  1. To borrow from Snow White on Red Hat Cornering SCO in Delaware · · Score: 1, Funny

The SCO situation is best summarized in a little ditty popularized by the seven dwarves.

(sung to the tune of Hi-ho)

    SCO, SCO
    Off to court we go
They have no bucks and are out of luck
    SCO, SCO

  2. Re:Will Metallica support this Napster? on Napster Tries Again · · Score: 1

My bad...I should have looked more closely at first. You can't buy individual songs off St. Anger. You have to suffer through the entire thing if you want to download it. So now they will have $10 gazillion plus whatever profit they get from the two copies of the downloaded album they sell.

  3. Will Metallica support this Napster? on Napster Tries Again · · Score: 3, Interesting

After reading this story, I thought I would go check out BuyMusic.com and see if anything has changed. Low and behold on the front page is a banner advertising the Metallica album. Funny that they were one of the most vocal bands against P2P and Napster in particular.

I find it quite ironic that they are now giving in and have St. Anger available on BuyMusic.com (nevermind that the album completely blows but that discussion is for another day). I wonder if they will be on the Napster? Since both sites use the draconian DRM so well implemented in WMA, this should make them happy. Now that can sell a few copies of songs off that crappy album and increase their profits from $10 gazillion to $10 gazillion plus a few bucks.

  4. Intel can try all they want on Will Vanderpool Make Linux More Popular? · · Score: 2, Interesting

but if MS gets a hold of the bios like a recent article has stated they are trying to do, MS can lock out any OS they want with their "trustworthy computing" initiative. We all know that "trustworthy computing" is a metaphor for complete and utter lockdown by MS so your machine will only run Windows in the way MS says.

Let's hope that Intel can buck the MS trend and do something like this.

  5. Re:*gasp* on SGI Compares Linux & System V Source Code · · Score: 5, Insightful

I am really starting to believe the theory put out earlier that this is a a real pump and dump scheme. In Darl's contract, it states that he is in for a big payday if there are four consecutive quarters of profitability. The four quarters are over in February which conveniently is the time the IBM countersuit is supposed to get going again after the continuance.

As much as this whole fiasco sucks, you have to give Darl credit for being a master at pump and dump here if this is the case. Come February, I would not be surprised in the least bit if there is a sudden resignation by him and he relocates to somewhere in the south Pacific or Carribean.

  6. Re:RTFA on South Korea Jumps To Open Source Software · · Score: 1

  7. The Dam has Broken and the Floodgates are Open! on South Korea Jumps To Open Source Software · · Score: 1

This one is big....real big and it means big trouble for MS. Losing a city like Munich or even one state like MA MS could absorb but an entire country like South Korea? If I was Ballmer, I would be getting my assistant to fetch me those Depends because he should be shitting his pants. South Korea is a major economic force (relatively speaking, i.e., compared to Peru and Brazil which are dabbling with OSS) and when they do something in the computer and electronic industry they don't do it half-assed or haphazardly.

This is a major blow to MS, but not undeserved and no, I am not just automatically anti-MS. This is just that old adage "What comes around, goes around." MS has sown the seeds of discontent themselves by overcharging and maintaining an iron-fisted and draconian grip over the software industry.

Yeah he says "SCO is smoking crack" but don't you think that he would really like to kick McBride in the balls and when he falls to the ground, spit on him for good measure?

that Joe Schmo out there with the Windows machine will be pretty much sticking to WMA. Sure hardcore audiophiles can tell a difference between formats but the average computer idiot doesn't care.

The saddest part of all is that WMA is a beast that is growing and will be hard to get rid of. Since MS has submitted this format for inspection for widespread adoption, they will continue to force their way into this becoming the de facto standard even though it sucks ass. More importantly, because of the draconian DRM, WMA is the format that the RIAA and other head asswipes at recording labels are drooling over. They could really care less about the quality of their digital music as long as they control the rights management on it.

Until more portable players support formats like ogg, WMA will be an immovable force, the 800 hundred pound gorilla that will be difficult to move.

because until the RIAA hunt down every single P2P filetrader, people are going to continue to do it. Certain drugs are illegal but people still sell and buy them because the government can't stop every single person. Something that could be added to a potential complaint is based on the following article posted elsewhere. ICYDWTRTFA (In case you don't want to read the f**king article), the bottom line is that SCO will gladly sell you the license BUT they will not send you a copy of it through the mail! I wonder if they know they could be committing mail fraud by doing so? It is just very, very strange that they will take your money for a license that you are not allowed to have a copy of. But then again, you do strange things when smoking large quantities of crack.

  21. If Google ever decided to do this... on Google Wins the Filesharing Wars? · · Score: 5, Interesting

then they would certainly rise to the top. Their search engine is by far head and shoulders above the rest. It is fast and efficient. However, I am not sure of two things.

The EFF can push all they want but I seriously doubt filesharing will ever become legal, even under a compulsory licence. The RIAA is now equating P2P with kiddy porn and therefore the reactionary dumbasses in Congress will jump on this now.

Second, Google picks and chooses its battles carefully. The recent purchase of blogging company illustrates this. I think they would have to decide that it is worth the hassle assuming again, it became legal in the first place.

In the event all this ever pans out, I, for one, will welcome our new Google overlords. (thought I would just go ahead and get that out of the way.)

My only fear for Google is what dooms many of the other search engines, that is, they sell out to the man. They become an advertising whore and make their searches completely worthless. A prime example of this is Microsoft. I know they are in the process of revamping their engine, but let's be honest, if they keep up the advertising whoring, nobody except the ignorant masses that use MSN as their ISP will use the engine.

Stay true to the cause Google! You are the best.

  25. Next you thing you know... on RIAA Parses 'P2P' As 'Peer 2 Porn' · · Score: 3, Insightful

is that there will be a bill forcing us to use Microsoft products because of their restrictive DRM built-in. As preposterous as this sounds, think about it for a minute. Microsoft is pushing DRM all over the place, including in Office. RIAA is desperate to stop file trading so if they were get to an inroads to making people have DRM-enabled software, they would be jumping for joy. If a bill like the one proposed is pushed through, this is the next logical step. P2P software will have to have DRM and guess is more than willing to do this for you?

Preposterous you say. Again, think about it some more. MS is pretty good at buying politicians (and business execs, but that is for discussion on another day) so they could easily get something as ludicrous as this pushed through Congress. You think most Congressmen and women really have a serious clue about technology and stuff? If the RIAA successfully gets P2P associated with kiddy porn, the hammer will fall. I am certainly against child porn but this is a quite low-handed advertising. Nevertheless, this could be just the thing needed for Microsoft to really push the DRM. The thought of this just makes me shudder.
