  1. Industry not resources on $1 Trillion In Minerals Found In Afghanistan · · Score: 1

What might really make the difference here is if they can build industry to work with the minerals they extract from the ground. In general, and this has been already worked over far better by others before me, resources alone are a curse. It is the investment in their use that might make the difference. If there is really $1T to be made out of extracting these raw materials then perhaps the US/UN/whoever would do very well to help educate and train the locals in how to turn these into industry, in the long run you need a country that can stand on its own feet and provide a living to its people. Personally, do I think that the world has the guts to rise to this challenge, I doubt it - I want to be wrong, but I think that we (the rest of the civilised world) will just ignore this and go for the quick buck again. The reason that Asia is taking the lion share of the economy these days is because the US and Europe have lost sight of this simple fact.

  3. Green Tech? on New Phoenix BIOS Starts Windows 7 Boot In 1 Second · · Score: 1

This is really good news for those of us who simply close the lid on the laptop at night. I do this (shutdown times aside) simply because I want it to start up quickly in the morning. This bleeds more out of my battery than shutting down properly (at least on my laptop). And as others note there is simply no reason why any other OS could not benefit from this too.

  4. Stop the Rot First on Digital Storage To Survive a 25-Year Dirt Nap? · · Score: 1

The biggest problem with time capsules is moisture - see if you can get a bit of a vacuum going before you seal it up. Add some silica desiccant gel and at least there will be something that has not rotted inside your box.

FWIW A CD will probably be you best bet, there are bound to be CD compatible devices around for decades and if you chose a nice popular format for the pictures you should find yourself up and running easily.

  5. Re:Serious issue! on What To Do With All of My Gadget Chargers? · · Score: 1

USB is best if a standard can be agreed at the moment it is likely you need stupid drivers to make them work (like the blackberry needing desktop manager or pocketmac). Also the standards will need to be adopted by Apple as well as Microsoft otherwise they are useless (we all know Linux will have a package for it after not too long a delay).

  6. Do Both on Surviving Outsourcing? · · Score: 1

It will not harm you to have your CV up to date for your new outsourced company, as well as for any potential new jobs.
Having been through the outsourcing process a couple of times, I can say that it often favours those outsourced rather than those who are left. Since those staying with the parent company have to deal with many who were once colleagues through a layer of SLAs and Relationship Managers. Whereas those going often find themselves in a greater world with a nice new company on the CV to boot.
As ever life is what you make of it - it might just be as well to find out what the new place is like and get some new experiences before moving on!

  7. Re:What are you smoking? on IBM's Inexpensive Notes/Domino Push Against MS · · Score: 1

For an enterprise at least there are no alternatives, or at least none that are a such combined platform on the horizon. For many the cost is not the license but the cost of operation (user/group data management etc). I am no MS lover, but I do have to say the product is *much* better than Notes (which to say the least is a joke and a time waster) - even as an end user I am not sure how many more times I can bear to be told in a popup that I cannot close the application because there is a popup open which on closing opens up a new popup saying the same thing!
Depending on how you view your time then having some bloat in the right places (i.e. having one place for email and colaboration) is a good thing.

  8. Do you have a goal? on For CS Majors, How Important Is the "Where?" · · Score: 1

The where is very important depending on the job you see yourself in after - if you have thought that far ahead. For example there are some places that would align themselves with the Financial Services industry and are on the "milk round" for jobs by the big players in that sector, whereas others would be more interesting if you plan to move into media for example. Do some reading up on your choices if you are already planning a possible career! In spite of previous comments it really can matter for many years where you were for your higher education.
If you are just going so you can chill out for a couple of years (and goodness knows there are days when I wish I had) - pick the one with the best social atmosphere!

  9. Much use? on UK's MI5 Wants Oyster Card Travel Data · · Score: 1

A couple of things spring to mind:
Even a not so well funded terrorist can still by a paper ticket (although at Mr. Livingstone's prices maybe they would need good funding).
I can get a pay-as-you-go oyster and pay for it with cash.
While I am sure that this might provide useful information it would also be so easy to mislead - say substitute your oyster card for someone else's and let them develop a pattern of innocent travel for you while you frame them etc...
So although it might generate a lead it would not be enough on its own to stand up in court (if we still used them for terror suspects in the UK), but have no fear we can still fall back to trust cctv.
I am guessing that winning hearts and minds is a better strategy rather than letting this ever more pervasive invasion of our privacy continue!

  10. fiasco on UK Government Loses 15 Million Private Records · · Score: 0, Offtopic

Have your say: I love this comment: "Will they guarantee any losses to people through fraud? They guarantee other risky ventures." Which of course refers to the British Government guarantees to Northern Rock.
Certainly ID cards, which this government pushes with all its might, would have done nothing here since it was not 25m individuals sending they data insecurely but 1 individual with a database and a stamp!

  11. Re:TV execs don't have a clue on Futurama to be Resurrected? · · Score: 1

I am unsure about things like this. Look at something like Fawlty Towers or The Office for example these were "cancelled" (in so much as that the writers - who were also the stars - ended them even though I am am sure that the networks would still have commissioned more) at just the right time and now are such classics in many ways because each show was perfect and ended leaving the audience wanting more. On the other hand Groening has a unique talent at keeping a show fresh. I still find it easy to laugh at The Simpsons which has never really fallen into a rut.

  12. Firstly... on After College, What Type of Jobs Should One Seek? · · Score: 1

Is Computing the career you want. If you have been on a good course then you have had some placement experience and have decided that you want a career in industry and not further education.
If this is the case then you need to decide the industry. Are you a system admin, in the win-world or *NIX? Are you a system programmer, do you like the idea of banking or maybe you feel that you would like to work in a F1 team.
You need to decide whether you are ready for work. Most likely you are a good programmer with a Master's degree, most likely you can pick and choose a job - the single most important thing is to get a job with a company you are happy with. It can take time to get the right position but if you are motivated and know what part of computing you want to work in, it is likely you will get it.
If you are not ready for work then take some time out. This will do you the world of good. Get to see some of the world, as this will help you for the rest of your like.
In the experience I have in employing graduates, I find that there are people who are ready for work and those that are not. Those that are not might work for a short period of time but in the end they always move on.

  13. Re:dirac vs. theora? on BBC Wants Help With Dirac Codec · · Score: 1

The BBC is funded by their own license which everyone in Britain is obliged to pay if they own a TV or Radio. This is not the same as being funded by government, thank goodness!
That said I am pleased that they continue to push the frontiers of broadcasting technology. They, after all, have one of the best websites on the net and also provide it with a rich content that is no matched anywhere as far as I can see. They have a history of innovation and being the first to display new shiney things to the world.
That they are staying ahead and leading in new ways of distributing their media should, if anything, encourage those of us who believe in the cutting edge being pushed further forward helping if we are capable. Good luck to them and more power to them for it.
