  1. Info highway vs real highways on Cities Building Own Fiber Networks · · Score: 4, Interesting
Several people have said that our networks should be just like our highway system and that it's your responsible to connect to it, ie driveway/car, and state maintains it. However, is this a good idea? It sure sounds good, but what about the fact that it's a "privilege" to drive. Can my "privilege" to surf be revoked, monitored, or controlled like my driving habits?

Considering that the [major] purpose of the internet is for infomation, do we really want control of our information consolidated into a single entity whether it be government, AOL, or Verison?

Big Brother aside, I don't think that state/gov agencies should be in the business of business.

This reminds me of a conversation with a good friend. He thinks that he's just so stomped on by big bussiness. He works and works and just barely makes ends meet. Oh poor Keith. I personally think most of his problems lay in the fact he lives in northern CA! Yes, Keith, it's fucking expensive to live there!! your rent (split between 3 people) is higher than my trailer trash 3 bedroom moble.

He believe's things are sooo bad today.

So, I ask this question: Do you really want to go back to a time when everyone worked the farm, 4:30am-till dark, work. bed, repeat. every day for the rest of your life...which usually ended around 45 for men?

So yes, I work ~50 hrs a week which leaves 118hrs, I sleep 8hrs, leaving 62hrs to play with my son, work on personal projects, etc.

Ok, your either lying or your the typical winders user. I run a wintendo at home because I still like playing Broodwar with a friend after work. I update my system since I'm on a wireless Univ system. I have to reboot every time I update which is usually once a week.

Now, at work I use linux. When I update, I may have to restart a service. I only have to reboot when I upgrade my kernel and even then I can do it at my convience.

Don't mean to sound like an arse, but people that like linux have used windows. Windows users rag on linux because they once saw dos running and think that linux is just dos with a GUI.

When I call you the "typical winders user", I simply mean that your not security conscience and never update. Even the holier-than-thou linux zealots will admit (maybe) that there's as many if not more patches for RH/Mandrake/Deb/etc than windows. The diff is that we pay attention and install them (this is probaly because patches very very rarley break things or cause your system to become unstable/slow).

After re-reading my post maybe "lying" was too harsh...then again, maybe not.

If you would like to help us poor lazy/idiot admins maybe I can walk you though patching your system.

oh wait, your probably a winders (L)user. It's not so hard, just visit 5 or 6 web pages, click here/there, accept M$ license and maybe, just maybe, you'll be ok.
