Doom 3 played exactly like Doom did. And last I heard thats all it was suppost to be. It wasn't all the gfx, it was just good old kill and jump in your chair fun. Thats all Doom has ever been.
Now you may not LIKE that kind of game, but that doesn't mean it has no gameplay value to those that did. For example, I thought Half-Life 2 was a horrible game. I loved the first one, but the second one was just mind numbing, to me. But i like the engine and I can understand why a lot of people do like Half-Life 2, so I don't consider it a bad game.
or perhaps people like me love their DS and don't see any reason to buy another more expensive portable system. Espically one with unholy load times (for a portable anyway) and less battery life.
Um wrong. The Saturn as awalways in the development cycle for Sega. It had nothing to do with Sony. Their rival was the 3DO. The Playstation, for a lot of that time, was still suppost to be a Sega CD style add-on for the SNES. As far as Sega was conerned the Playstation was a year behiend their already available system.
Also the 32X was never suppost to be Sega's next-gen system. It was their stop-gap to have something on the market until I could get a next gen system available.
As for bulky um... what are you talking about? Its more or less the same size as the 3DO and it weighs less. And the Playstation, while a lot lighter than both, is not that much smaller. You want to see a bulky system check out the X-Box...
Next time if you don't know what you are talking about... don't post. Then again... thats probably why you posted AC.
The Saturn was not a "cheap stop-gap console" by any definition.
Not only was it an extremely well build system but it had a ton of great titles. Contra- Legacy of War, Dead or Alive, a great Area 51 port, Nights, both Virtua Cops, a nice House of the Dead port, several good Shining Force games, and one of my favorite RPGs of all time, Panzer Dragoon Saga.
Just because Sony also built a great system at that time and ended up with more great titles hardly makes the Saturn a waste. It was more like the Dreamcast - great system that unfortunatly just didn't survive...
So to prove Microsoft Fan-boys don't exist you decided to be one for our benefit?
Your post was complete with the classic 'I love linux/OSX too so you can't call me a fan-boy' and 'Macs are expensive and slow' tactics straight out of the fanatic's handbook.
I do love OSX and I use Linux (though I would hardly say I love it... it just does some things a lot better than windows). And Macs are expensive. Way to expensive IMHO. And I never said Macs are slow. I said e-macs and the other crap that people try to push on are. I am sorry but I do a lot of video editing and big photoshop work. An e-mac would be a horrible downgrade for me (and many people) from our PC that we built for about the same price.
But I suppose the best counter for smart ACs like you is just to say well your a Mac fanboy:P
As a Windows guy, I've seen this before. Typical exchange:
"I just got my new $3800 super mac."
"Nice."
"Yeah its better than you. Its purple."
"... ok"
"Well have fun with your viruses and adware and M$ Bill Gate$$$$$ crap stuff"
"... I don't have any viruses or spyware on my machine... but ok"
"I'M SO SICK OF ALL YOU W1ND0ZEEE FANATICS!"
"ok, well I am going to go play great games that don't run on your system. i bought them with the $2,800 I saved building my PC myself and putting whatever OS I want on it"
(etc.)
Windows fanboys are far and few between around here. I love OSX. If their systems weren't so disgustingly overpriced I would get one. And please, don't bother linking me to the emac page or whatever (If I wanted to spend $700 on a machine that runs like a PC I had 3 years ago I would just go burn $400 and make a crappy linux box. im sorry...) i just get so tired of that. those specs are AWFUL for what i do... Anyway I also love Linux. I dual boot Slackware and XP. But lets be honest, Most fanboys are either for Linux of Mac. I don't see a lot of "WINDOWS 98 4-EVAAAA" users on the net... At least not on any site I read.
What do you DO that gets your box infected in under a minute? I mean really... I always boot up my new boxes with nothing and sit and download patches/antivirus/firewalls etc. And while I download these I never get infected.... and I use comcast of all things.
Usually this early in on a new article all the posts would suggest you throw your Mac back in the trashcan and boot up XP.
(And why is it all the potty mouths just happen to be Windows users? Is there something about that OS which encourages profanity?)
Good luck getting the Mac SE going, and if not, a fishtank mod awaits!
I am not sure what site YOU have been reading but the "bah what are you thinking? use another OS!" lines here generally point to OSX or Linux. And they usually come from over zealous fans of either OS. Not saying thats not the right thing to do;) , just pointing out I haven't heard any cheers for Windows on the Slashdot community not any really arrogant Windows fans... That usually comes from the other crowd heh.
Shouldn't they be held liable (for more than just court fees) for wasting our justice system's already limited time with junk like this? After all, this isn't the first time something like this has happened:/
well my dads old 750Mhz limped along with XP when it ran Win98 fine he has now gone back to 98. 98/95 ran fine on my old (now dead) 350MHZ desktop. XP is slow when compared to other OS including older windows OS.
Maybe because you SHOULD be sticking with Windows 98 (or 2k would really be better) for a dated 750mhz machine. I don't reacall anyone saying anything should be fast on it...
That's just plain stupid. Grandpa & Grandma want to check their email and pics of the grandkids, why on earth should they require a Radeon MegaXP293823-XtremeSLI+ to do that? I hope there's an option to disable all that cycle-wasting crud or MS may be shooting itself in the foot: how many offices will spend a few hundred dollars on individual video cards just to upgrade the OS? What about those machines with onboard video (ala Dell?)
no whats stupid is having those people bother to upgrade their OS in the first place. windows XP will be more than fine for those uses for a loooong looooong time to come.
i see no reason why that crowd will ever be forced into upgrading their OS.
For me, Firefox is MUCH more stable now. i was actually using firebird.7 during the PR time because it seemed like 1/2 the time I used PR it would just crash out to windows on me. Espically in dialog box situations (like slashdot and forums) and I was too lazy to uninstall and reinstall.9. But now that ive been using 1.0 I havent had a single crash or error - just like the good old fireX days!
My dad's retail point of sale software company for example. He has many employs. However they write manuals, train users, and sell the software. He is the only programmer on the actual software itself.
One of his former employs has recently moved on and started his own company. After interviewing quite a few people he couldn't find anyone he felt would be right for the programming job. So he self-taught himself some clarion and now he is the only programmer at his company which develops business accounting software (though he does plan to expand later on).
Granted those are both niche markets where they might make 3 or 4 huge sales a year and thats about it, but still... the lone coder is out there!
Even as an AMD man I must ask... is a 32bit processor really suppost to outperform a 64bit one? Wouldnt a more fair comparison have been a 32bit AMD processor??? Isn't it actually a BAD thing for AMD that a 32bit processor can come so close to their 64?
I too used to think lists like this made some sort of sense. But they don't. The only way this list makes sense is if you are a computer expert who uses Linux (or pirates Windows), AND you are building this computer for yourself, AND you can get the parts all from the same place or inexpensively shipped, AND you somehow managed to get all the right parts out of the dozens of different types of cases, motherboards, and CPUs, AND you know how to put them together correctly AND all the miscellaneous cheap parts you bought all work together and none are faulty and need to be replaced AND etcetera ad infinitum...
Your talking to the SLASHDOT crowd here... was that suppost to be a joke? lol. It really isn't that hard to buy the parts and build a computer for joe smoe if he actually tries. It is even less hard for the slashdot crowd. I was one of those people you don't seam to think exists and I build PCs for free for the few friends of my that can't build one on their own. Well, usually I do it for a 6 pack of beer or a free meal but at any rate I don't charge them. I enjoy building PCs. Its kind of a hobby. It takes me a few hours in total. I order the parts online the day before, send whoever I am building the system for a total. He/she (usually she. most of my guy friends can build their own PC) gives me the money. The parts arrive later that day, I build in in an hour or so. Then spend maybe another 30-45 minutes installing needed OS/software (which you would have to more or less do with any new PC from a manufacturer) and then I am done.
But back to the topic yeah I would definatly buy OSX if it was out for PC hardware. I love the way it looks, love the way it works, have no complaints. I use it on a daily basis in my gfx design classes. Nice sexi dual g5s with the 23inch cinema displays. MMmmmm.
However, the price of Mac hardware is something I just can't live with for myself. I am a college student. I don't have $3,000 laying around for some computer that will be dated in a few months. And as for the e-macs please! I won't waste $700 on a computer that can't even compete with my 2 year "LAN computer" in terms of specs. It has a tiny hd, less RAM than most laptops I have owned and they want that much for it? Not from me they won't get it. I could take that same $700 and build a very nice PC and put whatever OS I want on it.
Ive said this many times and as far as I can tell it still holds true: An 800Mhz Mac can kick the crap out of an 800MHz PC, but a $800 PC will destroy an $800 Mac.
So basically your argument is that because someone won't win an election I shouldn't vote for them even if I feel they best represent vales? Wow, you might not be blind but your quite misguided.
How about I vote for who I want (id vote independent over bush and kerry anyday) and you can keep your irrational generalizations about independent voters to yourself before I start making some of my own about people who vote for a man who can't make up his mind on a single issue.
Where is "here?" If "here" is the place that contains MIT, Harvard, and Yale, then "here" is the US. Whose high-schools are "our" high schools? "The West" is a concept, not a place. You can't say "here in the Western world." He was definitely referring to the US.
No actually I said the wester. As in the western world (Yeah yeah its a typo. Preview fails me because I always skim over what I wrote and then miss the one obvious error:)) which is pretty well defined area. Granted its not defined on a map/in a book, other than the hemisphere which would include south america and I can't really say too much for their school system, but if you weren't looking for tiny holes in my statement you can definatly figure out what I ment. However it is my fault. I should have clarified. I mean this IS slashdot. I realized that everyone was going to explode in geographical rage the minute I hit submit lol.
I also said Western World which would include the UK. Besides, their IS a pretty nice school in Oxford , OH (Miami) if you really wanted to get technical;)
Has it occurred to you that we're losing our edge, not because outsourcing, but because we haven't been working very hard to keep it? Our education system is in shambles, our young people are complete morons, and we as a culture pretty much revile the educated and glorify the average.
Oh yes. The US education system is just god awful. Worst in the world. Terrible even! Same with the rest of the wester world! Thats why everyone wants to come over here to go to Harvard or Yale or MIT or Oxford or Stanford or even our high schools. Oh and we haven't been trying hard either. God knows NOT A SINGLE PERSON in the US innovates or starts a new company or attempts to advance technology anymore. Pfft. Way to troll!
If outsourcing is a symptom of anything its corporate greed. They can save millions by paying unintelligable people to stumble along with english over the phone and have their customers take it up the arse. It has nothing to do with education. Its economics... which I belive is what the article is about...
It just shows up like another hard drive.
Yeah you have to put an image on the USB drive. Thought Id image you could skip this if you messed around with your boot loader some.
What about BIOS updates or virus recovery? Can you boot from a USB dongle? That is where floppies (still) come in handy. Unless you have a Mac (which can boot off just about anything with a "System" folder on it). floppies make good quick and dirty boot devices.
Actually most newer computers can boot from USB jump drives, USB drivers, and even old systems and boot from CD. You don't need a Mac either. My WinTel P4 system can boot Zipslack off my 512mb jump drive just fine. Its actually just an option in the bios to enable boot from other devices. My last AMD system had this option too thought I never tested it with USB.
Oh and while no one uses them anymore, you can also boot off zip drives and all those odd little discs too.
Why is it specifically a `curse' that Americans lose jobs? Those jobs mean people in a much poorer country can finally make a living.
Hmm... well, gee... I'd imagine its because people don't like losing their job... espically in a much wealthier country (like the US) where it cost a lot more to live... that can sometimes push people's buttons. espically when those moving the jobs to other countries get big tax writeoffs and end up providing the now unemployed with worse service than before via thier new unintelligable replacements. its not like this big companies are moving a call center to India to improve the economic conditions there. They are doing it for the money. Because in India they can say to hell with benefits, pay them next to nothing, not have to worry about little things like air conditioning and break rooms etc.
Posting as AC because I'll probably be modded flamebait...
Why is it specifically a `curse' that Trollers lose karma? Those lost points mean people who flame them can finally get modded up.

Way to miss the point (hint: humor) and try to drag everyone into a politcal debate on GW bashing. GG
The Saturn was not a "cheap stop-gap console" by any definition.
