  1. What is this FUD? on Technology Makes New Cars Too Expensive to Fix · · Score: 1
Add to it the cost of specialized training and equipment (for an aluminum-body repair shop: $200,000) or even the cost of new parts alone (xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights: $3,000 each), not to mention the knowledge base required (over 1 million pages, available only electronically vs. 100 pages 20 years ago) and a labor shortage.

    1) Xenon HID systems do not cost $3k per bulb. Maybe for a Mercedes SLK 600, but every part on that sort of automobile is pricey for the simple fact that not many are sold, plus you have to add in the fact that many luxury car owners feel like they MUST spend thousands of dollars simple components because they feel a sense of quality with the expenditure.

    2) 100 pages? I have a stack of books for cars ranging from 1969 to 1998. The repair manual for a 65 VW Beetle is approx 1200 pages alone. The one for the 69 Corvette is 980 pages. Are we comparing 1/10th of a manual from the old days to the vast archive of information available today? The one for my 98 Volvo is 1100 pages, but it does not cover the "propritary" information such as how to decode OBD signals and turn them into readable codes.

    3) Labor Shortage?? Riight. Why are there very few mechanic jobs posted in my local paper? There are about 20x the number of open IT positions compared to mechanical repair.

/born to be a mechanic, forced into IT due to a lack of jobs/income associated with auto/commercial truck repair.

  2. The IPO and the media on Still More Google IPO Speculation · · Score: 2, Insightful

This IPO speculation is the only reason the media is giving Google so much attention over Gmail and every other little move they make.

I give it 6 months before /. people quit looking up to Google as some really leet organization. As soon as the IPO is launched, the people who made sure it got the media coverage will get richer and Google will, in effect, lose it's soul.

I'm not sure what the facsination is with companies and their going public. Sure, we would all like to have a little chunk of something cool, but you have to remember there are going to be much more powerful people who will cut corners and make Google the most efficient, productive company they can. The result: an uncaring attitude towards the technologies and efforts that previously went into building the company.

It happens every time. Just give it a while. For instance, the ISP I used to work for employed a number of really good, well known people in the Open Source movement. They were weeded out in an effort to move towards efficiency; or in other words: they were replaced by people fresh out of school that would write so-so code for $50k/year.

Walmart has been breaking the bank on Georgia's medicare system for almost 10 years. We only hear a week before it bankrupts that Walmart was the biggest contributor to it's demise. Did anything change? Nope. Will it? Nope. Big business controls the media treadmill to a great extent. Especially publically held companies where suits in said media company own a large number of shares, personally held or held by the organization.

The only coverage I have seen on any of the media treadmills has been relatively positive when covering DirecTV's efforts. I see no reason for it to be otherwise, considering such coverage can affect attitudes when it's time for CNN and Fox to renegociate contracts with DTV.

Just look at how aggresively Dish was censoring captions on Comedy Central (and other stations) when they broadcast the captions warning the channels would no longer be broadcast if Dish did not work with them. Black boxing the text to avoid their customers even having knowledge of the failed negociations.

This is also civil court, depending on the judge, a simple credit card transaction for a smart card programmer may be enough to win a decision for them.

Even if they didn't manage to win against you, all they need to do is show the document "If you sue me, I will sue you for 10X!" and your goose is cooked. It's likely the judge will just say "Sir, you can't sue someone just because they sue you." and throw it out. Even if it didn't come to that, simply showing the court your letter would demonstrate that you have a combative character and may be trying to hide something.

If you have not noticed, it's on the Fox and CNN treadmill, too. This is getting huge coverage and we know Gmail won't be blocked, it can't be undone unless nobody wants it. I'm guessing one of the big boys over at Clear Channel owns a lot of Google stock and hatched controversy that turns out to have a hunky dory ending that leaves Google with free advertising of epic proportions. Not to sound like an angry teenager, but things like this don't get that much coverage unless there is some dark forces behind it.

If geeks are inheriting anything, at least in the USA, it is probably an unemployment check.
