I can say no for sure, because even if George Bush came out and said he would squash everything pro-RIAA/MPAA/Hatch, I still wouldn't vote for him.

So, I must assume there are many more issues more important to even ol' me.

This would be more of an issue for choosing my state's Senator, though. They're the ones that seem to start these kinds of bills in the first place, and who here hasn't wished they had a vote for Utah this election? Almost as good, I get to re-elect the only guy who voted against the Patriot Act.

Libraries have lots of clauses in the laws pertaining to copyrights, allowing them to do what they do. Forget music for a moment, don't forget they're lending out copyrighted books to people for free!

Your mom is not allowed to make copies of those CD's. Is it enforcable? No.

She might like to know that due to the Patriot Act, the government can check her library records whenever they want and not tell anyone about their inquiry. Of course, it's suppose to only be if she's a possible terrorist threat. But that hasn't stopped them busting dope dealers under the 'terrorist threat'.

Personally, I don't think the RIAA wants to tackle the 'library problem'. First of all, it's not that popular of a practice. It's also quite tedious. But those things aside, I'd say the RIAA would never want to undermine a library. That's just to close to home to voting parents, and would really paint them in a bad picture.

It's not that simple. You can not point at piracy as ruining a company. You have no idea how many of those people WOULD have bought a Loki game if they had employed a 'perfect copyprotection' scheme. Running a business is tough. Look at what ID did to leverage free demos on the internet. Look how Adobe has always lived with piracy of their pruducts to their advantage. Piracy didn't magically increase one day and put Loki Software out of business. Is it even possible to survive out there today without getting Microsoft to umbrella you?

Most of the searching I did on Loki Games pops up nothing but their linux support.

    random quote:
"The problem with Loki was that they were too visionary. They knew damn well they weren't going to make a profit for a while and their business model was predicated on it. Unfortunately, Investors changed their mind about the risks involved in such a business model and Loki was forced to close up shop.

Unfortunately, that has happened to a lot of business that had great business plans in 1999 based on 1999 economy, but in 2000 and 2001, when the economy changed, they had no "Plan B". Investors don't invest the same way in a poor economy that they do in a boom one."

My family's business of 25 years when down the toilet that year, too. (Along with MANY others, and they are the sales of non-pirating goods) And it was due to the economy, and ever increasing competition. The big guys kept putting out loss leaders for years to undercut us.
What really broke the camel's back, though, was ebay.

The stat they're using is crap anyways. MP3 is on the decline because that's what is getting deleted more often off of hard drives?

That's like saying the music industry is being crippled by pirating because they're making less profit during a recession than compared to banner years when CD's were still new. Oh, wait.

Is it cool to write articles that say something is dying? Apple is dead. Java is dead. Mp3 is dead because there were 50 bazillion deleted this year instead of 40 bazillion of last year. Since when did not breaking a record this year count as "the death of" ?

And why do people always compare how crappy a 128 bit XING encoded mp3 sounds to a 128 bit OGG file? I wouldn't want either one, sorry. Nothing wrong with LAME -aps or -ape, and if there is, you should go with FLAC/APE/etc.

And why does everyone defend OGG as not having that PESKY license that MP3 has. Exactly when was the last time you had to jump over that hurdle? And commercial players like WinAmp never seemed to have a problem with doing it, non-commerical players don't need to even bother with it, and any hardware like DVD players that play mp3 discs don't seem to have a problem doing it.

It's like saying we should all learn the ever-popular Sanscrit language, so that we don't have to bother with the pesky "I before E except after C" rule.
