So basically, the ACLU believes the second amendment gives the GOVERNMENT the right to bear arms. How messed up is that? I'm not saying the second amendment does not allow for any regulation of weapons whatsoever, but it clearly means 'the people' in the same way as the rest of the bill of rights. Why else would it be the SECOND amendment. The constitution is primarily about limitations on the government's power, and the bill of rights is exclusively about limiting the power and scope of government (yes, the scope of government has been 'stretched' too far).

I don't see how anyone can view this as a free speech issue. The reason NAMBLA has been under legal attack is not because they merely express their views. Its because they distribute material that is basically a how-to guide for attracting children (no I am not going to provide any links). Once a child molester, always a child molester and these people should never be allowed back into society.

Europe has had its share of atrocities too, you know. And middle eastern muslim nations have not been known to respect the rights of their citizens (or even provide means to keep them from starving to death). So put aside your America bashing for a second and ask yourself this: How would the world be different without the U.S.?

While this information might be true in the UK, it is almost the exact opposite in the United States. Companies can and do own lots of patents, which are obtained from the work of employees. I wouldn't exactly call them free, since they are 'works for hire' and the employee developed it on company time. As for companies claiming ownership of works developed on an employee's own time and equipment, I believe the employee would have a good case to fight this in court (assuming they could afford to).

The school will be sued for 'failure to provide a safe enviroment by not using a known safety device' or some nonsense like that. This, my Anonymous Coward friend, is Karma in action. For years, telemarketing companies have abused the general public. I'm not saying all companies did it, but there were enough to spoil it for all the others. The public is now fed up with the industry as a whole, and will have no sympathy if every telemarketer in the nation is now collecting unemployment. And why should they? Door to door salesmen faced a similar death when they abused the trust of the public. Any industry that seems to thrive on conning unsuspecting people out of their money will eventually be brought down. Telemarketing is dead, and the industry has nobody to blame but itself. Between the outright scams, bad deals, rude salespeople, and autodialers that make it possible for some people to receive upwards of 20 sales calls a day, people finally reached a breaking point and demanded action be taken.

OK, Peeping Tom, I'm not trying to be condescending or anything, but I think you should realize this: EVERYTHING sold by telemarketing is a bad deal. Think about it, the stuff that people really want and need pretty much sells itself. No aggressive marketing needed. Telemarketing has a success rate of less than 1% (number called vs. number who bought). When something is sold using an extremely ineffective technique, the only way the seller can make money is if there is a HUGE markup, ie. the customer is getting ripped off. For this reason, I hang up on all sales calls without listening to the pitch. If I want a newspaper, I'll subscribe. If I want to change long distance, I'll call them. Its always a better deal.

I'm not saying the Patriot Act is great, and I do think parts of it are going to be struck down as unconstitutional, but it comes far from taking away all of our rights.
