  1. Canadian Culture Minister on P2P Bits · · Score: 2, Informative

The Canadian Culture Minister you're talking about is Hélène Chalifour Scherrer, and she has a bill to make downloading music not legal again. However, we are days away from the Canadian election, and the riding she's in (Louis-Hébert, Quebec) is a tight race according to this site. Make sure you check this site again after the election (June 28th) to see her fate. And for our Canadian slashdot readers, please get out and vote!

MySQL has worked just fine in a lot of cases. Some industrial strength applications may need a PostgreSQL. But whatever makes the most sense should be used.

I'm not sure how healthy the French economy is these days. France (and Germany) have been exceeding the EU's limit of deficit spending which is 3% of GDP. France is at risk of getting sanctions from the EU. In addition, it doesn't look like Europe's education system is fairing too well either, and it's generally agreed that education is required for a healthy economy. This Time article talks about overcrowded classrooms, underfunding, etc, etc.

I'm thinking the decision to move to OSS by France could be a geopolitical strategic move as well. A trade war between the US and the EU is almost certain to come, and it'd be in Europe's best interest to NOT be locked into software vendors from America. We are already seeing signs of the trade war, be it farm subsidies, technology standards (CDMA VS G3) (Galileo VS GPS), and genetically modified foods. In addition, we all know that the American-French relationship has seen better days.

Just because Chirac complimented Bush about American hamburgers (3rd paragraph) at the G8 summit doesn't mean all is well between the two.

PHP tends to be quite good for rapid application development IMO. It also has a very large collection of functions available, so you're not left to implement tedious functions. You also get the benefit of the 90% rule, that is, the syntax is more or less 90% similar or the same to say, C or Java.

I also think your mom would enjoy whipping up simple little web sites. HTML is a nice tool to use to make simple GUIs compared to something like Java swing.
