Ok then. Do the same for grease food. Put gross pictures of obese people trying to wipe their ass in mcdonald's food packaging, and write "Fast Food causes morbid obesity" in bold black letter all over it. Do the same for alcohol, bacon, cars, detergents, cellphones, soda, chocolate, candy and salt. Everything causes cancer. Being alive is the leading cause of death. Deal with it.
And, based on your argument, let's also ban hiring disabled people, because they have greater health insurance costs too.
Let's not hire Woman either, since they might get pregnant and that means increasing health insurance spending, and maternity days, and sick days for her and her newborn. And getting pregnant is a lifestyle choice, just like smoking, so it's not really discrimination, all they have to do is stop getting pregnant, right?
So, It's illegal to refuse to hire somebody because of sexual orientation, skin color, country or origin, religion, and a bunch of other stuff. But it's ok to discriminate based on after-hours smoke-inhaling? The world is fucking stupid.
Don't get me wrong, I believe any business should be allowed to hire whoever the fuck they want, and discriminate based on anything, even race and other protected characteristics. If you don't wanna hire black people, smokers, or homosexuals, it's up to you. I refuse to hire religious idiots, and it's my fucking right too.
But the government belongs to EVERYBODY, so the government CAN'T engage in such discriminatory activities. And they can't promote it. Blacks, Jews and Woman have acquired equal rights, and are rarely discriminated anymore. Homosexuals are towards that goal. Right now, the single most attacked and discriminated group are smokers. Marijuana users aren't as discriminated against as tobacco smokers. WTF
Shouldn't you ask what I do for a living before assuming it doesn't involve tearing apart unknown devices?
I own a software development company, and a big part of my day is bringing in weird shit from china, tearing it apart, figuring out what it is, how it works, identifying where it came from, going up the chain until I get to the actual manufacturer, then negotiating a bulk price.
I do this with DVR capture cards and external capture devices (our products are linux-based, so I end up tearing apart lots of cards looking for bttv or saa compatible cards), IP Cameras (which don't really offer any documentation), android devices, complete DVRs, digital signage boxes, etc, etc, etc.
So, yeah, it is what I do, and yeah, I'm fucking good at it.
Regarding a tech website, well, not a website, but my company has it's own branded tech space in local TV and local radio, and yes, we are better at it too.
I don't know who this mashable guys are, but they are truly fucking stupid. It took them 10 minutes of staring at what was OBVIOUSLY a fucking smartphone mobo in order to realize that it was one. And they sounded surprised!. Hey, you said it was playing video and receiving tweets, so what the hell did they expect it to be, a vacuum cleaner? They also looked at what was clearly a phone camera, missing the lens and with the CCD exposed, and they where like "is that a CCD, I think it looks like a CCD. Dude, you've got something shaped like an smartphone motherboard, with a smartphone battery, a smartphone LCD, a SIM card, and a USB port, and you wonder about what it is? The funniest part is that the article introduces them as "The technical wizards at Mashable". WTF.
This is one area where we are not given enough credit, but the Internet as we know is here thanks to Free Software.
Sure, most people doesn't realize this, and of those that do, most won't accept it, but it's still the truth. What allowed the internet to grow so big? Do you think Google would exist if they had to pay an expensive Unix license for every machine they own? Sure, they might be able to afford it now, but they didn't years ago, and they would have never gotten this far. Even now it would be a huge hit on their wallet. Take the Internet as it exists right now. Remove GNU/Linux and *BSD, Bind, Apache, SSH, MySQL/PostgreSQL, PHP, Perl, Python, nginx, squid, rsync. I can go on and on. Now remove 90% of all web apps out there. Remove Wordpress, Joomla, and just about every other CMS. Now take the client side. Remove KHTML (And with that webkit, and therefore Safari and Chrome), remove Firefox. Remove Android. What are we left with? I think if you remove all Free Software from the Internet, aside from the fact that there would be no root DNS servers and most of the routers would be down, and what servers are still intact? microsoft.com? I'm pretty sure even they relay on Free Software.
So, Fuck off ITIF. It's not advertisement. Many people think content should be pay for, that content couldn't exist without advertisement, well, you are using the most advanced infrastructure ever created to create and serve your content, and the infrastructure was created for free. Certainly we can create some GPL'd cat pictures, porn and tech articles to replace your stupid content. Please go away.
All the pro-advertisement self-entitled idiots are using trillions of dollars of infrastructure the community created for free, and they go "But our dong jokes are priceless. We need money!". Well fuck you.
It is weird. It's not my security police. If it where up to me, I would happily use DDNS. My customers perceive IPs changing every 24hs and authentication to get the new IP as good security. I don't agree, but then again, how often do people in IT agree with customers?
I absolutely agree with you. This are distributed CCTV systems for several customers. They are supposed to be able to access them anywhere, on any computer with a browser, any OS, without installing anything. They don't want DDNS because that would permanently expose their IPs. Instead, they use a web service that redirects them to the right IP. Their IPs change every 24hs.
Of course that's not security. The systems are all very secure anyway, all they expose is a very well proven web service. Childishly hiding your IP address is not security. But that's what they want. Go and convince them, then I'll happily switch.
You completely missed my point. I want IPv6. I know the feature-set, and I've already implemented several IPv6-ready networks. I know we need it, and I know changing will be for the best.
But I can't stop feeling that the long addresses are gonna suck.
It's like when you decide to move to a big city, and you know it's gonna rock in so many ways, but you are still gonna miss that little shithole of a town, even when you know you have no future there.
It's not a technical argument against IPv6, it's nostalgia.
read my other post. Most of these systems are behind NAT on connections that have dynamic ip addresses. I can't use ddns because of security policies. I do maintain a DB of hosts, and there's a script in every machine that auto-updates the server. I also have scripts that combined with shell expansion allow me to ssh root@`gethost customer_id server_id`. Right now there are 498 active entries in that table. I can watch a log and easily identify one IP from the other. Try doing that with IPv6. Try tcpdumping something, and quickly identify machines as they go by your log. Now try doing that in IPv6. Fuck those extra 96bits.
mysql> select count(host) from systems; | count(host) |
498 | 1 row in set (0.00 sec)
(stupid slashdot thinks mysql's output are junk characters)
Since most of those 498 servers I manage are behind NAT and have dynamic public IPs, I do have a system to track them (not ddns, but a homemade solution), and I have scripts in place that allow me to get any server's IP. Combine that with shell expansion and I can ssh root@`gethost customer_id server_id` and similar stuff. That doesn't mean you don't have to deal with IP addresses anyway, and it doesn't mean doing ifconfig eth0 2001:0db8:85a3:0042:0000:8a2e:0370:7334 is gonna be easy. Imagine debugging a routing table! Imagine reading the output of tcpdump with such meaningless addresses. IPv6 is gonna be a PITA.
I know IPv6 is needed, and it'll be great having disposable addresses to throw at any device. I'll be certainly happy to get rid of NAT in many circumstances, but OTOH, IPv6 is going to suck. I have tens of IPs in my head, which I access daily by memory. IPv4 addresses are easy to remember, easy to pass over the phone, easy to type, and easy to operate (i.e, calculate things such as masks in your head, etc). IPv6 is going to make it way harder, and that's not taking into account he migration process...
Android is NOT an operating system. GNU/Linux is an operating system. Android is a heavily customized GNU/Linux distribution that includes a java-based GUI and SDK. Android is Free Software. Google is the Android maintainer and main developer, and it decides to help certain manufacturers to achieve better results with their android-based devices. Google gets to choose in what companies it wants to invest its time and money. If Microsoft wanted to release an Android phone, Google would most likely say no, since microsoft works on a competing mobile platform, and therefore would not make a very good partner. Same goes for Acer/Alibaba if they want to compete.
Also, now that we have Android's definition clear, let's define Aliyun: It's certainly NOT an operating system. It's just a fork of Android. So, Aliyun is to Android what Linux Mint is to Ubuntu. If the Linux mint guys asked Canonical to help them out build their distro, would it be wrong for Canonical to refuse? Are they obliged to help them? Now, trying to close the code, or suing them, would be another thing. But telling them "You don't get to be part of our club and we won't invest time and money in your project because it's not compatible with our goals" is certainly not unethical or wrong in any way whatsoever.
I was working remotely as a sysadmin for a small US telco. Back then 3G coverage wasn't great, but it was there. I traveled constantly, and worked from my laptop. Sometimes, I just cheated a bit with presence on my phone (IM Client), when bringing my laptop somewhere wasn't an option. I didn't go for driving though, I took planes, trains, buses, boats, and every other form of public transportation available. I stayed in cheap hotels. That went on for ~2 years. I had the time of my life, and my employer at the time never noticed I left my house. Go for it, but take into account if you go for the RV, driving is a full time job in itself, and you can't drive and code (or whatever it is you do). You will travel far less than you might expect. Cheap hotels and public transportation, OTOH, allow you to fall asleep at night on a plane, and magically wake up the next in a completely different place. You get used to sleeping on the go. I'd say go for it.
Well, I usually look for small objects they might accidentally swallow, open windows, sharp things, etc. and remove them from the office before I interview them. You don't want their family suing you, right?
Also, you should setup a work environment suitable for them. Something like this http://tinyurl.com/8dk6k7f will work fine, but if you will leave them unsupervised for extended periods of time, you might want to look into something like this http://tinyurl.com/9lnp7dn, to ensure everyone's safety.
That is preposterous. You are implying that a VPN is more secure than SSH... and considering the best way to setup a vpn-like environment is to tunnel it over SSH, your argument is obviously invalid. Pay attention: SSH is the most secure service to have ever existed, and statistics are on my side. If you want to avoid all the unwanted traffic from scripts testing default passwords, switch ssh to another port.
BTW: VPNs suck. If your setup requires a VPN, then it's time to rethink your architecture.
Except circumcision reduces pleasure during sex. It's a stupid religious practice, that people justify as meaning to reduce infection, but it's actually targeted at reducing pleasure and masturbation (I've heard it fails drastically at that). I live in Argentina. Do you know what babies get circumcisions here? None. Well, just the jews, and not all of them, only the actually religious.
It's an awful and stupid religious practice, and should be BANNED. Parents that do it should be punished with actual jail time. Let the kid decide if he wants to mutilate himself when he turns 18. Same should go for religion (no sex before 18? Fine. No voting? Fine. No religious teaching until 18 years old. Also, punishable with mandatory jail time).
In case it wasn't clear enough, KEEP YOUR FUCKING RELIGION AWAY FROM MY PENIS.
Editors? Where have you read that we have edit... wait, damn!
Sorry, that was a mistake. We meant to say this site is run by redditors. We hired an entire team of them. We couldn't get slashcode to actually autosubmit the stories, since our coders are lazy, so we needed some cheap labor to do it. The cheapest we could find was redditors. So essentially we pay them a (very small) salary to go on reddit all day long, taking small breaks to log into/.'s admin panel and randomly approve stories. We are currently teaching very basic english to a group of illegal Mexicans. As soon as they are at the level of our current editors (that is, speaking a grand total of 25 words), we'll replace them, and you'll immediately see a noticeable improvement in the quality of our stories.
So, redditors, sorry for the inconvenience. We just asked our redditors to correct the mistake in our FAQ and change editors to redditors, but they flipped us the bird and went back to/r/gonewild. You'll just have to wait until we get our mexicans ready.

I ain't gonna use DDNS.
I actually do this with MAC addresses.
For instance, at the Costa Galana Hotel each CCTV DVR has a MAc like this: C0:57:A6:A1:AE:09 (That's COSTAGALA, and E09 stands for Equipo 09)
You completely missed my point. I want IPv6. I know the feature-set, and I've already implemented several IPv6-ready networks. I know we need it, and I know changing will be for the best.

Just four days after graduating from high school he began his career in Christian music and has since appeared in a number of singing groups.
