I remember being very confused the first time I used the Recycle Bin. On my Mac, if I wanted to throw something out, I put it in the trash because that's where things I didn't want anymore should go. But the recycle bin? I don't want three old images to be mixed together and then one find a not-quite-as-good image waiting on my computer the next day.

Seriously, there's nothing I want to extract and reuse from my unwanted data. Don't confuse me with different names just because you're trying to be "different". What if GM called the steering wheel the directional input? Crimeny.

Don't forget Mario Tennis. That game is great on any platform, but the VB had it better than the rest simply because there was absolutely nothing going on but gameplay. There weren't flashing colors in every corner of the court distracting you from the ball back and forth, you had good control of your koopa, and it got to be habit to select Yes when it asked if I wanted to continue destroying my retinas.

The more I think about it, that's one of my favorite games of all time.

    You're right, it was hyperbole.

And you're right too that the Sedition Act of 1918 was nasty. But they didn't have much in the way of logs, surveilance cameras, or hell, even tape recorders back then, and what little technology that was at their disposal could never have been turned into a way of keeping tabs on the entire population.

The thing is, the Sedition Act was just a law, but that's doesn't mean it was possible to enforce. Prohibition? Last I checked I have a beer in the fridge. Laws, no matter how good or bad, have to be enforcable for them to do any good.

What's scary about the Patriot Act is that not only is it possible to enforce, but there is ample room for the government to overstep the already extensive bounds its given itself. A government by the people for the people should not depend on secret courts granting waivers from warrants to invade privacy, without any knowledge or opportunity for defense by the citizens accused. The problem with the Patriot Act is as much its tolerance for abuse as what it actually allows.

And one final point... if the time has come that even Bush's defenders are comparing his work to some of the worst bits of American history, isn't that kind of making an argument against him in itself?

There is a non-redundant part of this post, though. For those who don't want WMP anywhere near their mac, MPlayer is an excellent open source alternative that handles all kinds of video formats, and is overall a great player. Its WMV support is kind of shaky, but most files still play.

Nevermind that I have a spotless record (not even a traffic ticket, or even any misconducts while in college... and who doesn't have a few of those?), I tend to get singled out at border crossings, customs, whatever, and of course every time I get through without a problem. I can't really say I mind that much - a moderate amount of security is a very good thing, and it does make me feel safer to know that the people doing the job aren't doing it half assed.

All of that said, the place where I have guns pointed at me the most, and I mean by far the most, is in the US. I know what I'm doing in an airport, it's not like I'm doing anything special to get attention for myself like walking through Do Not Enter doors in search of the bathroom. I'm a voting citizen who's never been in trouble for anything, and the only place in the world that sees fit to put me at the end of a rifle muzzle over and over again is my own country.

Spyware on the mac doesn't exist in the same way that it does on PCs (and really what's being described is more adware than spyware, but whatever). There are unscrupulous programs out there, and they do transmit information about you that you might not want sent. For the quick and dirty method, try running Little Snitch sometime and keep an eye on connections. Most of the time it's just the software developer trying to make sure your serial is valid, but I've run across a couple of programs that initiate direct connections to web advertising firms - and if that's not spyware I don't know what is.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is that while it's more worthy of a version number update than past releases, those past releases didn't deserve it either.
