  1. Re:Unix compressors on A Look at Data Compression · · Score: 1

So, it is perfectly sensible to include a non-UNIX compression utility in a UNIX compression utilities review? WinAce does have a decompressor for UNIX, but no compressor, therefore shouldn't it have been dropped completely for this review because of that? Because it is irrelevant to this review if there is no UNIX compressor for it and this is a UNIX compression review.

Sorry for nit picking, but come on how can you go use WinACE on Windows to do the size compressions and then use all the other compressors on UNIX, now that really skews the results. Now this review doesn't seem so trust worthy now doesn't it due to complete lack of details as to what environments he really did use. Seems just like those half-ass'd hardware reviews where they provide you no real information and just to show off what they want you to see, and not the whole picture.

I am a licensed indie Torque owner and I have to say it is a very impressive game engine when it comes to cross platform game development. Not only does it run pretty smooth just like games such as Wolfenstein: ET and Tribes 2 (T2 was actually not really good on Linux compared to it on Windows) its source code is actually gcc friendly.

About Tribes 2, its Linux port wasn't very good and it choked from time to time for no real reason and Torque engine doesn't have this problem. The real history of Torque is that it came about right after Tribes 2 was released and GarageGames company was formed which are several former Dynamix Employees (even the founder is the founder of the company) working at GG. Torque Game Engine I have to say is far better than the old Tribes 2 engine (if you worked with Tribes 2 and then Torque you would know exactly what I mean by it).

Anyway the engine is pretty good in my opinion and as a note to those Quake lovers Torque doesn't do BSP structures for the whole map. It has a true terrain system that goes on forever and no it doesn't loop all the way around (but I've seen mods pull this off :). It uses BSP structures for what is called Interiors which are basically buildings and the GG community has been making great advances in the game engine for several years so it isn't something that will sit there and idle for months, it's always being worked on by several groups of people. So the whole game engine development is mainly driven by community resource submissions.

I guess I've talked my head off long enough and put several readers to sleep, sorry. Check out the site for yourself and maybe consider getting a license (please read the license agreement before forking over cash for it since I've seen many people ask questions about the license AFTER they bought it!)

The thing is spammers use WHOIS databases to pull valid email addresses off and even other registrars to try to get the domain owners to switch over to their services and that gets very annoying. Plus the fact who in their right mind would want to freely release their personal information over the Internet, well you're doing the same thing by filling out those WHOIS records correctly. I have the right to protect my privacy and that is what I am doing when I do not fill out the WHOIS records with my correct information.

Besides the domain registrar already knows my full correct information since they billed me in the first place. You also have to remember that times have changed, the WHOIS database is just a collection whore house for god knows what to collect and use for whatever they want.

My point is why enforce such a useless law? People aren't going to follow it because they know better and like I myself do not want people getting my phone number, address to my house, and email addresses that would just annoy the hell out of me because some bastard wants to sell me his penis enlarger pills.

I think the right thing to do is require that the registrar should have all the correct information and that only a reach able valid email address is used, but of course if you try to contact that person using the email address in the WHOIS record you'll just have to wait several days so that personal has a chance to clean out all the flooding incoming spam and get to a legit email.

Also plus the fact that a WHOIS record with valid information helps thieves steal identities.
