    With all the problems VISTA seems to have, and expensive upgrade needed, better buy a mac.
    I'd love to buy a Mac. Mind loaning me the extra ~$1000? Their commercials show a young hip guy as a mac user. Well, I don't know ANYONE young and hip that has the money required to buy a Mac. Until OSX comes to me on affordable hardware, I'm too broke/cheap to buy one. So, when you point out the "expensive upgrade needed", are you talking about buying new $1000 Dell pre-bloated with Vista or a $2000 Mac?

    All you have to do to switch to Windows is buy a new PC. They all come with it installed out of the box. They also come with all the software most people need either already installed or available to buy at your local Best Buy/Circuit City.

    One month later, it all quits working. This is due to the fact that almost everything pre-installed is 30 trialware.

    My too late question, what "niche environment" does Microsoft provide the best TCO solution?

    IMHO, Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition at $299.99 BestBuy.com does not provide a better TCO than OpenOffice for any adverage user I've met. OpenOffice may not be able to do a super complex spread sheet, buy what percentage of end users need to do more than basic cell placement and spell checking of documents? No me, my mom, or my grandma.

    Of course, OpenOffice doesn't provide a database application like Access, but I'll bet CowboyNeal's left nut only a very small percentage of users need it.

    What about multi-tasking? For example, some people may play "new-cool-guy-RPG" and also view a walk-through office document explaining how to win the game they just played $60 for. They may also want their IM client, music player, and web browser going.

    You have a good idea, but under further examination, I don't think it's really practical. I can already see my desk with a bunch of Knoppix Nintendo cartrages.
