  1. Just did this, DMX4, Suse 10, Oracle 10g. on Which OS Performs Best With SSDs? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Wasn't a massive test. Used Swingbench against 170g database. Quad core, 2gig. Disks were 300g 15k fiber, dual pathed. Swingbench seemed to be like 50 users running VERY poor queries, so this was almost 98% reads. Ms response time was between 3-4, cache hits minimal. Added EMC (1) 146g SSD into the disk group. Response time hit .4 to 1 ms response, identical tests.

Want to see something cool, check out IBM XIV. I will grant you that unless your in Israel, there is no customer visits in your future... The "E" guy from EMC went off on his own and built it (IBM bought him). He's been credited for EMC cache algorithms which pretty much put the DMX in front of everyone else. Obligitory droids comment. This is not new anymore than Microsoft inovating.

  5. Real life story of the back hoe on The Backhoe, The Internet's Natural Enemy · · Score: 1

I worked for a major online car advert website (at the time was in VA). This is during the MCI/Cable and wireless fiasco. No one was quite sure who owned what. It turns out that a back hoe killed a line in Austel (SP?) Georgia. After around 17 hours downtime (100% internet business) the line is back but the DL3800 on CW seems to be having issues. The 2am tech dropped something (grounding screw i think she mumbled) inside while checking it out and smoked it. When the MCI guy asked to speak to the senior technician, she stated, "I are the senior technician.." At 6am the next tech was on shift and cycled a cascade router (think that's what it was, not my area) and we were back in 2 minutes.

  7. Actual System vs. Systems requirements on What Should People Understand About Computers? · · Score: 1

I constantly get calls, "I can't play this game/load this software." Tell people how to check thier proc. speed (also helps ebay fraud). Tell people hot to check thier memory (vs. hard drive, see above posts). How to read the bottom of the box thier software came with BEFORE they purchase. Real world example: Microsofts latest flight simulater will not work on an 800 Mhz machine even after buying that Radeon 9600, removing 2000 for windows XP and upgrading to 512 ram. Expensive lesson. $5-$600 bucks later, you realize you could have overnighted a brand new Dell to fix your problem for $350.

Sorry, I have to disagree. Those atronauts were furthering mankind and died in the pursuit. Most of the starvation could be solved if (not to make fun) we sent them luggage instead of food. They live in a desert with no food or water.. That's not a tragedy, that's natural selection.

Because places like this exsist really bothers me. RL example. I have my yahoo account for spam/ebay//. whatever. I have my sneaky RR account that never gets spam. Started building an MI home 4 months ago, on my contact info, i put down my RR account. Withing a few days, i'm slammed with refinance, mortgage, home improvment, and contractor info. A few days later, viagra and breast enhancement... A collects info, but will only sell to partner B, B gets the info, but only will sell to C,D.. Whenever someone says they will only share infomations with thier "partners" is bogus. The whole spam/marketing arena are "parters" eventually.
