If we got rid of the electoral system, candidates would travel to less populous states even less than they do. Not only that, they would literally campaign in cities only, for both the efficiencies of time (more people per area) as well as vote density (more votes per area). Suburbs, rural areas would not be considered. iow, the President would ONLY care about cities, as well as only the majority; someone who is elected to office should do their best to accomodate the People, not just the majority.
That would be true if we still lived in a similar time as when we started the system. The internet, TV, radio, newspapers are how the majority of Americans see the president. Not by going out and seeing him speak. As for ignoring smaller areas? Not anymore than they are ignored now... Every vote would count so you couldn't just screw all of suburban and rural America. That is a rather large demographic.
As for some wacko getting in, well like it or not... if the majority of America wanted a terrible candidate in office he should be in office. Besides, we vote in terrible presidents now. Third party candidates would also have a much greater chance of winning on pure votes than they do now.
Except that has nothing to do with election engineering and everything to do with how incredibly stupid and outdated the electoral crap system is. I always took that as the reason the exit polls were incorrect. It is very possible to lose the popular vote by a rather large amount and still win the election with no rigging involved. Not that I like Bush, I voted Libertarian. I would like to see more people whining about how the system needs reform than "OMGZ BUSH'S PEOPLE GOT HIM IN!1!1!".
I live in suburban east Tennessee and have had nothing but great experience with Comcast. Though I also know people who get screwed by them regularly. Internet service in totally random based on where you live geographically more than who it is from or the population around you what I have seen.
I never claimed that you can suddenly become the best CS:S player ever by playing every now and then, nor did I claim that I'm the best CS:S player, nor did I claim that every hardcore gamer is equally good at CS:S.
Video gaming is just too easy. I know because I've played since I was six years old or something. There isn't enough effort involved, so I can't take video gaming as seriously as real sports.
While I agree with you for the most part I think you are mistaking effort with physical activity in a way. That said I do agree with you. I like to watch frag movies sometimes and I competed at two CPLs, but I never really considered it a sport, even then. It was just a hobby.
I am perfectly relaxed. You're the one spouting the horriors of a video game:P
However I was very serious. People always want to put the blame on something else and get a quick fix for whatever is wrong with them. I think this is the #1 problem with society as whole right now. "Oh I can't stop playing! QUICK GIVE ME DRUGS AND LAWS INSTEAD OF EXPECTING ME TO FIX MY OWN LIFE". If you want to ignore the downside to your quick fixes, be my guest, but don't expect to me agree that it is a good idea.
As for crappy writing, I wasn't talking about your post, re-read my statement. I was refering to my own poorly written post.
Yes, lets all pass laws to make sure people do X with their time! That is EXACTLY what we need!
Another group telling us all what to do as we are so weak and pathetic that we cannot manage ourselves. What would we do without them? Other than learn to manage ourselves properly. People who think like you do far more harm to this world than some loner in his parents basement playing videogames. He might be wasting his life according to you, but what if he truely enjoys his time? Is that not what we should all do with our lives?
Don't get me wrong, I have seen the addictive force of MMOs (and drugs... and other things), but you have to look back and say "is this person in need of help?" or "are they just doing something I don't like because I view it as wasteful?". If you want to advocate a self help group or something you might be on the right path, but you suggest laws, drugs, and computer worms to force people into doing what you want instead of addressing the problem. I view that as far worse than making/playing an addictive videogame...
This is probably the most poorly written post ever, but I view editing of a slashdot post as a waste of my time:P
I actually agree with this. As someone who drank to exremes when I was underage and still drinks to excess (IMO anyway) now that I am overage, I don't really get drunk anymore. I found, actually before I turned 21, that I did not really like being drunk. I liked a mild buzz that 3-4 beers could produce. I still drink around 2 beers a night. Sometimes even 3-4. Not every night but I would say 3/7 I do drink at least two, however I never drink to get "drunk" point I did when I was underaged. I imagine, based on the rate I am now, by the time I am 30 (I am 22 now) I probably wont drink much anymore at all except FOR taste. It seems to continually decline as I get older. I just dont feel the desire to get like that like I used to in my party days. Thats not to say I will never just get hammered again, I am sure I will, but I havent in a long long time and don't really want to, to be honest.
I guess I didn't understand the article, but how are these people without any access (yet) to my system causing my CPU to overheat at will? Does this have to do with global warming and my AC crapping out? EH? I knew it was a damn conspiracy against me!

More seriously why do they say Pentium at the top and any x86 later on... those don't mean the same thing...
The big bang theory has a lot of nothing to do with evoloution as it has to do with the beginning of our solar system and, to a degree, life. Evoloution has to do with species and the way they changed into what they are now. This is EXACTLY how someone (in the case of the article christians) can be pro-creationism and pro-evoloution at the SAME TIME.
Why do people seem to think that because they read about Darwin in high school they are some kind of scholar ? Why do they feel the need to pretend to be better than people who have faith in a God? Stupidity? A big ego?
This might explain other reasons for the person to be playing on a US server, however it doesn't mean they should be allowed into the group. If they cannot communicate with the rest of the group, then they will probably whipe (get everone killed) the group or possibly ninja items (take something they shouldn't) simply because they do not understand. I doubt 4-39 (ok so pickup raids are almost non-existant but for example) other people wish to waste their time because one person doesn't understand the language used in the game. Also for the record I have yet to see a legit foriegn player who truely didn't understand basic english. If he doesn't, I would say 99.9999% of the time he is, infact, a gold farmer. If not, he should at least learn enough english to explain himself.
and what i said about darwin remainds a mystery to me. please read what i said and what the post i was replying too contained again. why is it that so many people who clearly cannot read feel qualified to speak on what is written?
Really? I always found it was much more belivable that a being of energy (or some such thing) created the universe than a bunch of atoms just made themselves and then one day got bored and decided to explode and that somehow just happened to form all that I see.
In all honesty if you pay much attention to what science has to say on the issue than nothing should really exist at all.
What version of the compliler were you using? And for what AMD processor? I tried this on my aging Athlon with an older version of the compiler and I couldn't find any such issue.
Also if you have a faster memcopy to beging with what were you doing using Intel's?
Except someone being better because they invest more time will ALWAYS exist in any online game. Day of Defeat for example is free. If a casual gamer went up against some of my friends who are entirely too into that game it would be a joke. No level difference or better gear involved. Just way more time and more money (invested in their systems anyway) than the casual gamer.
However casual gamers can have FUN playing and not trying to be #1 up with people who devote their life to games. I play WoW and I am by no means a hardcore gamer, but I enjoy it dispite the fact that I have run the end game content only a few times and lack a lot of the epic gear many hardcore players have. Heck, I even manage to take some of them down sometimes just on dumb luck (or their use to rolling over casual gamers one).
"The PlayStation 2 was going to offer AOL Instant Messaging and have characters whose facial expressions were incredibly lifelike as they progressed through the game. AIM and PS2 were never again spoken in the same sentence - and the lauded "emotion engine" didn't come close to living up to its promise."
Well, AIM was never really integrated into the PS2... this much is true. However, in EA games anyway, you can sign on with your AIM account instead of creating one. Hardly global instant messaging, but at least you have one ID and password and you can IM others on in the games...
Because I am a 21 year old college student with bills. And I can build a $900-something 3Ghz PC with a gig of RAM, a nice video card, DVD burner etc that I can dual boot Windows and Linux... and that just sounds a lot better to me than an uber expensive Mac. The closest thing to my PC (from the fsb and ram and drives... not clock speed) that I could build on Apple is almost $4k! See here... if it works. i dont think it will..
I would love to have one, don't get me wrong... but the prices... the prices... And don't say its worth it in the long run because my PC works fine lol.
However... if Slashdotters would like to get together and buy me a nice G5....;)
I think that was his point. Yes we would consider them an idiot. And if they were like most currently net users they would probbly ignor that, and the gas gage, tires, and pretty much everything else and keep driving until the car was destroyed. Then they would go buy a new one.

Actually, Gore won the popular vote in 2000.

that I just saw a story saying that IE market share (at least in the US) had actually gone up slightly.
:P
Oh well, I like this news better so I will belive it

or should 'forward thinking' and an still playing an ancient (though exellent) game not go together?
Final Fantasy VII - probably my favorite game of all time and one of the few RPGs I have played though multiple times
:P no idea why that is relaxing, but hey it is
;)
World of WarCraft - though if I am just doing it to relax I usually just farm gold
Super Mario Brothers - why didn't more people mention this? i am insulted to see it so forgotten
Tetris
StarCraft

in World of WarCraft for around 10 hours a week. Oddly I have never had the desire to harm the small people of the world. Strange?
Methinks some people are just screwed up in the head to begin with and games had little or no impact on the outcome.

Or a cable mobem into a rounter... I have no idea why you included DSL vs cable there unless you have no idea what NAT is...

I think you would find most smokers would gladly trade outside time for the ability to smoke inside the office while working...
Yes I do think foriegn products are better and so far I have no been disproven. I will stick with my Hondas etc.
Besides, what stuff really IS still made here? Most things that are marked as being made in the US are just packaged or put together here...
Why aren't we all using Macs in the first place?
