If you have little or no experienace in Windows 7/Linux, how can you compare and comment the way you have?
Windows 7, has UAC, which although the user MAY be admin, they are logged on with a standard user token. If an app requires Admin rights, it is elevated via UAC box, and a secure screen (preventing rogue software form auto clicking the UAC box)
MacOSX does the same, except it doesnt use a "secure screen" as such, but asks for the password instead.
Linux, ditto, though users are non admin by default. Uses Sudo rights, and a password screen in most GUI distros.
Although I do build computers myself, i do not agree that its always cheaper. I find in the "low end" market, Dell has got it (because of their bulk manufacture, etc)
I agree with what you said about Windows 7 (caveat, i have Ultimate in 64bit guise). I like the way I can use win XP mode for 32bit/16bit compatibility, even to the point of loading some older 32bit drivers for USB devices no longer supported in 7/64bit such as my scanner.
I woudl also arguably say that Vista also came of age recently, and although not quite as sharp as 7, its still a lot better than it was. I LIKE the UAC in concept. I liek that IE7 and 8 on those platforms starts in a low privelledge mode (severely restricitng the damage that can be done via bugs/dodgyness).Therefore I personally do NOT find XP great any more, with the way it handles security.
I LOVE ubuntu too. I like its all-in-one way of doing things.
Personally I am not too worried about Firefox. It has a certain set of features that some would want. Its like cars, you use a slow, but high capacity van for lugging things around, or a nimble roadster for nimble driving with your significant other (or alone if you wish!), but no matter what vehicle you use, you can generally drive on all roads. This is what the web should be, you choose your client, but that should not prevent you from browsing virtually all sites.
I am not too bothered about everyone looking more like chrome, because try using firefox3.6/IE on a netbook, and see how much space is "lost" thanks to the app frame.
Its a pity I do not have mod points, but if I did, I would mod you as "+5 spot on".
I was once a volunteer in Mozilla, and I joined because I didnt want ONE company to be the overwheming majority as was at the time (with IE in the 90%). Before IE it was Netscape, and before Netscape it was Mosiac. Even the view at Mozilla was that they wanted to "make a difference", but were not aiming to be the "browser that rules the roost".
The people at Mozilla are actually quite pleased that we have a better "spread" among these days, where we are approaching a state where people choose the browser based on its own "value added features" rather than due to rendering features.
IE has benifitted from Mozilla, and certainly for the developers developing IE, Mozilla has injected life to their project. IE has come from being an awefull browser in IE6 to a fairly respectible Broswer in IE8. The IE team are known for sending a cake to the Mozilla team everytime Mozilla makes a major release. MS Developers HAVE been very friendly and assistive to the Moz devs. In turn, MS views Mozilla Firefox as a "tier 1" application, and work together with Moz to ensure compatibility.
Peopel choose IE/Chrome/Firefox/Safari/Opera based on their own preferences these days.
I still prefer Firefox for my main browsing, but there are times I kick up IE/chrome, etc.
I am similarly agnostic on my choice of OS, using Ubuntu for work, and development oriented stuff, and Windows 7 Ultimate for home/personal/media/gaming.
I dissagree with you with regards to SMS vs Email. They are both very different with different use cases. SMS: - Fast (delivery time can be less than 2 seconds worldwide) - can be free if you have a good bundle - short (sometimes its good to be short and to the point) - deliverable to ANYONE with a GSM or compatible phone (including people in 3rd world countries, gran, etc) - easy (no setup nessesary, just start sending to a phone number, including to landlines here in the UK) - limited protection against spam (all messages are tracable, and here in the UK rogue senders can be taken offline, unlike mail) - whitelist filtering for business/kids (not really possible with mail as senders can be faked)
EMAIL: - Attachments, great for sending pics - easy to send to multiple people - free (if dataplan included) - Sendable to anything that can recieve an email.
Now, if you were comparing MMS to email, you may have a point.
Your analogy is very good in fact due to "impressions" people have. For example, people assume most Japanese cars (eg Toyota) to be hyper reliable, easy to maintain, though a bit lacking in features/overall power. Peopel assume Ford/etc to be less reliable, though more powerfull, and better featured.
Even though the fact is, these days, the Ford Focus (for example) is considered uber reliable, whilst some Japanese cars are slightly slipping on that.
There are SOME married people who use facebook, as a simple social network. I can imagine some poor married soul, who happens to have a "facebook profile" then gets sudden unsolicitated profile matches from this dating site, then has to explain to his/her partner....
But If you buy the box version of Office Home and Student versions actually give three liscenses with the key (allowing it to be installed on 3 computers).
I dont think the OEM key includes the 3 installations thing.
I am no MS fanboy, but I agree with what you say. I liek that Live DOES remember you deselecting it last time, and doesnt nag you on further updates. Microsoft is obviously going to peddle Bing, but they do make it quite clear, and do it in "the right way".
On the other hand.... take recent versions of Java, and its Yahoo bar... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Yes they nixed the linux compatibility for OLDER PS3's if you update to a new firmware. the Slim never had it in the first place. it really is NO BIG LOSS, trust me on that. The lunix compatibility was always a kludge anyway.
Those who have an OLDER ps3 that had backwards compatibility.. STILL have backwards compatibility. Sony have not Nixed that for "bought and paid" owners of those systems. for user of the newer non BC systems without ps2 hardware (like myself).. well.. thats life, we never had it, we were never going to have it.
Hardware is the same on slim and fat in terms of PS3 compatibility (except smaller, and some HDMI DTS Master/DD/ Sync/1.4 additions)
If you look I did say Dharmic PHILOSOPHY, as opposed to RELIGION, again i did explicitly state all of that.
Now if you do read up and understand Dharmic Philosophy, it is knowledge and yes, they used mathematics and observations to work out a lot of things. They called it "philosophy" because at the TIME they didnt have LHCs and so on to OBSERVE directly, but wrote down findings for a "future" people like us to further find out. Note: the religion part of hinduism is seperate.
Remember, without sophisticated calculators, and such, the ancient scientists in that area had already worked out the distance between the earth and the moon, to a fairly decent accuracy, while most of the rest of the world (Eygyptians, Greek, etc) still thought the world was flat.
A better analogy is Ford saying you can "only" use fuel sold by ford on Ford Forcourts, and driven on Ford Roads, etc, and creating mechanisms to only allow Ford provided roads/fuel. You may be able "jail break" a Ford car to run on any fuel or roads, but your warenty will be void.
Of course car manufacturers such as ford do NOT have such rules. They build cars to run according to standards set by "independant bodies", and can run on fuals/roads made to those standards, even on fuel that may be sold by a company "owned" by a competitor, if such a situation exists.
I have to kind of agree with you. My wife DID desire the iPad, dont get me wrong. But when I offered to get it for her birthday, she had a long hard thing about the actual productivity. She said straight away, that she felt the iPad (and most other tablets) were consumption devices, and not production devices, and told me to get a netbook instead.
Dont get me wrong, she DESIRED the ipad, and she sat down and objectively tried to use it in a store to do the stuff she expected to do with it, but she put her logic hat on, and decided she didnt NEED it, due to the fact that she could not "create" in the same way as with a real computer.
Hindu Philosophy (Or More Specifically Dharmic Philosophy, which coveres a than just Hinduism/Religion) Has always seen the universe as a creation/destruction cycle, with multiple cycles of creation/destruction.
If some nation used the Christian cross as their symbol and committed a whole load of atrocities, do you think Christians would stop using the cross as a symbol? Somehow I doubt it.
If you look at Spain and the inquisition........ Yes the Cross was used by a country and a huge number of atrocities was committed, under that symbol AND belief (despite what Christianity really stands for). In the case of the Nazis, they used the symbol, but dissasociated themselves from the belief.
Search on youtube somewhere there is a video where the queen is talking from her heart, about her role and so on. Its a different take on things, where she is talking very personally. Its definately one to watch, and shows her dedication of her job as monarch.
Remember, unlike us, she was "born into the job". She cannot change her job, if she doesn't like it. She cannot retire to a cottage somewhere afterwards, she only retires when she dies.
She is highly insightful, yet can be extremely down to earth.
Personally I think she is a person who takes her role very seriously, and I would rather have her than a president B-liar, Camara-on (Cameron), who only have to work for "terms" then can "retire" to a lucrative lecture cuircuit.
I also think Charles woudl make a great king when he gets a chance, he is also very insightful, and can be far ahead of his time.
Unfortunately, people who want to protest, now vote the BNP....... who apart from their racist agendas, also have "insightful" policies like 50% VAT, Compulsory Military/Cadet Service(*) and tax hikes.
Wonder how many of those who vote BNP because of Johnny Foreigner, realise the other policies of the BNP which WOULD hurt them a lot more in real terms.
(*) I myself HAVE done Cadet training, and have done my bit for the country, despite being an ethnic minority, it REALLY annoys me when I see BNP supports talk about how minorities have done nothing for their country, yet, if asked to send THEIR children to cadets, they balk. I think I have done more for the country than some of these clowns.
However, Sky news and Fox news, are completely different. At least Sky News aims to be better than the BBC, and has good reporting, though they tend to focus on "Breaking News"
Hmm.. our local Tesco sells the PS3 cheaper than PCWorld/Currys (UK Equiv to Best Buy), and they sell HDMI cables for about £2-£3. And thats a Brick and mortar shop.
Well, Although I agree with most of what you say, I have used some really cheap ass HDMI cables, which are not that great (connection issues, out of spec, which damage the socket, etc).
However, you can get decent enough cables much cheaper.
Recently I bought a cheap ass Micro USB cable for my HTC Desire, and I can tell its plug is just slightly off (diificult to push in, etc). It also refused to charge my phone for some reason. This cost me £1 on Amazon.
I bought a £2 belkin MicroUSB cable also from Amazon, and it worked fine, and is better made.
Point being, ultra cheap ass dont always work. However, possible to still get a decent cable, cheap if you know where to look, and yes, they sell that same cable for at least £10 in the brick and mortar shops.
Although I do agree with most of what you have said, there is one thing.
A LOT of the CCTVs in councils in the UK, are currently being used by their operators to spot parking/bus lane offenses (which earn revenue in fines). Now, I dont mind this in essensce, but when ever I go to some council areas (Such as Harrow and Hounslow) all I see is the CCTV cameras pointing to the bus lanes trying to fine motorists, than actually trying to survey the whole area.
One day (if it hasnt happend already) a crime is going to be missed, because the operators where trying to capture fines.
and just because the person mentions "fiance", you assume its a female, and you wonder why some nerds are forever stuck int he basement

I never said, nor implied that Apple is unreliable.
DONT go talking to the support rep, they only have a script to run on, they cannot do ANYTHING.
Instead email sales for the airline, and say that they are about to loose a sale, and watch how someone will almost definately help.

You missed one statistic. In areas of CCTV, how many crimes has it PREVENTED by just the aspect of them being there.
Unfortunately this is a statistic that is not easy to calculate, unless we employ mind reading.
