but no one seems to understand the question.

I'll try to make this as easy to understand as possible. Imagine this scenario...

Your |insert computer illiterate relation| needs help fixing something that VNC'ing into their box would easily fix. However, because you recommended that they put their windows box behind a firewall, which oddly enough they did, leaves you without the ability to easily connect to their machine without yet another couple steps, mainly setting up their firewall to allow you to connect to their machine.

How do some of you make the task of connecting through this firewall easy without the more daunting task of walking them through re-configuring their firewall to forward your request to their desktop. Since, if your walking them through that you could have probably just walked them through the other problem they had, like not knowing whether or not they wanted to continue or cancel what they had been doing. ;)

What is wrong with some of you people? Do any of you honestly believe that if nvidia just started giving away their drivers code it would all change? I see people saying it all the time. I'm beginning to think they are saying it just for the sake of being able to throw a remark in about a company having code for linux that isn't open.

The biggest problem I see with the state of gaming on linux is the lack of anything worth playing, and in my opinion is because of the lack of games with quality graphics. Wesnoth keeps getting mentioned but if I'm being honest the graphics are subpar. Whether some of you want to believe it or not graphics go a LONG way in selling a game. No matter how good the controls or gameplay are its hard to sell a game if the graphics look like they came from a scrapped game from the early 90's.

It's not like it can't be done look at Doom 3 and UT2K4 I just went and bought both because they run in linux and have excellent graphics. Just need some good CC:Generals type clones now, I think thats the real time strategy category.

I have to apologize to the person I ended up replying to, the first few sentences weren't directed toward you specifically it just so happens reading your closed source video driver comment is the one which pushed me over the threshold of feeling the need to actually reply.

    How do I play LSN?

The easiest way to learn how to play is to download the LSN software, install it, and play through the tutorials. The software is only 10.5Mb so it shouldn't take longer than 30 minutes to download with a 56Kbps modem, and you don't have to pay for it. You can also download the manual which will explain not only how the game functions but also covers strategies and tips you can employ.
The game is played in 'turns' which represent 10 seconds of real time. Both players issue instructions for their units and the LSN software sends them to our central game servers for processing. The game server calculates the outcome and sends a results file to each player. This arrives in your email in-box, and all you need to do is 'open' the attachment to start LSN and play the next turn. A single game will last about 15 turns on average.

Whats this about using e-mail to play the game.. so what you have the thing open for a couple minutes at a time? Seems like a real PITA to me. Though I do recall seeing some computerized versions of board games that used this method. Still seems like a pain...

Care to provide any information on why you think the windows and mac interface are better?

I've recently converted a friend over to Linux, hes still just running off a Knoppix CD, I gotta take him this CD over to him and sit with him while /HE/ installs it. He can install Windows 98 through Windows xp and is FAR from computer litterate, but can remember a process like no other. I've just shown him how to do it and he does it. Keep in mind that all I did was create a tohdd fromhdd knoppix install. I wrote down the boot line for him and told him to use that when he needs to reboot. Then let him loose, I stuck around and played video games while he did what he does on his system, the only questions he needed to ask were "Whats the name of the program that does x?", "Whats equivalent to the control panel, oh nevermind found it." and "How does copy and paste work?" I explained middle clicking, klipper and its features, he thought that feature alone was worth getting rid of windows! Anyway, after a week I asked him how things were going and if he thought moving to a real install would be able to do everything he needed, we were supposed to install it last weekend but things came up. Anyway one of the items on his list were file browsing was a lot faster, files were listed almost instantly even in his larger directories (30G of small files in one directory) where as windows would freeze up until everything was done and could fully be displayed several seconds later. Some of the smaller directories would cause slight chugging for some time, during which he was constantly accidental triggering the rename deal because of the chugging. I guess it could be said that if it weren't for windows being a dog on directories with large amounts of files you wouldn't have the problem anyway, but its still an annoyance of one of those regular Joe computer users.

Damn decent of you to decide what I'd like to do with my system. Here I was wanting to play the latest video games without an emulator.. what the hell was *I* thinking...

Games aren't a big one for me, I don't NEED to play video games like some people I know. I would however, enjoy being able to play games natively, other then unreal tournament. I know several people who won't switch from Windows because they don't want to dual-boot or loose the ability to play all there games. One of my friends just got some new game, I'd enjoy being able to fire it up and connect to his server, but alas it does not run in linux.

The part I find the most discuraging is that most games are built with common engines. The unreal engine is an excellent example. It runs more games then I can could count on two hands. Unreal runs in linux as well as a few other games that use the engine. Since the engine is the core of the game and functions in linux, it seems odd that all games that use the engine do not run in linux. Whats really different? The graphic packs, the configuration files the engine reads to set engine parameters, everything else should be handled by the engine that runs in linux. The biggest differences it would see is the way hardware is handled, but this is the job of the engine to take care of and it does a mighty fine job. So why is it again that not all games that use this engine wont run in linux or at least can't be modified to run in linux.

Is a perfect example of control gone bad. The whole feel is so wrong its not funny. It seems as though a game that is so similar to Grand Theft Auto would try to make the control similar feeling, it seems as though they went out of there way to make sure the controls were made to be as far away from GTA as they could get, and I'm not even going to get started on the inability to control your character, let alone drive, with the d-pad.

You play the cop brought from suspension back onto L.A.s Elite Operations Division. You can play the game in two styles, good cop or bad cop. The overall look and feel (other then control) is that of grand theft auto. You have an entire city map able to roam free on in-between and during some missions. You can "commandeer" vehicles, no fugitive effects from this, then run over people as you see fit. This will result in loosing points on your good cop bad cop meter. You can also frisk people, leading to good cop points if they have a weapon or gun, but no loss of points for searching an innocent.

Theres also a deeper story to the game, its just getting started from where I've played up to, but it seems as though your father had simply disapeared years ago after busting up some large ring or something to those effects. I'm on the third episode and am just begining to recive peices of the main plot so im pretty clueless as to why I'm playing right now ;)
