But see, MS's set up would be something akin to every time you walk outside to go somewhere there's a guy waiting for you with an old Ford. Sure, you could go to your garage and grab your new Toyota (which is more efficient and has more safety features), but the Ford's right there, engine running, door open for you, so why not just take that?
If this happened every time you wanted to go somewhere you might not even know there was such a thing as a Toyota, or Nissan, or whatever, "Ford" would be synonymous with "car" as far as you knew.
As for educating oneself, first you have to be aware that there's something to educate yourself about. If the above scenario always happened, how would you even know to look into things?
I know many people have had problems with Best Buy, but I never have. I used to work at the local Best Buy, and it was always stressed that we be as polite as is humanly possible to customers. True, we were pushed to offer PSPs and PRPs, but it wasn't that big a deal. It's been several years since I worked there, but if anything things have improved. I bought a $40 DVD player a year or so, and at least four people asked if I wanted the PRP with it (this would have cost around $25-30 IIRC), I said no to each and they dropped it. That's a minor inconvenience at worst. Also, I've had a few things (expensive items that I felt the PRP was worth getting for) that have been replaced without question, they look at it, ask what's wrong, give it a cursory once over, then put it through for you, easy as that.
Actually, I did have one issue recently, but that was with the individual not the store. I brought a TV abck that had a large magenta spot in one corner. After waiting for at least an hour in line, and being passed up several times for people who hadn't waited as long, I finally made the guy deal with me. He plugged the TV in, ran a magnetic wand over the screen, then said "there, it's gone." It most certainly wasn't, if anything it was worse, and I said as much. He argued for a minute, then I just said "look, it's still there, and I want a replacement or a refund, period. I'll talk to someone else if I have to." Without another word he put it through, I went and grabbed another, and that was that.
That was one guy, I've never had a problem like that before, and it was extremely busy that day so I couldn't really blame him for being on edge, though there's not a chance in hell he didn't see the spot, so he was deliberately bullshitting me. Whatever.
I can't say there are no problems at Best Buy, but that's not a universal experience.
Also, it's pretty obvious, at least I think so, that Doc Ock didn't throw that car.
When Peter and MJ get up and look back out the window, he's not even in sight yet, he's still coming up a side street. Given that there was a building between him and the diner, it's unlikely that he threw that car. Also, the angle was fairly shallow, so it wasn't thrown over a building, and it came straight through the window, so it came from right out front, not from either side. Unless Doc Ock threw the car, then retreated up that side street and approached again, he didn't throw it.
I figure it was probably someone trying to get away from the approaching menace, or was a side effect of something else Ock did and not a direct action.
I know, let's make sex illegal! After all, kids shouldn't have sex, it's bad for them, so let's outlaw it. How about alcohol, after all, kids drink it and it's bad for them, so we should make it illegal. R rated movies aren't good for kids, but they sneak into them anyway, so let's get rid of those too. And Red Ryder BB guns, some kid could shoot his eye out, so we'd better make those illegal too.
Once you start using the "won't someone think of the children" argument, there's no end to it. In the end it comes down to responsible parenting/guardianship. Kids only have the money that you give them (unless they're stealing, then you have bigger problems than video games), or only have the things you buy for them. If you can't see the large "M" on the box, and don't realise that a game called "Grand Theft Auto" might contain questionable material, that's your own fucking fault. It's about time people in this country take some responsibility for their actions.
Actually, it's Michael Moore who tends to laugh things off, claiming that it's comedy so there's no standard of accuracy to follow.
Ann Coulter is, however, a liar. And a mean one at that. She's got a definate political agenda, and she won't let the truth get in the way of that. Her tactic, when confronted with her lies, is generally to claim she was misunderstood, or to claim it's all a tactic by the "liberal media" to discredit her.
Spinsanity.org has several manygoodarticles about these things, in case you want to make sure we're not slandering her or anything.
What I'm wondering is why no one has thought to market tablet PCs to artists yet. Alias makes some fantastic tablet art software, but none of the hardware manufacturers seem to get it. Whose needs are better fulfilled by a tablet PC than an artist? As an artist myself, I'd love to be able to draw directly into my computer rather than having to scan and clean up my drawings. Yes, I have a Wacom tablet, but I really need to be able to see what I'm drawing as I'm drawing it. Gabe, from Penny Arcade got one for exactly this reason.
What I'm hoping is that Apple realises this, they have a long history with artists and designers, and designs a tablet from the ground up with artists in mind (I'm thinking a convertable design, built like an iBook for durability, contoured so it's easy to hold). I also think the OS X gui is damn near perfect for touch screen navigation, or better than XP in any case.
Oh well, just one of the many things that has been on my "I hope someone makes this some day" list for some time.
So the Mac you bought a few years ago doesn't meet Panther's minimum requirements? The PC I bought a few years ago doesn't meet Windows XP's minimum requirements.
Cry me a fucking river.
Central government takeover of aspects of the economy, such as the 17% represented by the health care industry is certainly fascist.
Actually, that's closer to socialism, governmental control of the economy. Fascism is a totalitarian political system that limits the rights and freedons of those living under it.
PATRIOT? You mean the act that requires warrants for all searches? Yes, it does.
True, it does, but it doesn't take much to get one. And certain acts that once required more than a warrant, a wire tap for example, now require only a warrant, which themselves only need to be justified in the name of "intelligence". In fact, anyone can be investigated, and their possessions and personal information seized, with little or no justification.
From http://www.texasbar.com/globals/tbj/2003/jan/right s.asp:
Under this rubric, the Attorney General may seek surveillance or a secret search of an American citizen under FISA
which requires no showing of criminality and then share that information with the FBI, which can broadly disseminate it among government and local agencies. Sec. 206-215, USAPA. See also Sec. 219, Single Jurisdiction Search Warrants, and Sec. 220, Nationwide Service of Search Warrants. [my emphasis]
Perhapse... But he certainly plays fast and loose with the truth. For example, Bush has said that Iraq and al Qaeda are in league, this has yet to be proven, and, given their extremely different ideologies, very unlikely. Even Rumsfeld has said as much. And where are the weapons of mass destruction Iraq was supposed to have? And why aren't we attacking Iran, who is know to sponsor terrorism, and who has been found to have nuclear materials? And what about the claims that the Iraqi people welcomed the US forces as their liderators (that oh so perfect image of the statue of Saddam falling was largely staged, many times the number of people who were there marched in protest of the US opposition only days later)? Maybe he's not lying, maybe he really believes everything he says. I'm not sure which would be worse.
I suppose looking in the Applications folder and clicking on the one called "Terminal" was too difficult?
Just a note, it's probably not a good idea to admit to doing somehting stupid as a way to make a point.

Exactly.
