That's a good example of how blind people can be to their own ignorance. Why take the tools of knowledge away from the people when they are willing to give it away voluntarily? One day, historians are going to really be scratching their heads trying to figure out why the greatest nation in history steadily decayed and disappeared, don't you think?
These "researchers" are saying that someday there will be no need to carry around laptops. They say with new technolgoy we'll be able to use other people's computers.?????
Meanwhile at the local Barnes & Noble cafeteria...
(Me) Hey everybody, look at that idiot with the laptop! Ha-Ha-Ha
(B&N Customers) HAA HAAAA HAA HA HA...
(Laptop Owner) *sigh*...
(Me) Excuse me sir, I've gotta work on my Resume, I'm going to need to borrow your laptop.
(Laptop Owner) But you just made fun of me in front of everyone.
(Me) Yes, that's because your an idiot. Who carries around a laptop anymore? It's so passe...
(Laptop Owner) But I brought my laptop here for a reason. I must finish my final...
(Me) Quit your whinin' - step aside! I have my DFS privlidge card. By law you can't say no.
Imagine a world where computers become so ubiquitous that the idea of carrying a laptop will almost be laughable,...
The premise of the article is that computers are too big to transport. Today, that is true. But, what if the world were instead a world where computers are the size of a deck of cards with virtual I/O devices, so no need to carry around physical keyboards, mice, or monitors?
Is there any doubt out there that in the near future (10-15 years) full computer systems will be small enough to carry around with us?
I predict that in the future the need won't exist for the technology this article discusses.
Your SSN by itself isn't dangerous.
Your name by itself isn't dangerous.
Your birthdate...
Your place of birth...
Your mother's maiden name...
Your last years adjusted gross income...
Current phone number...
Current address...
etc.,etc.,etc....individually these pieces of information may seem innocuous.
But collectively, a social engineer can use it all to dress themsleves in your identity and steal your credit.
Is this news to anyone?
So the whole ribbon would only weigh about 295 tons!! Amazing. I wonder if this stuff is even visible - I mean is it transparent? Nanotubes are the new Plastic. The future is Nanotubes!
I think the major concern here is not HOW or WHY this structure could fall. There are numerous ways it could fall. The IMPORTANT QUESTION is: "What would happen if it did fall?" This is a fundamental question in any structural engineering project that must be addressed.
Actually, it could be up to 22,240 miles of superstrong materials that come crashing down if it fails. Despite the fact that this material could be light weight so it wouldn't physically harm a person if they got hit in the head with a 20 ft piece falling from space, what could be other consequences?
What about nano tube dust clouds? Assuming this material is strong enough to do it's job, then you also realise that in the event it does snap it would be due to an enormous build up of energy. Once the structure fails it will explode with a tremendous release of this stored up energy. The question then is does it reduce itself into vast clouds of nano tube dust? What are the potential health consequences of such a by-product?
If these scientists/engineers aren't addressing these issues, then we all should be.
Why does the Tacoma Narrows Bridge come to mind when considering this "space bridge"? If just one complex force we do not yet understand takes place on this "space bridge" could the results be disasterous? The ribbon would have to be about 22,240 miles long and if that structure got torn to shreads and fell to earth, what would the effects be? Has anyone addressed this question? Would it create clouds of nano tube dust particles we could all inhale? Could parts of this structure fall on populated areas (I believe pretty much half the globe lies within the falling radius of such long structure)?
Hey I'm excited about this stuff, but an engineering project needs to be considered from more than just the successful angle.
I don't see it happening - not because it isn't feasible - rather that it is much to dangerous. Geosynchronous orbit means the ribbon would have to extend out 35,790 km to the orbiting mass. If the structure connecting to the orbiting mass is compromised, the whole thing will come crashing down to earth. What kind of damage do you think a 22,240 mile high structure would cause? Nanotube jackpot! Bad idea.
P4 a weapon? These guys are higher than Jeff Spicoli!!
[Spicoli has had a pizza delivered to class. Mr.Hand stares in utter disbelief. Spicoli is obviously high.]
Mr. Hand: Am I hallucinating here? Just what in the hell do you think you're doing?
Jeff Spicoli: Learning about Cuba, and having some food.
I feel like Mr. Hand here. I mean, if the P4 is going to be considered a "weapon", wouldn't we need to classify supercomputers as WMD's? Hey, if you accept the premise, the conclusion is totally practical.
Water's ability to compress is a subjective one. A blackhole thinks it can compress water just fine, however my 1978 Honda Civic's engine didn't think water was very compressable and hence broke a rod when I thought it would be cool to drive through 1 ft of water.
Darn I loved that little car....
9/11 was the fault of 19 hijackers and the people who funded them.
Just who is it exactly that disagrees with you on that one? Or have you regressed to arguing against fabricated "liberal-minded" acusations? I thought you were all big on personal responsibility. Shame on you - no one told you to say that but you!
Whatever happened to the notion of personal responsibility?
Why don't you ask George W. Bush and Dick Cheney that question concerning their leading an entire nation into a very costly, destructive, and utterly unnecessary war in Iraq?
It's not always someone else's fault, quit trying to blame someone else, and maybe try looking in at yourself for a moment.
I think Donald Rumsfeld would benefit greatly by listening to your lecture on responsibility. He shouldn't deny his personal involvment with the U.S. Govt's toture policies. How dare he blame those lowly foot soldiers for the whole Abu-Ghurab prison scandal!
To suggest this movie speaks the truth is called being gullible. I haven't watched it and likely never will,
To state an opinion about something you haven't watched is being irresponsible. I've watched it, twice, and Moore does an excellent job of exposing a few lies and several big ones.
I've also watched, read and followed the Bush administration for the last 3 years very closely and critically. If you think these guys are doing good things for our country, you are being a good little citizen and swallowing up all that they are spoon feeding you.
Read my sig. Since you have no sources, I actually do question your capacity to think. It took about 1.8 million years for the cerebral cortex to develop to the brain you have today, so do us all a favor and learn how to use it.
What I find interesting is that the Anti-Moore crowd are so quick to point out how many distortions, misrepresentations, biases, twisting of facts and such Moore uses in a 2 hour film, yet when it comes to the very people Moore's films examine in real life (in this case, BUSH) they don't point out any such things. Gee, how could that be? Bush has been in office for over 25632 hours - and they can't find any mis-doings?
If they gave 10% the effort into focusing on Bush than they do Moore they'd find a whole lot more relevent and important distortions with much greater consequences to freedom and security than any 2 hour film could ever hope to generate.
If we want to take over another country
to take it's resources and strengthen our power base, then just say it! Don't wrap
it all in ideological bullshit. Don't say it's because the imaginary guy in the sky
told us to do it. Don't call ourselves liberators. We're bloodthirsty invaders that
worship big cars that go fast, cheap shiny toys, hot sex, big bombs, the winning team,
and pity anyone that gets in our way.
The truth is brutal and it hurts. Despite the fact that most Americans realize what you said is true (collectively), we still wonder why terrorists want to kill us! Do we as Americans really think that millions of Arabs/Islamic/Fundamentalist people are insane? Has it ever occured to our fellow citizens that these people want to kill us because our Gov't that represents us is killing them behind our backs and has been sponsoring others that kill them for decades and that our Gov't has been supplying all the weapons they need to make sure machine of death never stops?
We are confused by 911 because we fundamentally believe it is work of insane people. Really? They believe in God and call us Evil. Isn't that how Bush justifies his own actions? He, too, believes in God and calls them Evil. I think we are more alike than either side wants to admit.
The big benefit claim for this program is that you can access it from any computer at any time. HOWEVER, in order to access it, you must download the 17.9MB file first and then install it. How is that going to fly when you are at an internet cafe, or if you are anyone's computer for that matter? Is it legal to download this and install it into a library computer?
Why didn't they just make this a web based interface? Do they even realise how big the requirements for their system are going to get once the World starts using it?
It would have been alot cheaper for them just to press 10 million CD's of Linux distributions and send it to all their residents. That way they get free software. I don't know - it sounds too un-thought out....
It's stories like this that give the MYTHBUSTERS their jobs. The stars thing at 2:00pm is a joke. And the blades of grass being shot through a telephone pole...LOL.
Read my Sig. And if your sources are you, well then.....
Yeah, but this guy almost got $8 million!
I wish I were that lucky.
That's a good example of how blind people can be to their own ignorance. Why take the tools of knowledge away from the people when they are willing to give it away voluntarily? One day, historians are going to really be scratching their heads trying to figure out why the greatest nation in history steadily decayed and disappeared, don't you think?
Once Americans stop reading books altogether we can just burn the books! No one will care.
DoublePlusGood!

The future will be great!!!
Is it just me, or does this article feeeel like it was written in 1994?
All this stuff exists, to a degree, today, in 2004. What a creepy feeling....

Someone posted that the ribbon would weigh 7.5kg/km (16.5lbs/km). Geosynchronous orbit is about 35790km. So....
16.5lbs x 35,790 = 590,535 lbs
590,535lbs / 2000lbs = 295.27 tons
So the whole ribbon would only weigh about 295 tons!! Amazing. I wonder if this stuff is even visible - I mean is it transparent? Nanotubes are the new Plastic. The future is Nanotubes!
I for one welcome our new Nanotube overlords...

- Being a scientist himself, he surely knows what's good for his country.
Being a politician himself, he surely knows what's good for the scientific community. Are we getting it yet?

Butthead: "Isn't this a sign or something, Beavis?"
Beavis: "Yeah, burning Bush! Burn! Burn! Burn mother f--ker, burn!"

How much will it cost me to move from Calcutta to Houston?
Republicans: party of big gov't
Democrats: party of really big gov't
Correction:
Democrats: party of stupid gov't
