Personally, I use Linux most of all, but I don't want binary blobs for my drivers if I can avoid them, and I'll generally replace the hardware rather than muck with ndiswrapper.
an excellent point. i wish more people would *research* and buy *supported* hardware, instead of whining that "they would run <insert oss os here>, but it doesn't support <POS hardware> they just bought".
...linux supports thousands of other devices that BSDs doesn't support.
very good. we need opensource supporting all sorts of hardware. only this discussion is in regards to WiFi support.
Linux developers are just as interested in getting opensource drivers just as the next guy. We're all in the same ship.
i don't see where the flame is. the OpenBSD folks want open unencumbered drivers (hence the 3.9 blob theme) while the Linux folks have NDIS wrappers, blobs and other such hacks. it's fact. no need to get melodramatic over anything.
and they showed us that they can deliver while sticking to their goals and principles
The software you want is just a pkg_add away (not qmail unfortunately).
you're probably referring to the ACCEPTABLE_LICENSES+=djb-nonlicense your mk.conf when building from source. however, Q106 packages (even further back to Q105) include qmail binaries.
"Please, stop pointing out that while we brag about how much we love open source software, most of our exciting free applications are only available for Windows!"
isn't it logical to start on the most popular platform and if it pans out, expand?
brag or no brag, they put their money/code where their mouth is (code/SoC/OpenBSD)
Google is the kid in high school who is smart (but not exceptionally so), works *very* hard to maintain 4.0 GPA and also sucks up to his teachers all the time. However, he gets very secretive and passive-aggressive when you point out his imperfections.
looks to me that they always shut the fuck up and do their job. and churn out nifty products all the time. i guess that's what people don't like -- i mean, what kinda company are they if they don't toot their own horn all the time and fail to deliver? something must be rotten!
You've probably never heard of ETAP but it's one of the best programs for circuit analysis in utilities.
how can you compare a program that works with something so many people come in contact with (spyware) with a program that works with something so very *few* people come in contact with (circuit analysis)?
So **PLEASE** no more comments like "If Tanenbaum thinks microkernels are so great, why doesn't he write an OS based on one?" He did.
i don't reall know what you mean by proof of concept
again, FTFA:
It is definitely not as complete or mature as Linux or BSD yet, but it clearly demonstrates that implementing a reliable, self-healing, multiserver UNIX clone in user space based on a small, easy-to-understand microkernel is doable. Don't confuse lack of maturity (we've only been at it for a bit over a year with three people) with issues relating to microkernels.
i know this is slashdot, and RTFA is some kind of mortal sin, but please at least try.
I have friends that run Linux because they don't have the money to buy Windows. They certainly don't have the money for broadband access. The kernel download is now impossible for them.
i'm sorry if i'm being blunt, but get the fuck outta here. the latest 2.6 kernel (as of this writing) is ~39MB. that means you can get it in ~7h at 14k and ~2h at 56k. you can surely leave a wget running while you sleep or you're away from home.
when i was on dialup my monthly traffic was in the multiple gigs, so you'll really have to come up with a better excuse.
my point was that the consequences of warezing and speeding are (might be) totally different. but he will get hiswish pretty soon.
as i see it warezing is in the same ballpark as shoplifting, if you *really want* to make a crime out of it. not genocide, or whatever the fuck ??AA would like you to believe.
Unfortunately for you, what you believe doesn't matter.
fortunately for us, you don't make the laws
"I'm sorry, officer. I don't believe that the speed limit should only be 45 on this road. I'm far enough away from the urban area, aren't I?"
truly insightful. i'm sure him downloading ROMs is the same as going over the speed limit, crashing into a gas station and blowing away a good chunk of road.
Why not just use xine and be done with it? From what I've seen, xine does everything that mplayer does, and more, so why bother.
is xine relevant? why not just use mplayer and be done with it? from what everyone knows as a fact (not just what i've seen), mplayer does everything that xine does, and more (like works properly on windows since forever, plays *everything*, comes with an awesome encoder), so why bother?
i really love these type of questions. nobody is forcing you to use mplayer. if you love xine that much then use it happily and stop belittling other players (especially the ones that exceed it in functionality, such as this case).

there, i fixed that for you
the binary packages you install with pkg_add

postfix has been included for quite some time now. i s'pose it'll default to that in the next releases.
yeah and you know whats even funnier (in a sad clown way)? that this FreeNAS thing is built around FreeBSD. now wheres my LART...
bullshit. i've got an old sff as a server and ipaq as a workstation -- very small, can't hear them, draw ~30W each.
a P3 is ludicrously underpowered? since fucking when, if i may be so inquisitive?

tell that to Uzi Nissan

your `top selling' argument might have some validity to it, but i still think more people know about spybot/ad-aware
Lenovo bought the US?
you mean like Tanenbaum (slashdotted, try later) did?

these analogies... please stop.
today's word: "sarchasm: the gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn't get it"
you gotta love irony. it's so... ironic.
perhaps he should have used the <sarcasm> tag
