  1. Re:Nice moral equivalence on Venezuelan Gov't Seeks Internet Content Bill · · Score: 2

There are thousands of companies that will sell you print supplies without fear that they'll face "reeducation through labor" for selling to you. There are dozens of video sharing sites. $200 buys you a Flip or something similar for making your own basic videos.

Just like in 99% of the rest of the world. With one major difference: The US spends in intelligence and military more than the ten next countries combined. And you have more draconian laws than the rest of the world. Sure, you like comparing your country to China, Venezuela or Iraq. Well, compared to most of South America and Europe the US is a police state. I live in Argentina, and you can say all the deranged shit you want about us, most of that shit funded on the lack of information most people in the us have ... most of you think that most of south america looks like juarez city in mexico ... well, it doesn't.

In my country I can say whatever I want, I have free access to the internet, there is a place for independent media on national TV, and unlike the us, we don't allow the religious right to push for creationism on schools, we don't have anti-terrorism laws, we can't be wiretapped without a court order, or arrested without rights by some shadowy agency. And we don't spend most of our budget bombing other countries and funding CIAs, FBIs and DHSs. That is true for most of the world.

I know you have a hard time facing the truth, but most of the world has way more freedom than the states.

That's in my rc.local ... fixes the damn issue. Really, happy-trigger kernel-patching is a bad solution, and goes against the beauty of Unix. You have an extremely powerful operating system, amazingly flexible, where you can do just about everything you need. Use it. Applying a kernel patch to change some userland behavior is the kind of ugly-hack I would expect from microsoft, not from GNU/Linux.

Bullshit. I'm fairly sure that the appstore is illegal. Just think about it:

If Ford prevented you by technical and contractual measures, from installing any accessory in one of their cars that wasn't purchased through Ford's official store, where they only approve a few select brands .... that would be absolutely illegal.

If Sony forced you to use your brand-new TV set with comcast and nothing but comcast, and you had to purchase said service through Sony, that would be fucking illegal too.

So, when Apple forces you to buy software for your brand-new iPad through their store, and they only allow certain vendors, why is that not illegal too?

Years ago we were all against microsoft bundling a browser and a media player in their OS. But now it's ok for Apple to not only bundle their own software, but it's ok too for them to forbid you to install anything not sold by them?

Let them have their appstore, but force them to allow you to configure external repositories legally and easily, even if that voids your warranty. I still wouldn't buy their overpriced, elitist, proprietary crap anyway.

No, that would give each individual government more control over its citizens. Giving them that power would quickly turn the internet everywhere into what it is right now in China.

Governments can't be individually trusted, and localized versions of the internet are a bad idea, against the very definition of the internet.

That's why in the scheme I propose, all countries together are only 30% of the votes. I am a wise-bearded Unix geek, and I still don't agree with turning control over to wise-bearded Unix geeks. We can be real assholes too :). No group of people can be fully trusted to make choices for all of us, that's why we need different groups with different interests to keep each other in line.

The chances that several governments, or several companies, or several software developers cooperate with each other to do something evil are very high. That's why we see things like the ACTA being passed by politicians from different countries, while 90% of the public disagrees.

Now, the chances of seeing the Free Software Fundation, CISCO, the US, Switzerland, Venezuela and the ISC cooperating to pass some terrible legislation is virtually nonexistent.
