    you may want to beware as to what rights Microsoft may try to claim over it at a later date
    once software is out under a certain license, it stays under that license... provided you don't upgrade to a new version w/a different license scheme

    a way to ditch the reflective layer entirely and just have a tracking read 'head' above the cd? it would seem to me that instead of reading the reflected spaces of something/not-something you could just read them by seeing what was passing through to the other side of the disc...???
    but then you've got a more complex system with stuff to move on both sides, bigger device, etc. however, do a google search for magneto-optical media, it's used in minidiscs and it uses magnets to read/write info, and a laser fires at the optical part that heats up the magnet on the other side of the media to where it can be written to. under that temp, the magnet can't be changed. lifetime warranty on all discs

    although slackware has the bsd init scripts to make editing a bit easier. but that's only a preference.
    so, to find out the best one for you: try them all or just go for freebsd (no distros)

    i seriously hope you are joking.
    once people see what drm really is, they are going to want to buy some non-restricted hardware. thanks to the capitalist business model (ugh... never thought i'd say that...), people will buy the better product. i'm willing to wager that drm will eventually die out due to lack of customers.

    although i have heard that servers w/drm {hard,soft}ware will only allow machines w/drm to connect.... but there would be enough non-restricted users to ignore the drm people

    when NOTHING will work on any electronic device without a conglomerate corporation's device allowing it to go through
    then save your old hardware. i have an older portable minidisc player/recorder with a mic input. sony took the mic input off its new models because people used them to bootleg.

    resource allocation becomes more flexible as you get more computers. scaling is also easier, say you want only a bit more power to do an extra page, you're not going to buy a multi processor ultra-sparc when a pentium II could do the job.

    what's the big deal with wanting to have linux be the #1 os? is a larger user base worth the effort?
    'cause some people say that linux has to become more "usable" to broaden its user base, and that would change the philosophy a bit
