The cost of portable DVD players is under $200...why cann't we build Laptops with color screens for the same price? I know...the processors, RAM, and HDDs cost money. My first IBM compatible PC was an 8MHz 8086 with 640k of RAM & a 40MB HDD. We have 2GB SD cards now. They were putting those in wrist watches 5 years ago. Can't we use a little common sense in our choices of software, and pair down the software to, say, Palm levels? Take out the portable DVD player, and replace it with the guts from a Palm. We've got room to spare, so add in a pair of PCMCIA slots and a few extra media cards (CF / SD / etc.) Also add in a fully functional USB port so we can print, connect to a network, or use a real keyboard. What you get is a cross between a palmtop and a laptop. I need one! Andy Out!

  14. Anyone Remember MS's Felony? on Wine Now Has Big-Time Lawyers On Its Side · · Score: 2, Interesting

Am I the only developer who was threatened with a lawsuit by the BSA for violating the license agreement on Office 97, which stated that you may only run Office 97 on a license Microsoft OS?

The problem, of course, was that I was playing with Wine (95) and was therefore running Office '97 on something that was NOT a licensed Microsoft OS.

I only wanted to use Power Point, which had no copmetitors that I could find in 1998. (Microsoft had a true monopoly.)

I filed a complaint under the Sherman anti-trust act for Micrsoft using one monopoly (Power-Point, which had no competitors, and did not even have a generic term like "presentation software" applied to it in 1998) to try to create another monopoly (Windows in the Operating System market.)

Maybe I'm the only one who remembers, but I'm still MILITANTLY anti-Microsoft to this day.

They comitted feolnies, and the Justice Department ignored their real wrongdoing for years. I wonder why? The DOJ seemed to do this long investigation and never found anything I thought was worth pursuing, when you only had to glance at the Office '97 license agreement to find a felony.

  17. Focusing LEDs on LED Evolution Could Spell The End For Bulbs · · Score: 1

The one thing nobody has addressed is that LEDs shoot almost all thier light straing ahead. They are almost impossible to focus accruately, because bright lights need many LEDs, and each LED had it's own first lens in it's plastic end cap. These things are precision, but not up to optical precision standards. You don't get 1/2 wavelength precision for $0.10 each. Therefore, the focus is rough, and some beams are too small while others are too large.

Also, has anyone noticed that on multi-LED lights, if all the LEDs point forward, you can cover up 1/2 the lights, something strange happens? Can you tell me what? It's not like a standard flashlight. 90% of /. users who use LED lights don't understand how they work.

Finally, I can vouch for the weapon mounted LED lights. They are amazing. Look on the bright side, with the RIAA so afraid of new technology they will be using black powder muskets by torch light when they finally spark a second American civil war (next week.)

  18. Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition! on EZTree Shuts Down · · Score: 1

Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition! We're all surprised every time the recording industry goes after honest content creators and distributors instead of going after pirates. It's like a German peasant in 1632 being surprised that the Spanish burned his house, raped his wife, and butchered his children, instead of burning witches at the steak. If you get in the recording industry's way, expect your 6 year old to be found partially burned, gutted, with her intestines staked to the ground 3 feet away.

There were no witches during the Spanish Inquisition, and there are no pirates that cost the RIAA / MPAA money. The Spanish Inquisition was about political power. These lawsuits are about stopping competition.

The MPAA / RIAA leaders are not stupid. They can see that when file trading goes up, so does sales. They want to stifle competition.

The goal of the recording industry is to shut down all competitors to their total monopoly on content. They tried to outlaw the VCR (See the BetaMax case before the SCOTUS.) They will try to outlaw every instrument that makes content creation possible without spending billions.

In every business textbook, it says that if you lobby Congress to pass laws (regulate your industry,) then you can increase the cost of entering your industry, and thereby create a competitive advantage for the big money people already there. That's what the RIAA / MPAA is doing. READ A BUSINESS TEXT BOOK. It's a specify example of the golden rule (he who has the gold makes the rules.)

So, you've got 1 option: (1) loose in the courts...no, no...you've got 2 options: (1) give up, or (2) loose in the courts...no, no, you've got 3 options...(1) give up, (2) loose in the courts, or (3) assassinate the CEO of the company sending nasty letters.

You can not hurt the lawyers without silver bullets and wooden stakes, so don't try it. Those suckers are nasty. If you do try to assassinate any CEOs, I suggest throwing garlic at them.

That's it, and that's what makes the RIAA & MPAA so deadly. That and the fact that they are in the mob's pocket more than the liquor industry in 1920's Chicago.
