  1. Stem cell fundamentalists will kill diabetics... on The President, The State of the Union, and Genetics · · Score: 3, Informative

I'm a type 1 diabetic. I have given up on a cure in my lifetime because of the fundamentalist rants that have changed the research culture that was, once, 18 months from a cure for type 1 diabetes. We will now never see a cure in my lifetime.

The reasoning of these fundamentalists is this: abortion is endangered, so it must be said to lead to something good. Therefore, they claim that embryonic stem cells are a cure-all. These fundamentalists find it trivial to ignore the fact that EVERY human who ever received an injection of embryonic stem cells had terminal cancer 18 months later resulting from the injection. These fundamentalists also find it trivial to ignore the miracle cures arising from adult (e.g., bone marrow & cord blood) stem cells.

Who are there fundamentalists? I would like to indict, on capital charges:
    (1) The American News Media, who talk about cures from "stem cells" when they mean adult stem cells, and then talk about a ban on research using "stem cells" when they mean embryonic stem cells. They know the difference, but they lie and kill diabetics.
    (2) The American Congress, who take about cures from "stem cells" when they mean adult stem cells, and then talk about a ban on research using "stem cells" when they mean embryonic stem cells. They know the difference, but they lie and kill diabetics.
    (3) The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, which is run by genocidal left-wing nuts. They monopolized all research money intended to find a cure for type 1 diabetes, and now refuse to let one dime go to finding any possible cure that does not involve the known-fatal embryonic stem cells. They know better, but they lie and kill diabetics.

Sequel 2005 includes built-in encryption. Every encryption scheme MS ever launched had bugs so bad it could be cracked by a 6-year-old in 15 minutes. This will likely prove to be no exception. I can just see a script kiddie having access to every database that uses Sequel 2005.

VS includes something called "smart clients." This means that web servers have the same access to your PC as a locally run program. They can print, format a floppy, burn a CD, or save to your HDD. DOES ANYONE SEE A PROBLEM HERE!?!?! I remember in the late 1990's, when MS released ActiveX, and I learned you could turn off somone's PC via IE. I simply shut down every moron using IE who visited my web page. 5. this is absurd... on Is SETI a Security Risk? · · Score: 1

The one thing that every virus writer must know is how the machine he is infecting works. That's because the virus is a program that runs on the pc (try writing a Win32 application, using Mac system calls) and because it trys to jump through holes to do damage (which takes even more knowledge of the system.) If these aliens know that much about our technology, they could fabricate phony games and drop them off at any flea market, and wait for someone to find them. Heck, they could counterfit coppies of XP and sell them on eBay, or just dial in and infect us.

Yes, a massively superior computer might be able to find holes we never imagined in our systems, just like our computers can crack a WW1 cypher in seconds, but that does not mean that they can do it without knowing our basic computers, which requires paying us a visit to learn about them. Once they are here, they do not need to go through SETI.

Even if they hijacked a communications satellite, and stole the code to Windows Longhorn, it would be easier to beam the virus from that satellite after it miracuously "recovers" than to enter through SETI.

Another trick is that there are so many people who think they "know" tech, who really don't have a clue. Clueless HR departments and employers make it MUCH worse. Eventually, we'll learn how to sort the wheat from the chaff, and how to give honest feedback to the job seekers.
