False. The afrementioned Mr. Yankovic takes great pains to get permission from the artist for his parodies. The only case where he didn't was for Coolio's "Gangsta Paradise" — and in that case, Weird Al's mistake was in taking the label's word that they had received Coolio's permission.

I sure hope that when someone does that it becomes a story on SLashdot. Of course then, I'd probably have to respond to someone too dense to Read The Fucking Title.

No -- I base my opinion that his appeal was bullshit because the (mostly Republican) appelate court said that the trial run by the (Republican) judge was run properly, denying his appeal that argued otherwise. They did not deny him the right to further appeal, but based on the unlikelihood of that appeal succeeding that he must surrender to the court and await the outcome of that further appeal in jail. In short, they thought a further appeal would be bullshit.

Convert my files - I ripped my entire CD collection I own into WMP. iTunes won't touch any of those songs or play them because they are WMA's with DRM. Other players will play them just fine. Our two MP3 players play them just fine. iTunes is demanding that I convert 20 gigs of music to suit its whims. That is bullshit, but rather a cold-hard fact. So much for "it just works" when it fails to serve the primary purpose, playing my music.

Waitasec, you ripped your CDs int oa format with DRM? Sorry, I didn't realize you were so, well, stupid. (Sorry, but it had to be said.) Do yourself a favor and rerip it in any format you can without DRM. Since you have two mp3 player, I would suggest mp3.

Now, as to iTunes going through your computer and gathering up your music: don't blame iTunes. It asked if you wanted it to scan your computer for music, and you said yes. Irrelevant anyway, since you ripped it all in WMA. With DRM! Jeezus, do you even READ Slashdot?

And just to assuage your fears, yes iTUnes has CD burning built in. That is assuming you aren't stupid enough to rip in WMA WITH FUCKING DRM. Christ on a cracker, man.

And before you ask, iTunes does NOT rip CDs in a format with DRM. The only tracks in an iTunes library with DRM are the ones you buy in the iTunes Store. Which I would suggest that you never do, because you're the type of person who RIPS HIS OWN CDS WITH DRM. Just, and i mean with this with all of the sympathy in the world, but FUCK, MAN. Actually, the judge wanted Libby to go to jail NOW because he was convicted. The only reason he didn't go to jail immediately was his bullshit appeal, which we denied. Oh and, by the way, Libby's trial judge was appointed by Bush, and two of the three judges on the appeal board were appointed by Republicans. The only impact that the Democrats have had in all of this is talk, which seems to be all they're good for these days anyway.

  17. Re:Not troll, I swear on AT&T Vs. Apple Store At the iPhone Launch · · Score: 1

    For the record:

I stood in line for two hours. The difference between standing in line and not standing in line was getting to talk to other like-minded people.

My family lives 1000 miles away; so I spend time with them by using a (wait for it) cellphone. I don't have a job yet, as we moved here a few months ago because the "wife" got a better job. As for her and our friends, they were all at work. Which is why I had TWO WHOLE HOURS OF FREE TIME to stand in line.

As for phones being "no-nonsense", all I ask is that a phone make calls AND sync with my computer, so I don't have to spend more time than I did in line typing in all of my numbers. Of the last three phones I have had, only one has been able to do that, and I've had it for three days.

So why did I waste perfectly good time standing in line? So that the "wife" could have an iPhone to take with her on her business trips instead of lugging her camera and laptop with her, and now she can email me from anywhere, save while on the plane. I got it for her on Friday so that she would have the whole weekend to have it set up before work on Monday. The fact that it took fifteen minutes was a pleasant surprise; meanwhile, I'm still trying to figure out the shortest menu navigation on my phone to check voicemail (I'd like to keep it under five, but who knows.) And, as a bonus we're with the same cell company now, so we save money overall.

So let's see: I spent two hours in line talkng to friendly strangers to get a phone to make life easier for the woman I love. Wow, I AM a selfish, time-wasting, family-hating prick. Thank you, kind sir, for freely giving your informed judgements about other people's lives.

  18. Re:Not troll, I swear on AT&T Vs. Apple Store At the iPhone Launch · · Score: 3, Interesting

No, it's not crazy. Why did I (and thousands of others) stand line up for hours? If you would like a hint, pick up an iPhone and try to exploit its advertised features. Now pick up an unfamiliar cellphone and try to exploit its features. The amount of time I spent in line is dwarfed by the amount of time I spend trying to learn how to use a fraction of the advertised features of whatever cellphone a plan offers me. That's assuming, of course, that the usefulness of the cellphone hasn't been hampered by the provider itself.

So, unless you prefer dumping hours of your precious life down the tubes reading a poorly-written manual to learn (or, morel likely, not learn) a crappily-designed UI, it should seem quite normal. Life is too short to memorize arbitrary menu navigation.

That's an interesting perspective. It's a perspective that only suffers from one tiny flaw: AT&T were not activating iPhones in the stores. Anywhere. Every one had to do so through iTunes. So the only activation problems the AT&T monkeys had to deal with were the ones produced by incompetence up the food chain. In a word: corporate.

So, do you see the lack of difference now? Your comment is pure crap.

Oh noes!! Please don't withhold the RAZR2 from us!! Our customers will die -- all three of them!!

Well OK, the RAZR sold more than three units. I assume. Anyway, the curent economic model between the cellphone manufacturers and service providers sucks. It leads to stupid shit like feature-blocking. I want my cellphone provider to provide service. And usable information about that service. My cable company didn't sell me a TV. My ISV didn't sell me my computer (and if they did I'll bet it wouldn't be one that I wanted.) Sure, I wish the iPhone was usable with all carriers, but it isn't. Yet. One step at a time.

Oh, and P.S. When the RAZR came out it cost $500 as well WITH a service agreement; $800 without. Just saying.
