Well of course the MAIN reason it is interesting is because it can support the argument that life may/have existed on Mars. However even if you aren't into that, water can be used as a power source which would make Mars much more inhabitable for humans in the future. But honestly, people only care about the question of life, not water, existing on Mars.

Um, search harder then creating operating systems for desktops, servers, cell phones and embedded devices? Somehow I don't think so.

Search is easy and all it takes is for someone to come in and take mindshare away. Before Google, everyone used to talk about Yahoo and they were "it" for search. Its very easy for the user to switch and for well funded competitors to enter in the market, so to say the "search engine business is formed" is particularly idiotic.

Oh and BTW, if you count all of Microsoft's web properties they are #1 in visitors (by a long shot!), and MSN search is #3.

Um, yeah, sorry. They aren't changing TCP/IP. They are just adding API features to the stack and better v6 support. Hate to break it to ya, but modern TCP/IP stacks are not just code copied from a BSD. They have been added to and portions have been rewritten.

Heres an example of some of the features they added:

-Reconfigure without having to restart the computer
-New support for scaling on multi-processor computers
    -Easier kernel mode network programming

There is nothing in the article that suggests changes/enhancements to the protocol itself.

There are plenty of "free" alternatives for email/database/etc on Windows as well. In case you don't know, much OSS runs on Windows. OSS doesn't just run on Linux.
Microsoft has already introduced lower cost versions of Windows/Office to compete in price sensistive markets.

Oh and BTW: the wireless AP makers (like Linksys) have already dumped Linux for a proprietary OS (VxWorks).

Of course, jealousy because "M$" made tens of thousands of regular engineers multi-millionaires is quite common around here. Which would you rather invest in? Hint, AAPL is the red line and MSFT is the blue line (the one with 600,000% growth at the peak). Those little triangles are stock splits. Se the real numbers are 200,000% growth for MSFT and about 200% growth for AAPL.
