Haha! i know you said that as a joke, but i suspect it will look good on OS X too (especially if you have a flat screen, it seems too look better on a high contrast flatscreen)
People have seen that as my wallpaper, and simply go "wow"!
Plus there is also some space to place your desktop icons..
Yes, this is fair. Firefox is an implementation of Gecko, and has been branded my Mozilla org. However, you can download and compile yoru own verion, you just cannot call it Firefox, you have to rename it somethign else (waterfowl, for example).
Personally I think thats fair enough. The last thing i want is some unscrupulous types (eg SCO, russian spammers, spyware developers) makign a "special" version of Firefox and distributing it as the "real thing" + a few hidden extras. By copyrighting and securing the brand and logo, it gives Mozilla.org legal teeth to stop them.
However, it doesnt make it less open, since you ARE able to make your own version. Nor does it make your version nessasarily any "less", since shoudl the Mozilla official version tank, your version can possibilly take control (code fork)
BTW, The logo ROCKS, i have downloaded the wallpaper, and it looks absolutely STUNNING on my Dell 17" Flat Panel display at 1280x1024!
The Mozilla suite was NOT intended for "end user use". If anythign it was designed as a showcase of what the Gecko engine can do, as well as a demonstration of many of the Mozilla technologies. The fact that it is a usefull suite of tools is a side effect.
Firefox is the prefered end user product, and is FAST, and pretty much unbloated. Its even faster under Linux, which was a damn surprise for me.
Drinking alcohol woudl make you do things that you wouldnt normally do. Right now you are saying that you wont drink and drive. Is that the view you will hold ten pints later?
I didnt mention in it the earlier reply, but this is the exact problem that happened tin that case, the driver was a generally law abiding citizen and intrestingly was against drink driving. That day his judgement was clouded by the drink, and he thought he was able to drive when he clearly could not. This divice would have warned him that he is not fit to drive, and maybe, my friend's girlfriend would be alive today.
My friends girlfriend died from a crazy nut driving a car whilst drunk. My friend still hasnt gotten over it.
Laws are simply not working enough, The UK has some of the most draconian drink driving laws, yet still many drink and drive. The alcohol clouds the mind into doing things it wouldnt do.
Drinking and Driving ruins lives (taken from UK government slogans). Whatever can be done, shoudl be done.
> Does DVB go past 480p? PAL is already above 480p (576):) rememebr us "backwards" European already have a TV standard with more lines than NTSC.
Also nothign in the spec itself that prohibits higher than pal 576p. In fact my DVB Setup box had a recent firmware update send to it (automatically, and over the air) to allow it to handle larger streams. It wont display the higher resolutions (as the hardware itself doesnt support it) but iat least it will handle it gracefully.
Mozilla did NOT implement the non-standard Netscape Layers tag, nor did it implement IE's Document.all, and instead implemented the W3C standard. This was intresting because it broke EVERY page that relied on it. I know of many "netscape only" pages that totally broke under Mozilla.
They also implemented IE's Inner HTML idea, even though its is not yet a standard, as it was genuinely usefull.
Both are great software.. there are couple of things you need to think about if u are going to install both at the same time.. however, It is explained in the readme.
Consider contributing to SpyBot S&D (this software is by a enthusiast, not a company)
Or Paying for the professional version of Adaware (even though the Free version is good).
Software like this needs updating frequently as new Spybots come out. Giving financial reward to the makers of these two software will only encourage them to keep going.
Although both packages ARE clean (I use both) there is a potential problem using both at the same time.
Adaware by default "quarantines" any dodgy stuff it finds, rather than immeadiately deleting them. These are stored away so that they dont cause harm. you can delete the quarantined items, or restore them. This just gives a usefull way to undo changes, incase something stops working.
Spybot S&D may find these quarantined objects and flag them as spybots, when in fact they are safely "immobilised" by Adaware.
SO make it a point of deleting the quarantined objects.
Otherwise both programmes are very good.. and i woudl consider donating to the Maker of SpybotS&D, or purchasing the pro version of adaware, just to support them. Unlike creating normal software, the authors ARE playing a race with the creaters of spyware, and the cash would do a lot of good.
I have provided this comment to them in the feedback form they have provided. The BBC are good at listening to comments by the viewers/readers.

This particular story is factually incorrect, and details contained within could be used inappropriatly.
As it stands there is no evidence to prove that Linux users created this virus. Thats just consequential speculation.
FACT 1: In fact all the major developers of the Linux Kernal and the wider Opensource/Free Software movement have been very quick to condemn the actions of the Virus writer and have gone on record to disassociate themselves from the actions of the writer. This invalidates the implication in the report saying that Linux Developer
FACT 2: The major antivirus vendors and security have formed the conclusion the attack on SCO and Microsoft were most likely a "smokescreen". The main purpose of the virus is that of a Trojan for stealing credit card, and other security info. The attacks on SCO appears to be a topical divertion.
FACT 3: Open Source advocates to not believe all software should be "free" as in free in price. It advocates freedom in development, and access to code. It works on the belief that software will be of higher quality if the development is open allowing anyone access to the code in the help for fixing bugs and adding features. The software itself can be "charged for". It is the difference between free in price, and free in freedom.
FACT 4: Open source advocates are NOT activists on a par with terrorists, etc as your report suggests. Open source advocates act on their principles by creating software that follows their ideals, such as the Linux Kernel, the GNU system, the Apache webserver (used by the BBC), Mozilla Web Browser (used by AOL and Netscape), Sendmail (used to deliver the majority of internet email), the BIND server (used to resolve DNS names, vital for operation of the Internet).
FACT 5: the implication that Linux developers are teenage geeks working in garages is also incorrect. Sure it started as a enthusiasts Operating System, however currently developers and contributers to Linux now include major firms such as, IBM, HP, Silicon Graphics, NASA, Oracle, Samsung, and even SCO.
Please read the GrokLaw website at http://www.groklaw.net/ which assists in making clear the legal and historical contexts of Linux, as well as the hidden danger of publishing misguided articles like this.
We have taken over a software project for the UK gov from another company.
The previous company appeared to be lost in touch with the requirements of the client. Althoguh they had a lot of good coders, things were not implemented to the clients liking. The greatest problem was that only the project managers maintained contact with the client.
Our policy on the other hand has greater client interaction at all levels. And despite the development team being a tenth of the size of the previous company, everyone gets involved, are creative in their solutions, and less time is wasted coding and then correcting irrelevent features.
If there is any greater case for NOT outsourcing software projects to offshore, our case is a good example.
Hey.. i used to have a Ford Escort (I am British BTW, which MAY be a different kettle of fish to the American version)
Mine was a J-Reg (1992) Encore model with beautiful mettallic Blue finish, spoiler, sunroof, and was quite fun to drive. It was made in Germany and was VERY well made, didnt rust at all, and was damn strong.
The engien was an "old fashioned" HSC PushRod type engine, with non hydrolic tappets, and chain timing, and MANUAL choke (remember those?)..
However, it NEVER failed to start, always ran well. and very reliable.
Now I drive a Mercedes Benz.. which is a nice car, but doesnt have the charactor of the lil Ford Escort Encore....
What evidence do you have that AVG will spam you? This is simply your own OPINION, and unless you back it up with fact.
Grisoft, makers of AVG do NOT spam you. I have "registered" my copy of AVG using an email address that is free from spam. One year later, it it STILL free from spam.
The reason for them asking for your email to provide a serial number is because the free AVG is only free for NON-COMMERCIAL, PERSONAL use.
By using individual serial numbers, AVG can tell (during Virus definition updates) if a free copy is installed on many machines with the same serial key.
This setup simply makes it impossible for companies to use the free version which they are not entitled to.
I dunno... I for one love Linux for servers and desktops.. but for cellphones, i think we already have a decent solution.... Symbian.
Yes I know its closed source, Microsoft, etc... However, it is created by a consortium of companies who are the experts in the industry (Nokia, Psion, Ericsson, SonyEricsson, Samsung). As such no one company can have total control of it.
Also remember here in Europe (and largely the rest of the world, except north america) things are vastly different to the USA way of doing things. There is a culture of Text Messages (SMS). Having MSN Messenger on the phone is not as widely looked for, as opposed ot the best MMS/SMS features.
Already Symbain has fostered a coorperative nature. My SOny Ericsson p800 can communicate well with a Nokia 3650, transfering ringtones, and pictures with ease. The bluetooth stack on Symbian is impressive. MS was known for appalling/non existant Bluetooth stacks. Its Text message/E-Mail/Organiser facilities are standardised, as with its SyncML capabilities. Its installation system is also streamlines (SIS files)
Had we not had a acceptable solution, then surely Linux woudl have been a perfect answer, However, we already haev a standard battle hardened solution.
Havign linux on the smartphone arena, implemented by different companies, in different ways will probably only lead to different standards. Imagine it, software for Linux smartphones in rpm, deb, tar.gz, jar, xpi.. just because each company wishes to be different. And before you start comparing with the desktop.. remember its not so easy to change your operative system on a cellphone, and with limited memory u cannot support everything under the sun (battery life/size factors)
The only way i can see that Linux will succeed in the SmartPhone arena is if the industry teams together to form a consortium and develop standards. However, i see very little incentive for them to do that, since there is already Symbian
There is a software called Appforge (i think) that allows you to create Applications for the Symbian/EPOC OS (running on RISC ARM) hardware using Visual Basic.
Ok applications developed using this was a DOG, and installing the runtime (Appforge Booster) gave no end to stability issues, which may be "ok" for a computer.. but having my Sony Ericsson P800 crash often thanks to that has effectively banned Appforge from my phone. Phones are NOT supposed to crash.. grrrrrrr
Fr your friends, aMSN runs under Linux very well, and has SOME advantages over the Windows version (log in to more than one account at the same time, know who is blocking you, check to see who has you on their buddy lists, etc)
It has some disadvatages too (lack of uPNP support - makes it difficult to do file transfer/etc via NAT, no picture or custon emoticon support, no shared games)
But had Spirit failed, and if anything goes wrong with Opportunity, that would be three landing probe failures in less than a month. that could end up preventing future probes by ANY country, as the risk of failure would scare funders.
I, even as a british, am proud of the efforts by NASA, as not only is some great science coming in, it gives hope for the future...

Mozilla DOES implement a few IE specific features, such as Inner HTML (its not just ALL standards, and ONLY standards).
However they will NOT break an exisiting standard to be compatible (for example, it will not emulate IE's broken Box model).
67 new windows??????? woah! I can live with that, i max out at 10!
have a look at the Firefox wallpaper then! its STUNNING looks damn hot on Windows and Linux!

.... just like its namesake film.
The parent post may have tried to be funny, but he/she has come up with a VERY good point.
MS woudl "sell" the stripped down version at a higher price, as it is a smaller market version. It is NOT the first time they have done this.
You didnt understand the point of my post.

hehe! I just noticed that this is the first virus that uses both Windows and Linux to DDOS scox!!
Windows users get infected in the usual way and DDOS's sco.
Linux users, like true "DIY" kings, read about it in SLashdot then DDOS sco servers using a good ol slashdotting!
