    Hey dumbass... I was not attempting to say that ultraedit's replacement of notepad doesn't work. I was just talking about how my simple "rename" statements should work and was surprised that Windows was replacing it. Relax

    Microsoft somehow automagically restores the notepad.exe file!!!!

    It's an unfortunate consequence of life - some people scam, and sometimes the scammed party wants to keep the details silent (having been sexually abused, its the same deal - you feel (wrongly) stupid for being the victim, although with the university, alot more than my pride is involved .. ie, lots of money and reputations).

    Pardon me, but this seems to trivialize sexual abuse a bit too much

    So, does this mean that every 14 year old AC is going to post articles like "DON'T USE OPENGL!!! MICRO$OFT OWNZ IT!" and "DON'T SUPPORT PATENTED GRAPHIC LIBRARIES!!" and "SAVE THE WHALES! (At least the ones that don't use OpenGL...)"
    Frankly, from a pure business perspective, it is a great coup for Microsoft. They can quash yet another competetive product legally with no threat of anti-trust attention. After all, a patent is a patent... no doubts.

    The day my friends came over for a party and pulled The Color of Her Panties off my shelf and started taunting me (it still hasn't stopped and its 8 years later), is the day I stopped reading the Xanth novels. It didn't help that there was a little girl of about 7 years old with plaid panties on the cover!

    My Question: Can you continue to write novels so that nerds can read them without the title causing them to get their asses kicked more than already happens?

    Basic Economics. I couldn't afford to be my own contractor. Say, if you make $100/hour, you can't handle pissing away all that lost billing time to make sure that the plumber shows up on the right day and installs things properly. All those hours supervising adds up to a big total.


    I had a truly custom house built recently and stopped by almost every day after work. With all the decisions I had to make, I can't imagine how much more effort it would have been to have to manage the subs and all the other stuff.

    the proprietary functionality would be the API to interface with the theoretical Microsoft MP3 device, which Microsoft would not publish. I am not aware of Apple posting documents publishing their interface to the iPod either.

    Good point. This is exactly why I can never figure out why they impede the acceptance of their add-on products by making them Apple-only. It takes 100% of the market and pares it down to 5%... Doesn't seem like a good marketting strategy to me (though, I don't have all the internal knowledge obviously)

    Nothing at all prevents you from installing RealPlayer, MusicMatch Jukebox, Netscape, Opera or any other competitors product. They all work well (I have used them all).
    Microsoft chooses to use their own product (IE) in its own software. Where's the problem with that?
    If I were to implement my Help system as HTML and wanted to use a browser for it, why not require the usage of one that guarantees that your help files are renderred as expected? I know that I, for one, would prefer to avoid the tech support nightmare of supporting every browser on the planet for my help files (just one instance..).

    Of course, I actually use business reasoning instead of religion to dictate my decision making.

    Yeah, but then people in this same forum would jump all over Microsoft for making new proprietary, integrated functionality that "should be open for competition". People would cry "anti-competitive practices" until they break up the company for making a good product. Apple is doing _exactly_ that for which Microsoft is being roasted alive.
