Actually the MSN division is profitable as well, and the Home and Entertainment divsion (including the XBox) also turns a profit some quarters.
McDonalds also "lost" huge amounts of profitability when it was rolling out its new mexican food franchises. It is called "investment" and sometimes investments take years of losses to make back profits.
Um, Microsoft owns most of the PDA market now (70%) and they are making large inroads in the cellphone market too. They also are the number 2 console maker in the world (unseated Nintendo a while ago). In case you guys missed it, MS has a lot of experience in both the game and mobile markets.
Google's engines go through your deleted email too in order to more effectively target you with advertisements. Google wants to know everything about you, and deleted mail is just as interesting as undeleted mail.
Do you leftists ever stop and think how you look to other people? If you haven't: you look exactly like tomstdenis. Angry, irrational, and on the wrong side of pretty much everything.
Exactly! I cannot believe that the OSX community is glossing over this. A local user should NOT be able to elevate their privs via a hack. Plenty of headless servers run SSH, how else would you manage a remote OSX server?
OSS would get it right cause there would be millions of eyeballs looking at the code and many more coders than Diebold! OSS always produces superior solutions.
No, Microsofts Virtual Earth has an API too - and its API is a damn sight better than Googles. Virtual Earths API is much more flexible and works in multiple browsers without resorting to hacks. Google has trouble with IE.

This can't be true. I've been out of work for two years now! I even have Redhat certs and have been using Slakware for many years. I was forced to move back home last year. Maybe it would help to get a MCSE?
After a little bit of Googling I found out that the "reviewer" actually works at publishers of the authors book! I'm sure the book just "arrived at his doorstep" - he probably has hundreds of copies sitting in his warehouse.
Toofast, if you (or anyone) would like to donate to me such a setup I would be happy to reperform the benchmarks and share them with the community. I was only able to test with the equipment I had on hand. Just drop me an email.
Yes you are allowed to declare bankruptcy. This typically happens after awards like this and there is usually a negotiated settlement.
Unfortunately the net effect of this will probably be a change in the law, since the courts will see a $11+ billion settlement as a mockery of the court system.
So I wonder if this new model of the XBox360 with the HD-DVD will be more expensive than the current 360? Its already $499 for the non-core model I believe.
For existing users, this really sucks as I would think you would want your DVD player integrated into the unit, rather than having yet another external add-on.
It happened about the same time companies started to give unrestricted stock options to the top executives. They can make huge amounts of money in very short periods of time. Take a look at Redhats CEO: he sold over $120 million in unrestricted options in shortly after the IPO. I'm not saying that RHAT's executive staff is doing anything fishy, but the incentive is sure there to boost the short term stock price.
Fines are not enough and hurt shareholders more than those who are responsible: the executives. The true punishment should be fines and jail time for the COO, CFO, CEO and all the other Cx0's. What does fining a company do except bleed the shareholders?
From the review: "Lastly, despite the book's title emphasizing C#, there are 130 or so pages on ASP.NET and XML web services"
I'm not sure how you can fault me for including coverage of ASP.NET and other.NET technologies - the title of the book points out that it covers BOTH C# and.NET 2.0. There is no special emphasis on C#.
Um, explain then how the majority of innovations come from countries with high protection for IP (including patents) and countries with poor protection produce virtually none? I know slashbots don't believe this, but without patent (and other IP) protection you would see the pace of innovation slow tremendously.
Also, the force of law can certainly protect inventions: this has been proven time and time again. Go try and produce a product based on existing patents - you will see the force of law.
Additionally, you certainly can improve on existing creations, you just need to recompense the originally inventor if required. I do not argue that the existing patent system is working correctly, but the idea of strong IP protection is something that everyone should support.
Um, to compare someone who has a cushy job at MICROSOFT versus someone who has survived a major hurricane is, um, rather incredible actually. It just goes to show you how out of touch you are with the real world. Get a grip, you have a comfortable job in one of the largest tech companies in the world, your house is not floating away.
The contractors at Microsoft seem to be the biggest whiners I have seen in the IT industry. *Whine* they dont treat us the same, the put a hyphen in our email address so everyone knows we are contractors *Whine*.
Guess what? No one cares. Some people don't have jobs, period - especially cushy IT jobs at a stable mega-corporation.
...its a whole new paradigm!!! :-)
This is Slashdot. What do you think?
In case anyone else was wondering, RICO is the name of the act that is the basis for the lawsuit. See http://www.ricoact.com/ for more information.

Trip, why can't you be a nice person? And how idiotic are you to actually PAY FOR A SUBSCRIPTION to Slashdot???

Will someone please define what a "mashup" is now? It seems to be the word du jour in the Web 2.0 crowd.

Sony says it is going to be better? Well then, it must be true! After all they sure didn't overpromise on the PS2 with its Toy Story quality graphics.

The $1,500,000,000 they are making in CASH PROFIT (not revenue) per month?
