold a charge) With both my oldass moto V220 and my blackjack (1), i was always taking the battery out because it locked up or whatever. I have NEVER, EVER, gotten my iphone into a state like that. if worst comes to worst, power button + home button will ALWAYS hard reboot it. now THATS good system design.
you're right - bing doesn't have that problem, because of one reason - they aren't google.
If bing was indeed better, it will rise to the top, and now those sites (and as an EE, i absolutely know the pain in the ass sites you're talking about) will start to come up on bing, and we'll be no better off. Unless you're seriously suggesting that a few MS employees that created bing are better at conducting searches than mother google....
admittedly, this is completely offtopic (maybe not though?), but i've never understood why people would be upset over having their tags (plates) on google street view. Can't i drive around all day and look at people's tags?
i mean, if they are worried that someone will catch them at [insert strip club], couldn't I just GO to the strip club and write down all the tags?
faces i'll give you - although that's almost the same. when i walk down the street, i assume that everyone can see me...
You are correct, and actually i believe out of the web-based email services, Yahoo is #1 with hotmail/msn #2, and gmail is third.
that said, the parent is correct, many (maybe not "most") people DO trust g-mail.
Hell, google can read my email, look at my attachments, watch my searches, even process/store all of my phone calls (google voice) if they want - it's an assumed tradeoff for getting awesome free services! Anyone who things they are doing it "just to be nice" is crazy...
